Hey, ooohhh, first comment, I think. Well, I totally agree, I feel that I am socialized in good company, and if I am eer in bad company, I know how to react. Thank you for your comment, I will have to try that. I think I am going to go post. Soon. But I will post today. Can't wait for the next entry!

I love this qoute from the frist comment~
"We want a respectable socialization (even if there is less of it) - polite, honorable, and Christ-centered."
I consider myself socialble. But I don't go out of my way to make friends with every Tom, Dick and Harry who walks past. And find myself waiting to see what their character is like to see if they are "respectable socialization" and "polite, honorable, and Christ-centered"
RCY: Thanks! I want high speed so bad. 17?!? Well, right now my speed is going 44.0 0_0 Hold on to your hats! On a good day I might get a 42.6! Now that's a rear and beautiful day!! ^_^

Oh, cool post! Yes you are right. It really does matter *who* it is you socialize with. Every single one of my close friends are PS, and sometimes I feel out of place with them. From them I got the habit of saying *like* in every sentence, and saying ummmmmm all the time.
I love it here on HSB because here its *alright* to be homeschooled. It feels right. I don't have to be on my guard every second so I won't *offend* one of my friends when I talk of being HS.
Thank you for a wonderful post!

Sep. 25, 2007 - Two kinds of socialization |
| Posted by LizBeth |
I do have to agree Joci that PS kids do seemed to be less socialized than Homeschooled kids, but they also receive a different kind of socialization than we do.
We are socialized by our parenst, and elders. They are socialized and basically raised by their peers. They are with their peers 8 to 10 hours a day, plus weekends, after school activities, etc....
There are two kinds of socialization and personally, I think we as homeschoolers receive the best kinds.
Blessings,
Liz |

Good entry. I agree. I often use 'like' in like, every other sentence when I'm talking normally.
I sort of have two different ways of talking: One is informal, and I use it in informal chatter. The other sounds more educated and formal ect. But the way you talk does influence how people think of you, and when you are younger, you pick up on what other people say and immitate their way of speech. I always watch how I talk, but when I'm around children that are younger than me I really watch it so that I don't accidentally say something that ruines their innocence etc. This comment is getting long and I'm not even sure if my thoughts are connected enough to be intelligeble.

So true Jocelyn. As parents shielding our kids should be a habit that is a real habit.
As our children grow, we can assign the older children to protect the younger children. I don't know how many movies I've stopped the girls from watching because of behavior problems in them. My sisters haven't watched the new version of Narnia, they have only seen the good parts. No battles, no fights between siblings, etc. They have seen the old version, but not the battles.
Another thing that parents need the shield even more is companions or "friends." Notice what Proverbs 13:20 says: "He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm."
You walk and talk with the wise your wisdom increases. When you walk and talk with a fool wouldn't your wisdom decrease?
Anyway, those are just my thoughts. Great post!

Sep. 26, 2007 - a note from Rose |
| Posted by Rose |
Hello Jocelyn,
Thank you for the comment. On the contrary, you never bore me!
I have read some about Queen Elizabeth ( I did know that she was known as the "virgin queen"), but I didn't know that Virginia was named after her.
You may not have hear of them, but their is a very good series of books by Louis La'mour called the "Sacketts", it is about a family in America , the first one is set a few years before the plymouth, and it goes through the 1900's. They are very good sources of history, and interesting novels too!
Good luck with your math! =)
I wanted to say that your post was very good. You are right, it isn't so much weather or not we we are "socialized" ,but rather who we spend our time with. People say that their children should go to public school so they can be a "light", or just not to listen to those who aren't christians. They are most unfortuanately incorrect, a child (wether he is 6 or 16) isn't fully prepared, or mature enought to handle hundreds of barely supervised children telling him what to do. And sending a child to school, and then telling him not to listen to his teachers about topics that don't agree with their beliefs is hypocritical. To tell them to obey, and disagree is confusing, and a young child needs his parents to show him right and wrong....I could go on and on. =)
I'm sorry that that was rather long...I hope I didn't bore YOU!
Love your friend,
Rebekah Rose J |

| Hmm yeah i agree. When kids are young they shouldn't hang out with bad kids. But there comes a point i think where you have to go out and be a part of the real world. I go to a school that has every type of poor person in it, moms, gangsters, dealers. And you may be supprised how nice some are :) But yeah, deff need maturity before being around too many "bad influences" |

| Posted by Countrybeachbum |
You are wiser then most people your age which just proves the point you were making in your entry. You nailed this issue right on the head, about it not being how many people you socialize with, but who you socialize with.
On the point about how if we had no PS then we would have a more polite society. Just look back to the age of expansion (Old West) most kids went to school at home for almost all of the week and only went one day to a teacher.
Though there was sin and corruption, it was more polite chivalrous society.
One other thing is that you and your sister follow right on each others heels with articles, because she did one on public school then you did one. That is very cool that you tag team, intentional or not.
Keep Rawking for Jesus!! Jed

I agree with you! I don't know how people can day public schoolers are "more socialized" and work better with other people, when most of the things I hear coming out of their mouths is foul language. They don't seem to respect their elders, either. College kids are much better, in some ways...
Thanks! :) Sorry I haven't done anything with the States Exploration. I've just been so busy with college and everything, it slips my mind.

Sep. 26, 2007 - not an expert, but... |
| Posted by A10B8CM6 |
| I have to agree that being around people doing not so good things, small or big. Small in elementary, big by high school. I will add one thing, agree or disagree. It's not really the school itself. It's the people in them. Public schools have to except everyone because of compulsory attendance laws. In other words, the schools reflect society and culture. Public schools were intended to educate everyone, but that is not as easy as everyone thinks. Unfortunately we live in a society where children have parents who are drug addicts, alcoholics, work and material obsessed, promiscious club dancers. In kindergarten there was a boy who always slept in class because he was out until very late with his stripper mother. sad, i know. I am not a public school expert, but I was schooled by them for 13 years, all my education. I think if parents just cared about their children more, things would be better. But the education system itself is rotten. They aren't teaching, they make you shove facts and garbage down your throat ( stuff that may be inappropriate either or that are the teachers opinions and nothing more) then making you hurl it back up onto the paper, then repeat. Our society needs a make over, i think. Great post though. They won't get rid of public schools. wouldn't that be nice.; ) sigh. oh, well. Wow, that was long. God Bless. |

Hey Jocelyn!
Great post! I totally agree with you. I often wonder why everyone thinks that homeschoolers are unsocialized. It's the public schoolers who are the unsocialized ones. Being homeschooled, I think gives you more of a opportunity to socialize, because you are around all age groups as opposed to just kids your age.

Jocelyn,
Yes I got your e-mail and plan to e-mail you today.
Your post was great! It is so true that the public school children are socialized, just in the wrong way. The behavioral differences between public and home schooled children that I know are very great. Homeschooled children are usually much better behaved all around. I can not say though that all the differences are due to socialization. Many of the poor public schooled children are missing Christ as well as anything else. Many or all of the homeschooled children I know are christians or are raised by very Christian parents. Enough of my rambling...
We just received our Girlhood Home Companion, but I have not read it yet. I did glance over it and it looks wonderful and I really like the very old issues (the ones bound in book form). I doubt your article is as bad as you make it sound. Mrs. Novak will be in my prayers.

Sep. 26, 2007 - A Truth for Life... |
| Posted by illiteratepoet |
Since this caught me on a melancholy sort of day... yanno, when I was married, my husband had left the church and the words that came out of his mouth would often make a sailor blush. Neither our children nor I ever copied that sort of thing.
Where we first had to stay when he was gone, there were a lot of kids and they came from very different backgrounds and those kids used all sorts of inappropriate language ans when they started picking it up I knew it wasn't all their fault... they were young to be having to discern so much so quickly... Even though they had heard their father speak that way, it never crossed their minds till they heard other kids, their peers...
So what was my excuse? After all those years of NOT picking up his language, I went to work for a domestic violence shelter and most of the women I worked with (save one) were feminists and cussing like a man was part of proving their equality. (No joke - they even said it themselves.) *I* knew God expected me to represent Him with my languages, had ALWAYS hated being vulgar... and yet there I was starting to find those words slip out of my mouth when it was MY peers always speaking that way. I know God used me in great ways for Christian woman in hard times while I worked there, and I have no regrets, but I also learned a lot about why so many Proverbs read as they do... and that I am not so much holier than anyone else if I always place myself in the wrong crowds without the time to use constant prayer and discernment...
So Amen sister! :-) |

Hi,
I was looking at your I Am From poem in the GHC. It was really nice! I think that last year, when we first started blogging, I heard about the contest and wrote one too.
Here it is:
I Am From
I am from the clash of swords,
The sting of darts, the spray of rocky waterfalls
From the mist of mountains in the clouds,
From the silver rain lighted by the moon I have come.
I am from a hoard of treasured fantasies,
A million magical worlds combined in one,
From the highest branches of the tallest trees,
From summer sun heating hazelnut bushes I have come.
I am from swirling flakes of snow falling to and fro
A frosty night spotted with stars.
From sad memories of beautiful faces lost in the night,
From icy tears falling in a dark land I have come.
I am from a heart that aches when I hear
The cry of many suffering children.
I am from an imagination running free and wild and untamed
Through the darkness. over the mountains,

MJ, that is very true. I truly wish that everybody was well socialized. I really know that when you see a homeschooled family vs. a public school family you really see the differences. Most homeschooled family's are well mannered and well behaved whereas there are some other family's that go to public and their kids are just so misbehaved and have rude manners...but I'm not saying all. Well anyhow greta entry and keep them going:)
Thanks for the great comment. I know have some big trouble with spelling but I am doing better each day by the grace of God. I will *definitely* try harder!
God Bless!

I can atest to the fact that it is incredibly difficult to break the bad habits that kids pick up in public school!! I am still battling that in some cases, and my girls haven't been in public school in almost a year!!
I certainly wish that we lived closer, as I believe that the girls and I could learn a whole LOT from your family!
