A Pondering Heart

Oct. 19, 2006 - Satan’s Holiday - or as we call it in America… Halloween

Well, I had a suggestion from a reader to post about Frodo and so I have… Here is the link: Frodo of the Shire, the Ringbearer.  Over at the OneBlog, I have a new writer… Aldawen (Tree-Maiden) Please stop by her blog or the OneBlog and welcome her.  ~ Alatariel (Garland-Maiden)

As for my last post: Fannee Doollee… I had some people who didn’t have a clue what or how to do it… well, I will give you a hint… See how Fannee spells her name? What is the common denominator between her name and the things she likes? If you figure it out post a Fannee Doollee! I had fun seeing what others thought of!

wants a horse, if you haven’t heard, and we would LOVE to get her one for 17th birthday on the 26th. So, I was thinking if we had 800 people give just $2… that would be enough to pay for a horse… I think that would be an awesome gift for since she has wanted a horse since she was little. (Sigh) ok, back to reality. Anyway, I think we are going out for her B-day (the first time in a couple months) and I got her a gift that she will love!

Mom and I went into town yesterday (3miles away) and we saw all the lovely decorations for Satan’s Holiday - or as we call it in America… Halloween. We saw the lovely skulls up and down the walkways (lamps) and all the jack-o-lanterns.
I knew a family that instead of joining the trick-or-treaters, they turned all their lights off and went to the back of their house and prayed for everyone who was out that night, all the people who don’t understand that just as Christmas and Easter is Christ’s holiday Halloween is Satan’s. We have never done Halloween for this exact reason; there is no point as a Christian to participate. I am thankful that I’m not one of the blind sheep that has been led astray by our “American Culture”.
A Christian friend once said she wouldn’t stop her children from doing Halloween because it was a part of their traditions and she agreed with what I am saying above. If someone knows what they are doing is wrong and they still do it, then they are bigger sinners than the people who don’t know it’s wrong and do it. I can tell you what I will be doing on Satan’s Holiday, I will be praying for the trick-or-treaters.

Here is the true meaning of Halloween and no, it's not about candy... "What about those ghosts, black cats, and Witches? Well, the ghosts are our loved ones who have died. The kitties can see in the dark and so can see what we humans can not. Our beloved kitties are a symbol of seeing what we can not see with our eyes but can with our hearts—the divine. The Witches are people with a deep belief in the divine, a religious people who have reclaimed the divine in the ancient folk customs. Witch is a word that many wish to reclaim in its dignity of meaning a spiritual person who practices a religion with beliefs and practices that gives joy of worship and communion with divinity. Communion with the beloved dead and with divinity, this is Samhain." Taken from:  The Message of Halloween; The Message of Samhain

I had permission to go to the witchvox.com, and with my Mom, so don't go to any of the links without a parent...
and another...Should Christians Celebrate Halloween?

EDITED: I got some comments that I needed to reply back to so here they are:
LOTR - Witchy? - My Reply: LOTR Witchy PART II

and another pleasant comment I had to reply to: That70'sblog: Hello..... and My reply: Donna   Oh, yes and another: Danvelover  my reply: Ahem

I agree. We've never celebrated Halloween, and we don't ever intend to start. If Halloween was just about dressing up and getting candy, then it would be no problem. But the true meaning of Halloween isn't innocent and sweet at all.

Witchcraft just freaks me out. I'm not paranoid about it or anything, I just stay away from it, unless it's being presented from a Christian view. Meaning that they're telling you what Halloween and witchcraft really are.

And I don't see how people can think witchcraft is "good". It just has a sinful, evil feeling to it; at least it does for me. You know how you can just walk past a Halloween decoration, or read something about it, and just get this sick, uneasy feeling? But then, I know the Truth, so I guess it's different for people who don't know Jesus.

This is such a controversial issue.....and to anyone who reads this and disagrees with me: I'm not trying to start a fight. This is just my opinion, and I'm sticking with it!!

Oct. 19, 2006 - I just want to say...

Posted by ThreeLittleLadies

that Halloween is just yucky. We haven't done it since the girls were little. At our last church we had a different holiday altogether, so it wasn't a problem. Now the girls know that they can't expect to do it, and don't seem to mind. I am always glad for other people who think like we do.

My sister is a kindergarten teacher. One of her colleagues told her that she had a child who brought a story about a witch to show and tell. She politely told the child to bring a different kind of book to read - not one about witches. As it ends up, the child's parents were wicca ("white-witches"), and made a big scene with the director of the school about persecution, etc! The director then offered to let them come and talk to the kids about wicca, which fortunately the parents turned down - they didn't want that kind of "light" on their "darkness", I would imagine.

I hope you don't get any ugly comments, we are all entitled to our opinions.

I totally agree with you! I don't think that dressing up in costumes and asking for candy is necessarily a bad thing in itself, but Halloween has alot more to it than the innocent face that people put on it. It's a day that we definately need to PRAY, and PRAY HARD. I just can't imagine the spiritual warfare that must go on between the demons and angels every year on Halloween!

I completely agree with the halloween thing....I'm not doing it this year. Instead I will do as that family did and pray for the people doing it. Or another idea that just popped into my head...instead of giving the kids candy...give them verses on fridge magnets or something like that. I $2 thing is a really good idea...how do I get it to her?????

Oct. 19, 2006 - Oct 31 was the date Luther posted his 95 theses--so some people have a Reformation Day party

Posted by Stephanie10

Growing up, I loved October 31 because it meant I could knock on people's doors and get candy. How many other people get to do that on their birthday? The last time I celebrated was on my 18th birthday. I was dressed as Toto (the dog in WIzard of Oz) and went around with a group of college kids dressed as Dorothy, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, and Scarecrow. (I hadn't been in years, but they invited me to go with them, so I did.)
The negative about most of my birthdays? Because of the date it fell on, activities were already planned, so I was usually just included as an afterthought--in with all the scary movies, haunted houses, etc. And as an adult? Do you know what a bummer it is to spend your entire birthday evening listening to the ringing doorbell and being flooded with demands for candy? For 11 years we lived in a child rich neighborhood and no amount of darkness would deter them from persisting at the door until we brought candy. The few times we left for the evening, we'd come home to evidence of neighborhood unhappiness with our abdication (i.e., vandalism). Once I recall getting home between 9:30 and 10 pm--and some teens came to our door begging sweets! I'm so thankful we were able to move away from that area seven years ago.
Anyway, all this to say that now we celebrate my birthday on that date. Flowers, pastel colors (*not* orange and black!), cake and ice cream...just a normal birthday party with family. (And sometimes we snag candy when it goes on sale in early November--especially chocolate!)

Oct. 20, 2006 - Hello.......................

Posted by that70sblog

I was just going on random blog to find friends and your blog came up. Well, I have a slightly different comment to post that others have. I don't think this is a mean nasty comment either, so, please take no offence on what I am about to say. We are all entitled to our own opinion. Please don't take me wrong on this comment, I'm not judging you, so I'd appreciate it if you did not judge me.
I celebrate Halloween with my 10 *now 11* siblings and we have loads of fun trick-or-treating on Halloween night. I don't believe it's a Evil Holiday. It's just another fun Holiday. And perhaps you think I'm blind, but, that's okay, because that is your own opinion. Please do not tell me I am a sinner. Because everyone is in their own way, even a pastor is a sinner, because he is not perfect. And, if you pray for me, just know as you pray that I am not feeling bad as I go around and ask for candy, because I'm not gonna ruin someone's home if they don't have any candy. And, I don't believe that I am doing something Evil or wrong.
I don't believe in Jesus being God anyways. My parents never taught me that. They told me yes, there's God. *A higher power* So, please don't think I'm doomed to Hell or anything, because frankly, I don't believe in Hell.
My family doesn't think of Christmas as Jesus' b-day either. My little brothers and sisters believe that there is Santa and stuff, and that's what Christmas is to me and my family. A time for joy and celebration, but not celelbration of Jesus' b-day, but a time to give and recieve.
Easter is also like the same thing, I don't believe that's the time Jesus was ressurected *don't know how to spell that* but my bro's and sisters *smaller one's* believe in the Easter Bunny. We dye eggs and things, and search for them for fun, but, nothing like religion.
Please don't take this as a nasty or rude comment even though it contradicts what you believe. Because I am not saying your wrong for what you believe, so please don't tell me I'm wrong for what you believe. I hope you don't take me as some super Evil Person and I am going to Hell or anything. *I truly hope you don't.* But, I'm not going to hide what I believe because some people might hate me for it, because that's not my problem if that is how they feel. I don't believe that you sould be at all offended. And I'm terribly sorry if you are. *That was certainly NOT my intention* Well, I suppose that's all.

I agree that we shouldn't celebrate halloween. Our church has a really cool alternitave. On night near that time of the month the church has what they call a harvest fun party where the kids can dress up (Nothing scary like witches, ghosts, goblins that sort of thing) and play games to earn their candy. There's cider and doughnuts. It's really fun. My heart does go out to the poor little children who believe in Halloween. Mom and I have this thing where we tape tracks for children to the candy so that when they get the candy they have the chance to recieve something even better. It's a really cool idea and kids love comics.

Blessings!

Oct. 20, 2006 - Just some information

Posted by dancelover

Hello Again. I just would like to give you some information on the backgrounds of Christmas and Easter as you seem so intent on how they are Christ's Holidays and Halloween is not. If you are so confident that the backgrounds of Halloween are so Evil and Wicked I just wanted to give you some sites you could go on to discover the background and origins of Christmas and Easter.

Here's the one for Christmas: http://de.essortment.com/christmaspagan_rece.htm
(On this one you have to scroll down to see what is written.)

Here's the one for Easter: http://www.northdenmarkonline.dk/culteral/april03/easter.htm
(Go to The History of Easter)

If you don't go, I understand. After all, I'm sure you wouldn't want to discover the paganess of your beloved Holidays that are so holy to you.

If what you read on here offends you so much that you hate me, that's fine. I hope you decide to go to these sites and discover the backgrounds and origins of Christmas and Easter.

What facinates me still is how churches and things will give an alternative celebration instead of Halloween, around the same time. If you go to these sites above you will understand how Christianity usually copes with these things by giving an alternate holiday, though it's quite similar to Halloween. Maybe it's not on October 31st but it's in late October, you dress up, and get to eat candy. What is the big difference except that your pastors and leaders tell you it's bad. Why don't you investigate it for yourself, instead of just believing everything people tell you? God gave you a mind to use it, not to let it go to waste. To think about why these things are, not just because pastor so-and-so told me that's how it is. If you think about it, there's really no difference, the church just wants you to feel involved, without being bad. Hmmm, sounds kinda like Christmas and Easter to me!

I hope you will take the time to look around these sites and research all of the holidays not just the one's you have already judged as being devilry. Because that's what I like to call a Pick-and-choose Religion.

Oct. 20, 2006 - To answer Macaroni,

Posted by Jocelyndixon

Well, thank you for commenting and for giving your opinion. As for LOTR…well, I have had a couple bloggers and one anonymous ask about LOTR vs. Harry Potter and are they the same? Well, I answered them here: Harry Potter vs. LOTR & Part II This is just a few entries about LOTR vs. HP. They may give you a better understanding. ;-)

But to answer your question: “Isn’t LOTR witchy too?”
Yes, LOTR has witchcraft in it, just as we do in our real world… The difference between HP and LOTR is this: LOTR uses witchcraft to better MiddleEarth (Except for the bad guys and they are clearly seen has bad guys) In HP that is not the case. HP uses his witchcraft to better himself and in way it is “good”. JKRowling is using HP to get kids used to witchcraft and make it look appealing and good.

If you look at life and the spiritual realm, there is good and evil. In the LOTR Gandalf is suppose to be like an archangel… and he has powers/wizardy from the highest beings and is only allowed to use it for good. Do you think that if a real archangel was using his powers from God for evil, do you think God would let him continue? No. Like Saruman, once he turned evil he was cast out f the order of Wizards.

Did you know that the Rabbis and Priests in Israel thought Jesus was using evil spirits to do his miracles? Yes, it’s true, so you can’t just say because there is some kind of higher power, it is evil. Believe me, if LOTR were evil I would not be allowed to have anything to for with it. Have you ever watched Disney’s the Little Mermaid or Pocahontas? Well, if you have then you know the evil and witchcraft that are in those movies! I, as a 15 yr old, am not allowed to watch Disney movies and I am not allowed to watch any movie without my parents watching it first.

There is witchcraft in the real world and the author of LOTR, JJR Tolkien, was a devote Catholic as was pretty darn close to Christianity. When asked what the purpose of life was, J.R.R. Tolkien responded in this way:
"…So it may be said that the chief purpose of life, for any one of us, is to increase according to our capacity our knowledge of God by all the means we have, and to be moved by it to praise and thanks. To do as we say in the Gloria in Excelsis: ‘. . . We praise you, we call you holy, we worship you, we proclaim your glory, and we thank you for the greatness of your splendor…’ in Daniel II. ‘PRAISE THE LORD . . . all mountains and hills, all orchards and forests, all things that creep and birds on the wing.'..and in moments of exaltation we may call on all created things to join in our chorus, speaking on their behalf, as is done in Psalm 148, and in The Song of the Three Children."
He says he didn’t like allegories, but you can’t write a book and not have it be affected by your real life. Tolkien had to include witchcraft because if he didn’t it would not have been realistic.
There is evil and witches in the world and be sure you can discern which is which. No witchcraft is good and in the LOTR Gandalf uses his powers like Jesus did in the Bible…. From God or in LOTR the Iluvatar (God) and for only the mission he was sent to MiddleEarth for.
The same thing goes for Chronicles of Narnia. The White Witch (Bad Guy) uses the only witchcraft that is used in that book. Yes, Aslan has a higher power but Lewis wrote him to be like Jesus and therefore he HAD to have a higher power, but it’s not witchcraft. Make sense?

The only thing you really have to consider is this: What is the source of the power? Is it from Evil Spirits or is it from God? Many of the Disciples were accused of being demon-possessed because they had powers, but theirs were from God. Elijah was also accused of possessing demons and was acussed of using wichcraft, but did he? No. It doesn't mantter the ends, it's the means that matter. If you are using witchcraft to do good, it's not justified in any way! Gandalf was using his powers (from God) for good as he was supposed to and that's what matters.

I hope I haven’t offended you and I hope I answered your questions. Thanks for adding me to your friends. I will ask mom if it’s ok if I add you… ;-)

Sincerely,

Jocelyn

Oct. 20, 2006 - Dear Donna-

Posted by Jocelyndixon

No offence taken. In fact I am not even mad you don’t believe in Jesus as God, but I hope one day you will so you may enter into Heaven and live forever (and your 10-11 siblings).

As for my post – I was talking about/to Christians who do Halloween, so it doesn’t apply to you. I am bound to Jesus Christ and I am under His Grace that He gave to me, since you do not believe in Him you are not under Grace, you are under the Law and may abide by it as you wish. I am supposed to shield myself from any evil or relation with Satan and Halloween (if you read the article I linked to) clearly stated that Halloween was invented to communicate with the dead and Satan (by spirits/demons). It talks about doing so in the Bible (in the Old Testament). Saul was punished because he conversed with a witch or a medium.

As for Halloween… God gave his Son to die on the Cross so that I may take authority over the Devil and call his holiday evil. When Jesus/God gave me His Grace my slate was swept clean - I am no longer a sinner, through the blood of Jesus. Yes, I will sin for the rest of my life, but I have a the Cross, and I can be forgiven (that doesn’t mean I get to do things that aren’t right and then ask for forgiveness again and again) I know this to be true.

As for Halloween not being evil and just a night for getting candy… I have nothing against people going to houses to get candy. That is fine; in fact it’s probably really fun!
No, I have a something against all the Satanists and witches that celebrate the dead and Satan on that day. The world makes it all right by advertising it under the guise of innocent children dressing up and trick-or-treating, but, as you have shown, most people don’t really see what it’s about. It’s not about candy at all and it’s not innocent either.

The article I linked on that post was written by witches, and they stated the true purpose of Halloween. If you read it, then you know deep down (whether you want to admit it or not) halloween is evil. Why, if something is not evil, do they have *dead skulls, spiders (most people are afraid of), witches, dead things, monsters, black cats, and Jack-o’-lanterns (which were used to light the way to the dead) - just to add fun to the eventful evening? I don’t think so.

I knew when I wrote this post I would have some people who disagreed (no matter what I said), and I’m not trying to change your mind. I am merely answering your comment. ;-)

I hope I haven’t offended you. I was put on this earth to bring glory and honour to God and nothing about Halloween has anything to with Him, so I will steer clear.

Sincerely,

Jocelyn

I DO NOT agree with having "church parties" on Halloween instead of Halloween. It is still wrong. I DO NOT agree with the way people have made My Savor's birth to be a spectacle or Easter for that matter. I have done TONS of research about the origins of Easter and Christmas and sometimes it make me sick! We don’t even go to church anymore because, you are right, they do cope with the world and it’s a sad sight!

You sarcasm wasn’t really necessary. The Holidays are not what “are so holy to me”. The reason we have the holidays - like Halloween. We don’t have Halloween for the purpose of getting candy. We have it so that the witches can “communicate with the dead”.

I checked out the links you gave me (one didn’t work) and have read it before. I knew exactly what they were talking about and to tell you the truth we don’t put up a Christmas tree for Christmas... Why? Because it has nothing to do with Jesus. We are very a Biblical family... We wear skirts, We believe that the woman's place is at home and the man is the head of the house, we don’t watch movies very often and never any TV, and if it‘s not in the Bible then we don‘t do it. If you are wondering about LOTR well, check out my blog and look in the comments.

I wrote this entire post up and only copied that one paragraph so I could link it. These are MY words, not something someone told me, this is what I believe. The only people I listen to are the 2 people God put in my life (my parents) and Him. As for “pastor so-and-so” I think most Pastors today don’t have an Inkling of what the Bible really says. I think they are too conformed to the world to see.

My heart goes out to you and I’m sorry that you think the way you do. As you said, “God gave you a mind to use it, not to let it go to waste.” I agree! and as for you remark “Because that's what I like to call a Pick-and-choose Religion. “ You can apply that to my comment to Donna “The article I linked on that post was written by witches, and they stated the true purpose of Halloween. If you read it, then you know deep down (whether you want to admit it or not) Halloween is evil.” Use your mind and figure out what kind of Christian you are. Will you abide by the laws of this World and it's standards?

There is God's Perfect Will and then there is God's Will, which will you be in?

Romans 12:2
And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Sincerely,

Jocelyn

I'm sorry about my sarcasm, that was totally unnecacary, I apologize. As for my "You Go Girl!" it is because she has the guts to openly discuss what she believes in front of people without any form of regret because she isn't afraid of the outcome, that's all. I respect that. (personally) I think it takes a lot of guts. (That is just my opinion) I hope you don't take all this as a sign that we can't be friends anymore, because I would still like to be on your friends list. But, if you feel you must take me off, nothing I can do. Well, here's something:

Ah yes, the skulls are pretty, aren't they! And the giant inflatable glowing grim reapers, the skeletons and the ghosts. Ah, Halloween, how you make me barf!

My piano teacher was telling me that it had started out as a Catholic holiday, when they'd remember all their loved ones that had passed on. Then Satan got his way and twisted it into what it is now. Ah well.

The decorations are so sickening. I saw a mom pick up a plastic skeleton by a leg while her little son sat in the front of her shopping cart watching her. *bleck*
Needless to say, we don't acknowledge this holiday in anyway.
As for Christmas, we don't give put up a tree or lights. We have no intention of teaching our son about an omnipresent, omnipotent jolly fat red guy who lives in a fictional place with fictional elves and doesn't really know if he's bad or good..... we spend time with family and sometimes I give out homemade holiday candy.
And as for Easter, it has nothing to do with a rabbit, eggs, chocolate, or painted baby chickens, either . . . .
And Valentines, well, my husband and I celebrate our love many, many days each month and we don't need a commercialized, pagen-based holiday to remind us to appriciate each other.
Thanks for your posting. I really enjoyed it.

Good job. I sometimes wonder if there will be any other sutable Christians out there for my children to fellowship with and marry when they are older. Seeing bright young people out there with Biblical opinions is very encouraging! Keep up the good work!

Halloween is evil and people don't realize that there have even been human sacrifices for this holiday. How sad that we change the name to something else and then celebrate it with other Christians IN THE CHURCH!!! They won't think it isn't a big deal when they bow before God someday!!!!

Anyhow, Good Job!!

I agree with you. As long as I can remember, we have never celebrated Halloween, with the exception of going to a fall festival at our church. Even then there were no scary costumes allowed (though some people didn't follow the rule) Other years we just stay at home and don't answer the doorbell.

Yes, I just realized that recently, but I also recently found someone elses blog, and it was called Higher up and Further in, and I do not want to offend that person, so I am going to keep it the way it is for now.
Thanks for commenting!!!

Actually I have 3 blogs now! I have a xanga one for all my xanga friends!

I'm pretty much copy and pasteing everything from Hobbits From The Shire onto the xanga site though, so it's not much different.

while i agree with you about satan's holiday i am surprised that you think it's ok to use witchcraft to battle evil men. evil men and witches get their power from the same source- satan. the end doesn't justify the means! stealing something to make someone happy is a crazy idea even tho making someone happy is a good idea. end doesn't justify the means. same with witchcraft. why would you want to place yourself alongside the devil to do anything? don't bother reponding becuz i disliked all the satanic quizzes you had placed on your site and i won't be back. by the way- focus on the family told people not to see pirates of the carribbean becuz of the evil and yet you chose to see it apparently. strange to me.

Hello,
Well, you didn’t read my stand on witchcraft... because I do NOT in ANY WAY think it is GOOD or JUST no matter the ends. I stated in my reply that it doesn’t matter the ends, but it matters the means and in LOTR Gandalf uses power from the god of Middle (as our God gave Jesus and the Angels powers). I would not place myself in any way alongside Satan and I don’t see how I have. I encourage you to re-read my reply and then make your judgment.
As for the Satanic quizzes I have on my sidebar... if you would like to say that POTC is Satanic then yes, I have ONE quiz that is Satanic but that is all. As for Focus on the Family... we gave up stock in them all lllllooooonnnngggggg time ago because they do NOT always lead people in the right direction or Biblically for that matter. I would not put my spiritual-being in their hands for anything, thank you. Yes, POTC has skulls and curses... as does Treasure Island.
I think your comment would have been much better received if you had attempted to encourage me to stay away from those things (since I really hadn’t thought about POTC as Satanic, though it is) and give me words of wisdom, not shunned me because I was wrong. Thank you for stopping by.

Sincerely,

Jocelyn

Oct. 23, 2006 - What a great discussion!

How great that you pray for the trick-or-treaters! When I was in college I led a Halloween Prayer Vigil from 11pm-2am in our chapel. I hate Halloween and always pray. A couple of times in the past few years, we attended the "Hallelujah Festival" at our church as an "alternative." This October, I realized that compromise (on my part) was a bad idea when my kids started shouting jubilantly, "Halloween!" when we walked in the grocery stores. No more compromising here!!!! I have also in the past handed out tracks with candy, but I don't even think that's a good idea this year with all my kids running to the door, so I don't know what exactly to do. Pray we will!
I have the displeasure of knowing the true evils of the day second-hand from a friend of my mom who was abused by Satanists. It's very sad and horrific. Plus, my maternal grandmother is a New Age Witch. Scary stuff! So glad to be protected by the Lamb's blood.
Stay firm and be strong! God will bless your conviction! Don't compromise! Continue to respond to those who disagree with you with grace and gentleness and pray that God's truth would pierce their hearts!

Hello!
Thanks for participating! I enjoyed reading your answers. I've noticed that a lot of people have their blogs set up to receive comments to their email. I might have to do that!
Anyway, good luck!

it is realy, realy, realy, wonderful that you have an answer to each question (or accusation) the people are dirrecting towards you, AND that your answer is usualy biblicly backed up! How do you know all this? You also have a great talent of making your answers to not seem "hoiler then thou", instead they are spoken, (or typed :) in a friendly and encouraging way. I totaly love your blog, and I love LOTR ! Can I add you to my friends list?
Keep up the good work!
Kate
