Today when I was in my car I heard David Jeremiah on the radio. He was talking about a pastor named Maltbie Babcock who lived from 1858-1901. According to David Jeremiah, each day Pastor Babcock would say to his wife or church staff, "I am going out to see my Father's world." He lived in Lockport, NY and enjoyed the beauty of farms, orchards, Lake Ontario and a deep ravine where as many as 40 different species of birds found a sanctuary. I too, love to go out to see and enjoy my Father's world.
You don't have to look far to see God's beautiful creation. Just seeing the beautiful faces of my husband and children is my first sight of God's creation each day. Then I look outside on my back porch and see bluejays, Carolina wrens (singing their little hearts out), chickadees and cardinals on the rails of my deck and in the beautiful tree just off my porch. They are waiting patiently for me to come out and feed them birdseed. They are so beautiful! Of course there is the sunshine through the trees and the mountains that we can see as we drive around our county. What is a unique part of God's creation in your area?
I love the thought there was a man like Pastor Babcock that lived many years before me and enjoyed his Father's world like I do today.
Pastor Babcock also enjoyed music. He played the organ, piano and violin. He wrote a beautiful, and probably very familiar, hymn celebrating God's handiwork in nature.
This Is My Father's World
This is my Father's world,
And to my listening ears
All nature sings, and round me rings
The music of the spheres.
This is my Father's world:
I rest me in the thought
Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas--
His hand the wonders wrought.
This is my Father's world,
The birds their carols raise,
The morning light, the lily white,
Declare their Maker's praise.
This is my Father's world:
He shines in all that's fair;
In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,
He speaks to me everywhere.
This is my Father's world,
O let me ne'er forget
That though the wrong seems oft so strong,
God is the Ruler yet.
This is my Father's world:
The battle is not done;
Jesus who died shall be satisfied,
And earth and heav'n be one. |
