I have read:
The Charlotte Mason Companion
To Train Up A Child
The Fallacy Detective (read this one WITH my children and will reread it to them again!)
The Excellent Wife
I would also like to add that another favorite of mine is Created To Be His HelpMeet, but I would save this for an engaged our married young woman!

Jocelyn,
I'm so glad that you're taking initiative to prepare for the future. That's a good list of books!! I enjoy reading parenting/marriage books and listening to talks, etc. Our teen years are like our training ground - not just time to waste.
BTW, the Fallacy Detective book is hilarious...I went through it in a homeschool co-op class!! Great book!!

I guess I didn't add the link to Amanda's blog because I have the banner on there that says, a blog for girls age 12 and up, on the top of the page. Probably too because it was 3:30am, the only time I have time alone and I didn't have a clear head. I haven't read your post yet but will later and comment then. Thanks for showing concern for your sister, I'll go add another link to the post.

I agree with you! Reading parenting books before being married will be excellent preparation for having children one day. I hear so many people say that it’s too bad children don’t come with an instruction manual. They’re wrong, because the Bible is the best instruction manual there is!
I’m glad you’re participating in the challenge! I will be praying that it will draw you (and everyone participating) closer to God.
Love,
Mandy

Hello Jocelyn,
Thank you for comments….It was fun to hear from you.
I love you blog too….it’s always fun to see what you post about...so yes, please add me to your e-mail list… Do you think I should do that when I post? Or do you just stop over on occasion to see if I have anything new?
I enjoyed reading your post…those are excellent books on your list… I agree that it’s never too early to read books such as those. Being a bookworm myself…I always enjoy looking at books on booklists and adding some to my own.
Thank you for saying you enjoy my blog….I needed that today...Do you think it needs anything? Like I don’t know…more costume research post…or something? I’m open to suggestions of things that you would like to see….
I hope you have a wonderful day!
Sincerely,
Brielle

Thank you for another great post! I really enjoyed reading this. I've thought so many times that I wish my parents had raised us (my sisters and I) with a better understanding of what we would encounter as adults. I can honestly say that I've done a much better job training Kelsey (my youngest) than I did my oldest daughter. I feel at times that I must hide my face in shame for not doing a better job with my oldest daughter, even though she is a young christian woman and lives a good life, she's a good mother and wife; however, I failed her and as a result she had to learn these things on her own, as I did also. I didn't do such a good job with her in her teenage years. I don't accept such comments as "teenage years" or "phases". I know what I did wrong now. What do the scriptures say about how to live without having regret? I have a hard time with forgiving myself.
I've read several of the books you've listed and visit the Heart of Wisdom site very often...I discovered it in January or February this year and practically lived on it for several weeks. I am an avid reader and also a bookworm; Kelsey is always pulling books out of my selective shelves and reading them. Thank you again! Nancy

I really recommend a book called, "Beautiful Girlhood" revised by Karen Andreola. My mom used to read it to me all of the time before I went to bed. That, and "Stepping Heavenward" by Elizabeth Prentiss. I read that book not to long ago and it was really inspiring. Not to mention the book, "Joni", by Joni Earokson Tada. (I got to meet her once!)

Thanks for giving me something to think about. My kiddos are younger, but this is good to think through the books that I would want them to read, books that I wish that I had read. Good for your mom and good for you having a great attitude in reading these wonderful treasures...

Hi Jocelyn!
That is a nice selection of books on your list! In fact, I think my family has most of them, which is good. Haha! For my birthday, I got some great books from Vision Forum, including "So Much More". The others were "Raising Maidens of Virtue" by Stacy McDonald, "How to be a Lady" Harvey Newcomb, and "Before You Meet Prince Charming" by Sarah Mally. They're all really well written, and I think they might be worth looking into for you as well. Oh yes, and then there is this book called "The Christian Charm Course" that was written by Emily Hunter, and "Beautiful Girlhood" revised by Karen Andreola. Whoa...That would be a lotta' books to read. They should have a "Young Ladies Bookclub" on here or something...LOL! |

Hey Jocelyn!
Yes, I totally agree with you! In our childhood, we should be preparing for our adulthood. It only makes sense that way! Oh, those are all good books! We have almost all of them and are reading through a few of them right now.
Hope you have a great week!

I believe that any Christian young adult who wants to grow and mature into a wonderful spouse and parent should read these books. Also, I have to read them before I go to. I am almost done with most them! Good Question though!

My Aunt will get here twoards the end of the week. She'll be here for 2 weeks. They're all here for the wedding on Saturday. We'll have a full house!

I totally agree with what you say in your post - we are trying to bring our DS (now age 12) up to be a responsible young man. Recently, the police were called to our street because of the antics of several unruly children/young people (aged between 10 and 15) who were creating havoc. The officers visited every house and talked to all the teens (including DS) - they were so impressed by his attitude! When asked if he had been taking part with the others, he said, "No way! I know how to behave - they don't! They're just idiotic fools who don't have any respect for anyone else. I wouldn't want to play with any of them, so I choose not to." I was so proud of him!

I have been wanting to read "So Much More", for a while now. I have been reading books like that for school for a while now. Some discuss more material things, such as sewing, cooking, and cleaning, and some are about things such as defending the faith.
I too am learning a lot by reading books like these, and sometimes try, that is the key word, try, to apply these things to my life now, even though I am still young.
Please let me know what you think about "So Much More". |

Dear Jocelyn,
First of all, please let me apologize for the delay in getting back to you - we have been pretty busy, as you may read in my latest entry:
Ooh, I do like your template idea! You are really good at thinking of things like that. That sounds very pretty and seems like it would fit me very well. There is one problem, though - I would have to find a picture. I may have one in mind...hmm. Maybe when I get a chance I can work on it on my test blog. I might ask for some help on it - if I decide to change my template, that is. Also, thank you for the compliment! :)
Yes, I didn't actually really do anything with the colors - just change the background and link colour and a few other things.
I read your entry below, though I didn't have time to comment right away. Those are very helpful tips! Thank you for taking the time to post that.
About this entry - it is very thought-provoking. You are very right, we can't waste our time on just story books, it's good to prepare ourselves for what is to come. Mom and I sometimes read segments of it - it is very good, and I think it's good that you have it on your list.
Yes, it is nice to have friends younger than you, though I seem to attract people who are older than me - I don't know why! I'm glad you feel as if you can talk to me plainly - I feel the same way!
She (our kitten) is a lot of fun! She just recently stole a hot dog - I posted about it.
I deleted some PMs in my inbox - you can try now.
With love,
Kylie
PS - I checked out the SSA - it sounds very interesting and fun but I'm too young to join. :( |

You are a very wise young woman! I pray that my girls will be as wise as you when they turn 16.
One of the first books I read (besides the Bible) when I became serious about the Lord, and became serious about marriage and children, was "To train up a child". I read it before I got married, and it was very mind opening. You are so blessed to be able to be exposed to all of the Godly things that your parents have exposed you to at a young age. I had to learn it all later in life. I wish that I could have known the things then, that I know now.
God bless you!!

last year, when I wasn't blogging as much, I actually read some parenting books and enjoyed them! Most of them turn out to have some pretty funny examples in them! This year I have read some more serious parenting books such as Come Back Barbra, I Kissed Dating Goodbye (haven't started this one, I just bought it) The Dating Trap, and one of the best parenting books EVER, the Bible! These will not only prepare me as a parent in the future, they will help me as a teen now.

Oh, I guess they wanted to wait for Father's Day to announce it?
Interesting post... Kids do need to be more mature than they are now. Yeah, I wouldn't say kids should really parenting books at a youngish age. You wouldn't want to turn them off. Hopefully their best example is their parents. :)

| Jocelyn, you will be an incredible wife and mother one day. I totally get you about reading those type of books. I, personally, am not really a parenting type book person--I like to learn from actual parents themselves, see what they are doing and not doing, and then run it through what's in the Bible--but some parenting and other books are a great help! I will definitley read some to see what's out there before getting married or having children! |

| Although I always felt called by the Lord to someday marry and have children, I didn't start reading parenting books until I was expecting my first. I do think there is something to be gained by thinking about parenting style in late adolescence since it's important during courtship to make sure one's future spouse holds compatible beliefs. Better to break off a courtship over irreconcilable differences than to wind up separated or even divorced years later. |
