From the Heart...

• May. 21, 2006 - Stepping Heavenward...

Time to read seems like such a luxury at times.  We've just gotten home from a few days away.  Normally I take at least 3-4 books ~ mostly non-fiction on education or health.  [I have such difficulty finding really wonderful, Christian fiction worth reading.  Feel free to leave some suggestions in the comment section.]

This time I took just one book (fictional) that has made several journies with me before, but has never been read.  I read all but the first and last chapters while away.  I finished it this morning just as the sun was rising.  This book touched my heart all the way through, perhaps you've read it...Stepping Heavenward: One Woman's Journey to Godliness by Mrs. E. Prentiss (1869).

This is no ordinary book of fiction.  No preachy bit of non-fiction.  The main character is so real from beginning to end.  The wise women she encounters along the way are beautiful.  I laughed, I cried, I was inspired. I want to read it again and write down the bits of godly wisdom I gleaned.

I've heard it said of great books that we should never just "get through the book," on the contrary we should "allow the book to get through us."  This book certainly got through me and I pray that I retain at least part of His wisdom that it bestowed on my heart and mind.

You may be interested in joining a reading group here at HSB. We just started and are reading "How to Read a Book" by Mortimer Alder. I know your intelligent input would be welcomed. Here is the blog to see what it's about:
http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/ClassicalMamma/ . If you are interested just email her (wish I could remember her name arrgh).

I used to read read read, but I seem to have a few too many pots stewing right now. I am still on a decluttering direction, I hope to have more gone before our next move.

Your blog is looking more lived-in :) Lots of contests going on, check my latest post about the geocaching contest.

I've read this book several times, and you're right you need to let it soak in. There's much to glean from this book. It's the book I keep purchasing over and over since I tend to lend my favorite books to friends.

We sound similar in that I also like to read non-fiction books and can never decide on "just one" for road trips. Or my nightstand for that matter.

Francine Rivers is my favorite Christian fiction writer. Try her books, you might like them. I found them in the library and the first one I read was The Last Sin Eater. It was a page turner, and now my husband is reading it.

I found you on random blog. I had heard many times but just also recently read Stepping Heavenward. I laughed and cried and I could relate with many things she went through. Thank you for sharing.

Hello again! I took the Jane Austen heroine quiz and I was most like Marianne Dashwood as well! It was a fun quiz. Hope you had a great Independence Day!

• Jul. 23, 2006 - You have a delightful site!

Thank you for posting on my site (Edelweiss). It would seem we have much in common. :o) I've added you as a 'friend' and will look forward to visiting your site often.

While not decidedly Christian in nature, I have read the entire list of books by Bess Streeter Aldrich and came away refreshed, uplifted, touched, and encouraged. I've begun a book by Charlotte Bronte named Shirley but am experiencing a challenge 'getting into it'. As a family we're reading The Lost Ruby, by Von Schmid and offered by Lamplighter.

Jane Austen novel quiz

The Pride and Prejudice type: Truly an Austenite, this type is a Romantic at heart, but they always keep their head and are wary of melodrama. Lively, clever, and independent. These people are easily amused by their own foibles and the quirkly foibles of others. They lament society today, and dream of the time when guys were gentlemen and girls were ladies.

Which Jane Austen Character Are You?

You're Mariane Dashwood from Sense & Sensibility! You are the romantic youngster, also found in Jane Austen's work as Catherine of Northanger Abbey and possibly Georgiana Darcy of Pride and Prejudice. You wander through life like Red Riding Hood in the forest, picking wildflowers and humming a happy song... and you can't see the wolf right in front of you! You wear your heart on your sleeve. No one need guess what you think.
