May 18, 2009 - Hydrogen and the Hindenberg
In our Chemistry study, we were studying hydrogen and came across the story of the Hindenburg. So we did the Disaster Diorama of the Hindenberg! (Not an easy model, BTW.)

Then Sprite added hydrogen and all of the noble gases to a large periodic table that we're making. I'll blog more on that later.

Fantastic diorama!
We just finished that book last week. While we didn't do a diorama, we had all kinds of fun discussions about hydrogen and helium. Like what would it be like if we took a bunch of hydrogen balloons to a birthday party? LOL Lots of sound effects and drama ensued!

Hi Jimmie,
This was actually one of the last field trips I was trying to set up in NJ before we moved to WV. We lived very close to Lakehurst. We never made it. :( Anyway, I don't know if you found this or not, but it is the Navy Lakehurst Historical Society website. http://www.nlhs.com/ The man that I spoke with to set up the tour was very kind and I'm sure he wouldn't mind answering any questions about the disaster if they come up.
Take care,
Shannon

I love that series of element books! And, I can't wait to see more about what you all are doing for chemistry. :-)

Did you watch the hydrogen segment on the Periodic Table of Videos site? You probably don't want to try that one at home, LOL! Thanks again for another great Hands On Homeschool blog carnival submission.
