Yeah, I have been thinking lately about what types of things I am interested in. I want to find something to do out of the home.

I can't wait to see who wins the Tribute To My Dad contest. Unfortunately, I did not have the time to participate.

I definitely see where you're coming from. I wish that more young boys would start thinking about the future rather than sitting around playing mindless video games.

Although, I don't think that you shouldn't have to learn things that you won't necessarily use practically in the future. Do you know why I study algebra? Not because I'll use x = m^2 anytime in the future, but because it stretches my thinking. It enhances my skills in critical thought. It forces me to solve hard problems. There are plenty of hard problems that I'm going to have to solve in my life, even if they aren't algebraic equations. Dissecting cats may not be necessary for your future life, but who knows? Someday you may have a pet cat who has a medical problem. Why pay hundreds of dollars to go to the vet? You may know how to take care of it because of your knowledge of the cat's anatomy! Not that it would always be the best thing to devote your time to, but if you have an opportunity to learn, don't put it off simply because you don't think you'll need it in the future. A broad education is always an advantage, even if it's not used in practical every day life.

As you can see, I am not as down to earth and practical as you. ;-) I suppose we are a good balance, you and I.

I found this post very interesting.
I spend a lot of time thinking about what I want to be when I grow up.

It is rather odd because out of all the children in my family I am the only one who really knows what I want to do when I get older.

The Lord does have our careers planed out for us. In my case, I want to become a missionary to Israel. Ever since I was a kid, I've always loved the Israeli culture and people. Now, in your teens, is a good time to start thinking on your "dream" career or the career that you’d like to have. Your likes and dislikes in a certain field may or may not change in the next few years, including your carrier profile, the one that you are trying to conjure up in your head, but can't seem to reach it. Don't worry! The Lord has our entire life's plan, He has our blueprints. Ttyl

I like the idea of apprienticeships, you learn a lot more from them than you would going to college. In a round about way my dh has done appreinticeships by working at diffrent times with people in the plumbing and electrical fields and he eventually wants to learn farming and the stock market from his dad. I try to think ahead to when we have children and have thought about ways to encourage our them in their pursuits and in areas that we will (as homeschooling parents) find they are stronger in. And then find ways to incorporate those interests or areas into their curriculum. :)

Anyway, I've rambled on...:)

That is a nicely done post. I agree with you. Apprenticeship is a good way to learn about a trade because you get it from the ground up. I'm apprenticed to my nextdoor neighbor who is starting a bussiness sewing clothing for vertically challenged people. Earlier this year I was over there alot sewing. The fabric was really tacky because we were just testing newly made patterns, but I learned enough that I was able to modify the pattern of a dress I made for a recital when the back and neckline were too low.

School--or should I say education-- has certainly changed. Not for the better in most cases. I think what is "required" learning is very important, of course, but it needs to be balanced with life skills. Modern culture and technology requires us to know some things, and that's not necessarily bad, but there's more to learning than calculus and ecology!

Our son has Asperger Syndrome and so we decided by about age 9 that we needed to find something he was good at and pursue it and that turned into to doing the same sort of thing for the other kids. It seemed like common sense to us!

God bless,

Hey there, Miss Jocelyn--

I am looking forward to when you put your new template up! It's so exciting! It will take a little getting used to, though. ;)

I saw LucyLillie's blog! It is so cute! That's funny that you're "starting her early". Anyway, I added her and also Hannah to my friends list. All I have to do is add SuperAngel and your Mom and I can say that I know *all* the Dixons! LOL.

Hope you are doing well! I am looking forward to your next post. And that is all right about the e-mail...

Thanks, I'm glad you thought it was great. Are you doing another one next year?

Looking forward to your next post!

Love ya (too),
Miss Kylie

I think one of the reasons kids have to take various classes and do certain things is to expose them to potential interests or career options.

I've always had an interest in insects, but it wasn't until I did an insect collection for my biology class last year that I really thought about a career in entomology.
