Cadet Camp 19-21 October
Posted in Homeschool life
Cadets is the Reformed Church's version of Scouts or Boys Brigade. Boys between the ages of 9 and 14 meet together on a regular basis, do some Bible Study and work on projects, which are then awarded with badges. The badges usually involve a certain skill level being attained.
Andrew used to be a leader in our church many years ago. He did things like making leather lanyards, making a small boat from thin sheet metal, learning how to tie certain knots and taking the boys camping. The camping would then involve outdoor pursuits.
The NSW State camp was on over this past weekend and even though Andrew is no longer a leader, it was a great opportunity to take the older boys along to a camp. I appreciated the fact that Andrew was going with them as well.
Here's a photo of the main marquee:

They drove up to Sydney on Friday night and had to pitch their tent in the dark. Saturday had a full program of rock climbing, BMX trail bike riding, archery and swimming. As Andrew had to actively supervise a group, he didn't think to take any photos of all of that!!
They had a bush service together on Sunday morning and Stevie got to do a Bible reading.

After that, it was lunch, pack up and come home. We saw some tired and yet excited boys later that day.
"We got to do 'real' archery, Mum!"
"The rock climbing wall was so good!"
and many other stories were related when they came back.
I had a lovely, quiet weekend with the younger two. I'll write about part of it another time.

Oct. 22, 2007 - BMX Track

Did Skip Andrew happen to mention how he lost the skin from his knee on the BMX track?? Didn't think so! Well Skip Andrew thought he was a cadet again and decided to attempt to set the fastest time on the BMX track. I think his comment was "Ï didn't expect to go so high in the air over that jump and from there it was all over" The cloud of dust wasn't small and Skip Andrew was congradulated at the end of the day for being the only kid all day that we needed to get the 1st aid kit out for! from the BMX leader Skip Darren

Hi Jocelyn, Darren posted a comment the other day but forgot to put his name on. I wanted to explain how he came about putting a coment on your blog. Darren arrived home from camp and along with the stories he mentioned a leader named Andrew from Canberra. I straight away thought of a couple we had met during a time of living in Canberra so I did a search on your names and your Blog page came up. I don't know if you remember us but we lived in Canberra during 96/97, I used to come to craft with you which was held on an evening. We moved back to sydney just after your frist child was born and have been here ever since. We now have 3 boys who are growing up so quickly. Anyway I just thought I would send you an email and say Hi. Kerri Kuitert Ps. hope this is ok. Didn't know how to get your email address.

Of course I remember you! When I saw your full name, I knew who you were right away. I don't give access to my email here as I have had a lot of problems with spam.
Thanks for explaining. If Darren took some piccies, I'd love to get some of them. If he has the email addresses of some of the other Cadet leaders, I'm sure they can pass on Andrew's to you.

Also, by the sounds of it boys will continue to be boys even when they have grown up tehehe. Our kidos will have to wait till summer before they go on their first camp ...... patience is a virtue!
