November 10, 2008 - Cassatt Artist Study
We just completed our artist for this term -- Mary Cassatt. As we normally do, Sprite chose one of the paintings to make her own reproduction. This is hers.

I chose to try my hand at A Little Girl in a Blue Armchair.

And here is Sprite's notebooking page.

For a link to this printable notebooking page, details on the books we used, and more Cassatt resources, visit Mary Cassatt Artist Study. And there's a quiz there. See if you can find the Cassatt among the paintings.
It just so happened that all the artists we've studied in depth have been Impressionists (or Post Impressionists). So to make a very welcome shift, we're moving to Picasso!

I have visited your blog so many times. Thank you for the glimpse into your life. I have been inspired to keep my own blog (livingthedeliberatelife.blogspot.com), as a journal for both my homeschool and my life. I am especially thankful for the Artist Study info., as we are finished with our second term and need something fun to fill some time. Thanks again.

We studied Mary Cassatt last year and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was able to find a coffee table book of her paintings at a used book store for a decent price.
Our local art museum has a couple of her paintings and I keep meaning to take the kids, but haven't managed it yet. (I'm such a procrastinator!) I think we'll plan that for our Thanksgiving week off.

Great job on the reproductions! While I personally dislike Picasso, he would be a much easier artist to copy!

Sprite did a wonderful job on her copies. That girl in the blue chair has always just cracked me up, her expression and body language just look so "I don't care" 'ish. Mary Cassatt was the first artist we studied years when we first started using Charlotte Mason methods. She has a special place in my heart. Tell Sprite "Good Job".

Thanks for posting these pictures. I used them to give my children an idea of what I was looking for in their Picture Studies.

Great Job Sprite! (and Jimmie) I just LOVE the look on Sprite's baby's face! It's like, "whoa, back off, sister." It cracked me up!
Sprite, I hope that doesn't hurt your feelings. I really think you did an awesome job. Way better than this 40 yo mama could have.

I love it! My daughter did a study of Wassily Kazinski (did I spell that right?) for homechool art class and made a copy of Color Study. It turned out so good!
I have never been much of an artist, but my daughter loves it!
Great blog! http://www.deldobuss.wordpress.com
