What a great post! I totally agree with you...I wear skirts 24/7, and personally, I love it. Mind if I add another scripture verse to the ones you've already mentioned? Deuteronomy 22:5 pretty much explains it, I think:
"The woman shall not wear that which pertaineth to a man, neither shall a man put on a woman's garment: for all that do so are an abomination unto the Lord thy God."
Thanks for speaking up...it's wonderful to see other people who believe the same way my family does.

Wow...that was a great post, Jocelyn. You really made me think. You worded it wonderfully.

Hmmm... I will have to see about the England thing. I'll try to let you know soon.

No, it was there all along. You seriously live near her?! I thought about it when I saw "Indiana", but I didn't think anything more of it. That's kind of funny!

Love you, also!

Well, I don't wear skirts except on Sundays, but I am very willing to change! As I have always worn pants every day, I feel very uncomfortable in a skirt. Did you feel that way when you first started wearing skirts? This was a very good post, thanks again for encouraging others!

Greetings my friend,

I greatly enjoyed reading this post because I went through a similar journey to biblical femininity myself, and now I hold to the same standards in dress as you. I like wearing skirts as much as I can, and I’d wear them all the time if I had the wardrobe. One book I liked is Christian Modesty and the Public Undressing of America which you’ve probably read (I wouldn’t be surprised. :-). It helped me see that in the Bible, modest is defined as being clothed from at least the neck to the knees.

I haven’t been ignoring your comments, which I’m sure you know. One of the reasons I haven’t been on much is because I haven’t been feeling well lately. But I will try to type up something about my hopechest soon. And I can’t wait to read your book. :-)

With love,
Mandy

I was the same way for a while. I hated wearing skirts and dresses. Now I only wear pants if I absolutely have to. I feel like I am dressing like a guy, if I wear them. I wish we actually could all go back to wearing hoop skirts and long dresses. : )

Hi,
I've read your blog for a while, and I really enjoy it, though this is my first time to comment.
Actually, I just usually wear skirts on Sundays, and jeans most of the time. I wish I could wear skirts, but it would be difficult (and I don't have the wardrobe). Maybe someday I'll be able to.
I appreciate you writing your thoughts. Especially in this day and age, when you know many people will disagree with you. :)

I love this post on Modesty. Kelsey is big on being modest, she wears longer skirts, just because she likes them so much, but she also wears capri pants, below the knees, and long pants. I'm a very proud mom!!! Both of my girls have always been modest and taken great care to be Godly young women.

Thank you!!!

Jocelyn, you hit it right on the spot! I am still at the point where I am wavering as to whether I would prefer to wear a skirt or a dress. It has been a long road for my mother to even get me to wear a skirt.

Today we were shopping, and I went and tried on a skirt, and I suddenly realised that I felt pretty in a skirt.

However, I totally agree with you on the skirt/pants though. I do not think that pants are imodest. It is just so much nicer to FEEL feminine in a pretty skirt!

Thanks for the post

We are to be different from the world not separate from it; the Amish separate them selves from it:--

Thessalonians 5:4-11--5You are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or to the darkness. 6So then, let us not be like others, who are asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 7For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet. 9For God did not appoint us to suffer wrath but to receive salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ. 10He died for us so that, whether we are awake or asleep, we may live together with him. 11Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.--

I do agree with what you said. How are you doing? God bless and ttyl

Hey Jocelyn! I enjoyed reading your post. I love wearing skirts; in fact I have well over twenty of them hanging in my closet. However, I also like wearing my pants, capris and occasionally a pair of shorts. Regardless of what I wear I believe I must dress in a manner that does not cause a guy to stumble and leaves no doubt as to whether I’m a male or female (men should not dress in a feminine manner and women should not dress in a masculine manner.) I think it is very important that our fathers approve of the clothing we wear. But, most of all, I believe modesty is an issue of the heart.

I have attended a church where personal convictions and opinions were preached from the pulpit as biblical standards, yet without scriptural support. In that same church I have seen young ladies who were covered neck to knee (or ankle) who displayed a very immodest heart that was overflowing with pride among other things. I have learned a few things during that time.

Modesty is a heart issue. Matthew 15:19-20 – “For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies. These are the things which defile a man, but to eat with unwashed hands does not defile a man.” My Bible commentary puts this quite well. “The Pharisees and scribes were extremely careful concerning the ostentatious, punctilious observance of hand washing ceremonies. But their inner lives were polluted. They majored in minors and overlooked the matters of real importance. They could criticize the disciples’ failure to keep uninspired traditions, yet plot to kill the Son of God and be guilty of the whole catalog of sin listed in verse 19.” Believer’s Bible Commentary, William MacDonald. We must do a heart check and see what our motive is for why we dress the way we do.

When dressing, are we seeking to honor the Lord with our attire? Colossians 3:17 – “And whatever you do in word of deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him.” When someone looks at the way I dress, and how I conduct myself is it obvious that I am doing “all in the name of the Lord Jesus,” or instead do they see improper attitudes ranging anywhere from promiscuity to pride. Do they see attire that reveals more than it ought to compromising my purity? None of these attitudes or deeds would convey that one is doing “all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Also, when sharing our beliefs and convictions I believe we must be very careful not to judge…..anything. Not the way someone dresses or the condition of their heart because of how they dress. 1 Samuel 16:7 – “But the Lord said to Samuel, ‘Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” Only the Lord can look deep into ones heart and determine where they are in their relationship with Him.

I really appreciate you sharing your thoughts. One site that shares a lot of information about modesty that I enjoy is: http://girltalk.blogs.com/girltalk/modesty/index.html

Oh, yes, I am slowly getting caught up on my commenting! Yeah! How about you? Let me guess….you’re all caught up! LOL!

P.S. I’m sorry this comment is so long! But I do remember that you said that you like long comments…so there you go! LOL!

I totally agree! Sometimes you have to ask yourself, would Mary Jesus's mother wear this? I don't think she would have gone around in a tank top and shorts. What do you think? I think the time you spent on that post was worth it! And no, the fact is, you don't see many girls around here or anywhere wearing knee lenght skirts. I really enjoyed your post! :) I'm also very sorry you have poison ivy and mosquito bites! I can't imagine how itchy you must be Jocelyn!

If you are usually around poison ivy, try eating a couple of the leaves-- probably just swallow it whole. I'm serious! Although best done in early spring (when the leaves are small), it should still work to keep poison ivy from affecting you. For my friends, this keeps it at bay for at least a whole year. Strange, but true!

We wear dresses, skirts, loose skorts, our swimsuits have shorts and skirts, and everything has to come below the knee. We are allowed to wear sleeveless shirts but not outside the house. However, I don't feel comfortable in sleeveless. I also don't feel comfortable in other clothes Mom lets us wear "inside the house" either so I rarely do.

I went swimming once this summer and burned my shoulders because my swim suit doesn't have sleeves (I wanted to have sleeves but I ran out of fabric). I never wear sleeveless so my shoulders weren't tanned to withstand a little sun. Then, I went swimming again a week later, and I burned REALLY BAD. I wore a white t-shirt with little straps (that I only own for wearing under other white shirts) while I cleaned books that evening. UUGGHH!!! I felt so strange. Just thinking about it now makes me shiver!

I'm glad you write on these topics. They're good for us to think on. Thanks!

What type do you wear? I can't get into the long long type at all . ..… and I don't have any that would go with my regular outfits … hmm. I'm also a leaping-running-around-type-of-girl-who-frequently-busts-into -a-ballet-sorta-dance-when I'm-happy-sort-of-girl. So maybe a skirt would not be good for that. (Of course, I don't do the dancing or leaping bit in public.) Ok, I'm really just talking to myself at this point. Alright, enough of my rambles. Have a wonderful glorious Saturday!

Hi, I LOVE wearing skirts. But I don't wear them all the time, as of now I on;y have 2 skirts that I can really wear. BUt I just ordered 2 more, and I just bought fabric to make another. I still wear shorts and capris, capris and the shorts that end right above my knee being my favourite kind of pants. But I feel really comfortable in jeans too. I do wear tank tops and I have a few spagetti strap tops too, but I try to wear them over just regular shirs, or wear a sweater over them. I really am trying to be modest, but it is so hard. I appreciate you sharing your views, and I didnt like to wear skirts either. I had to wear one one day because I had no other shorts or capris clean, but cause I was going to go somewhere for the week and all my clothes were packed so I wore a skirt that I usually only wear for church and I loved it! SO eyah,

Talk to you later

This was a good post. I've been planning one similar from my experiences/point of view. I'm the sort of girl that just naturally loves wearing long skirts/dresses...and I tend to be surprised at the comments it generates from some people that see me in person {more on that later}. :-)

Ooooh...poison ivy. My brother Joseph and sister Mary are sensitive to it. I haven't gotten it so far. I heard that goats eat poison ivy. Have they helped clear out some of it around your land? Of course, when animals get into it they can spread it to you (the oil clings to their coats).

Take care and MAY GOD BLESS,

Wow Jocelyn! That was a great post. It really made think about me. I only wear shorts that go to my knees and jeans. I feel that if I wore only skirts, people might think that that is weird. Yes I know that we should only think of what God wants, but what do you wear when people come over? Or you go somewhere? skirts? Didn't your friends think that you were weird that you always wore skirts? I would wear them, but my friends are tom boys, as am I. so, how do you run and play in skirts?

I am not against skitts, I accully like wearing long ones around the house.

The fact that it was when you were getting the goats is just too funny- I think it is a conspiracy on the part of the livestock. They're out to get us!

Hello Jocelyn,
How are you doing?
Thank you for the comment…It is always nice to hear from you.

Your post was really good….I think that modesty has gone out of fashion in our world today. It’s hard to see other girls dressing in ways that are not biblical….or modest.
Thank you for such a heartfelt post. As you know I love skirts…...so we are the same there. Although I’m trying to get some more skirts made so I have something new to wear….I have three skirts that I wear and... Well….it would be nice to have more options.

I think your post was perfect timing….I’m still working on writing my Old Fashiond Girl post and I’m including a little bit about modesty and what it means to be “Old Fashioned” ….so thanks again for the post.

I’m hope your poison ivy is getting better….that is not fun.

Have a good day my friend,

P.S.
Thank you for saying that I was one of your best friends….that is exactly how I feel about you.

I really appreciate you posting about wearing skirts. I must admit I do not have enough guts to post about it. Our family believes the same way you guys do. We decided a long time ago, at least 9 years ago, to only wear skirts for the women and ankle length pants for the men. Our family is equal amount with my step dad,and 5 year old brother, me and my mother.

I must admit I do get extremely frustrated with wearing skirts all the time because we can never find skirts in the stores unless they are mini-skirts,or are to exspensive. I do feel prettier in skirts and alot more feminine. I still have problems with people always getting on my case about not wearing pants. (My dad and his side of the family are not christians what so ever so.. yeah.. )

I really love this post...modesty and femininity are suffocating in our culture today - which is really sad and disgusting. Pretty much none of the girls in our parish have any modesty standards and it drives me absolutely crazy. Some of them will say that they're striving to be modest and pure, but then they turn around and wear a little pair of shorts or a tank top.

I'm not skirts-only, but I have started wearing more skirts and I really like them. My mom sets a good example for us girls in the way that she dresses. Personally, I've been convicted about little things that may seem trivial to other girls, but really gnaw on my conscience, such as shirts that make a v-shape right under the bust. Even with modest undershirts, I still can't wear them. Showing my shoulders is another thing; and any skin above my knees is out of the question. I don't think those little guidelines are necessary for every girl, but they're things I've been convicted about. We need to be honest with ourselves. What's my motive for zipping this jacket right under the bust? Why do I have to squeeze into these jeans? How hard would it be to simply put on an undershirt so that no one will be able to see through this shirt? We should be very sensitive to the Holy Spirit if He asks us to change something about our appearance.

I could go on, but I'll stop there...lol.

I really need to update...*sigh*
