St Augustine
Posted in USA Trip

On Friday, 11 April, we drove 45 min south of Jacksonville to the oldest city in the USA. St Augustine was founded in 1565 by the Spanish and they held dominion down there until the 1820s. We had hot and slightly humid day to walk around in but it was still a good day. Walking down the main street and looking at the historical buildings was interesting but didn't capture the boys' attention. At the lunch break, we sat on park benches at the Catholic Cathedral and were given entertainment by the bells ringing from the Episcopal church across the way. They were playing well known hymns so we just hummed right along to the music. After a couple more photos (with Ponce de Leon's statue, cannons and the like), we went to explore the fort - Castillo San Marcos. Yes, here the boys were fully occupied and just loved seeing the rooms, old weapons, fortifications, reading of raids, battles, strategies for defence and so on. There were even some men who let off a gun powder charge from a cannon - all decked out in the traditional (woolen) uniform! After a few hours, it was off to the wooden playground, with some nice ice creams to cool off and then back to the house in Jacksonville. On the Facebook account, you can see some photos of the day. I'll have to blog about Stevie's birthday later as it is getting late and we are leaving Jacksonville tomorrow to head north to North Carolina. |
