Saying bye-bye to the TV

I am so excited and I just know you'll all think I'm absolutely crazy!  All day yesterday Glenn and I washed the floors (on our hands and knees, using a scrubbie! as we're still getting plaster and paint off!).  Glenn sealed them too, so the slate is so shiny, dark and beautiful!  Well, we had moved the entertainment center out of the way so we could get at the floor, and when it was done, Glenn looked at the living room and said," I really wish we didn't have to put that entertainment center back there, I just want a clear entry into the house."  Well, I finally dared to say what I've only dared dream about for some time....I said, "We could always get rid of the TV." and after much discussion (and some tears by Daniel), WE ARE GETTING RID OF OUR TV!!  I'm not one that thinks everyone should do this, I just am seeing that the TV is really impinging on our family life.  Before cable (B.C.!) the kids LOVED PBS, but since cable, they now find PBS boring and want to watch the "exciting stuff" on Nick, Cartoon Network, and Disney.  They whine if they can't watch what they want.  Glenn spends every evening in front of the TV and if the show is inappropriate for the kids, he simply sends them to their rooms.  Now, don't get me wrong, I LOVE all those different makeover shows and such, but I can see that TV has become a needless priority in our house.  So, this week Glenn is taking the TV to work for the breakroom (he did say he didn't mind not having a TV as he could watch stuff at work....at least that's not impingeing on family time!), I'm giving away our beautiful entertainment center, and our livingroom is really going to look nice.  We had a big oriental looking carpet in there, but it's backing really messed with the floor (took the sealer off the tiles!) and Glenn didn't want to put it back, but we really need something to break up all the square tiles.  So I went out into storage and found a red, oriental looking runner (8 ft x 2.5 ft) that I put in front of the door.  Along the wall where the TV was, we are going to put the bookcase with the homeschool stuff and cookbooks (looking for another little bookshelf to put cookbooks in the kitchen), next to that I'm putting my snake plant on one side, and on the other side, a tall wicker basket that we keep shoes in.  It will look so good!! I can't wait.  I was ready to move the bookcase last night, but Glenn's decided he needs to put one more piece of molding down along the floor.  I can't wait!!!  Oh, and the other thing is that Glenn REALLY wants a coffee table and I absolutely did not as it would take up too much room; but now that the entertainment center is gone, I am looking forward to getting a nice storage type coffee table that we can play games on, store games in, etc.  Did I tell you, I'M SO EXCITED!?!?!!!!

I am so excited for you, truly!! I would love for our t.v. to be gone. I thought we had almost made it to that point earlier this year. We chose to eliminate cable and just use an antenna for local channels. Well the antenna didn't work and so for Father's day my dh says "Don't get me anything I am getting a dish" :( So now I have gone from almost no t.v to 300channels. So much of your post is what we are experiencing in our home now. So I am praying again about this. Enjoy and be sure to post about the changes you see.:)

We got rid of our big television several years ago and it was a real blessing! For three years, we had only a 13-inch and no cable. We are back to a 21-inch and cable (heavily-edited). The time without really helped us manage our television time and now it's not an issue. I used TV tickets with my girls for about a year. They each received 5 tickets (1/2 hour per ticket) They turned in tickets to watch tv or a video. I always had final approval, and denial privileges. At times we took TV tickets away as a consequence to disobedience. My children rarely ask to watch TV now; if they do, it's because they want some family time to watch together.

The rewards your family will reap in this endeavor are enormous! Congratulations!
