The Contenders

• Feb. 20, 2006 - Oatmeal vs. Peanut Butter Cookies

Here it is, the first debate.  Be sure to read over The Rules if you have not already done so.  (The Rules can be found in the links section of the sidebar.)

Each week I will cover any new information, links and rule changes in New Business.  If I feel we need to go over a rule, or remind members of links that can help, then it will be covered in Old Business.

New Business:

1.  If you have links you think would be helpful and would like to see in the sidebar of this blog, please e-mail me the information.  I am trying to keep the comments portion of this blog for the actual agruements on the debate posts.  You can add, this is fun, great topic and what not at the end of your comments (arguements).

2.  EVERYONE is invited to participate in every debate.  Teens, children this includes you!

3.  Please be sure to let your fellow bloggers know about this debate!  The more contenders we have the more fun it will be, as well as educational.

Old Business:

1.  We are starting out small and easy!  These first debates may not be able to be supported by scripture.  We are just getting a feel for what a true debate looks like in a fun way.  Heavier topics will come later as we all learn to keep emotion out of our arguements!

2.  REMEMBER!  In the heading of your comment state which side you are contending for!

3.  Everyone who enters an arguement (comment) will be made a member of, The Contenders, unless they specifically state that they do not want to be a member.

The Debate

Which cookie is the most healthy for the human body, (strictly)oatmeal, or (strictly) peanut butter?

Let's get ready to debate!

Well I'm going to go with Oatmeal. For one oatmeal is GREAT for the heart. And babies can have it LOL (no peanut butter until 1yr)

I am debating for the oatmeal cookie side, and here are my arguments.

Oatmeal is a cereal, and on the food pyramid cereals are listed on the bottom, the section you need the most of during the day. So, if you were eating oatmeal cookies after dinner, you would be getting more servings of cereal!

I went back to edit my comment because I forgot to but in the subject line and noticed I forgot a couple other things in my comment, and then forgot AGAIN to add oatmeal in the subject line. And now it will not let me edit again. Not sure if you can edit it for me, but I cant. SORRY!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to say peanut butter. Not only does it have protein but also a good fat in small quantities. Of course I wouldn't want to buy peanut butter with added sugar or salt. Just the pure form. Dr.s have recommended eating a small handful of raw nuts each day. In comparing my two recipes out of my Better Homes cookbook I see that the peanut butter has less sugar and calls for an optional use of honey for half of the sugar. Honey is extremely good for you especially for those who have allergies.

I'm going to say Oatmeal cookies are healtier because far too many people have peanut allergies. You wouldn't want to make a batch of peanut butter cookies and find out someone had an allergy to peanuts. Who ever heard of an oat meal allergy?

I have to say oatmeal cookies because alphatoxins are present in peanuts. Peanut allergy is nearly always an allergy to the mold aflatoxin-as the name implies, a toxin from mold.

Actually some people are allergic to oats. Some of those that have celiac disease can't eat oats and would make peanut butter cookies. With their own special flours of course. 1 out 133 people have celiac disease, while 1 out of 200 have a peanut allergy.

Peanuts are a good source of protein for vegetarians. Peanuts also contain heart-healthy resveratrol, a compound also found in red wine. (grapes)

Babies may not be able to eat peanuts their first year of life, but the March of Dimes recommends that pregnant moms eat peanuts in the first few weeks of pregnancy. Peanuts also contain folate, which help prevent neurol tube birth defects.

I say Oatmeal cookies are more healthful, because Oats help lower blood cholesterol, thereby cancelling out the bad effects of the butter used in the dough. They can also be made with honey, and the raisins serve as a fruit. Karen
