• Jan. 26, 2006 - This is My Father's World

Today when I was in my car I heard David Jeremiah on the radio.  He was talking about a pastor named Maltbie Babcock who lived from 1858-1901.  According to David Jeremiah, each day Pastor Babcock would say to his wife or church staff, "I am going out to see my Father's world."  He lived in Lockport, NY and enjoyed the beauty of farms, orchards, Lake Ontario and a deep ravine where as many as 40 different species of birds found a sanctuary.  I too, love to go out to see and enjoy my Father's world.

You don't have to look far to see God's beautiful creation.  Just seeing the beautiful faces of my husband and children is my first sight of God's creation each day.  Then I look outside on my back porch and see bluejays, Carolina wrens (singing their little hearts out), chickadees and cardinals on the rails of my deck and in the beautiful tree just off my porch.  They are waiting patiently for me to come out and feed them birdseed.  They are so beautiful!  Of course there is the  sunshine through the trees and the mountains that we can see as we drive around our county.  What is a unique part of God's creation in your area?

I love the thought there was a man like Pastor Babcock that lived many years before me and enjoyed his Father's world like I do today.

Pastor Babcock also enjoyed music.  He played the organ, piano and violin.  He wrote a beautiful, and probably very familiar, hymn celebrating God's handiwork in nature.

This Is My Father's World

This is my Father's world,

And to my listening ears

All nature sings, and round me rings

The music of the spheres.

This is my Father's world:

I rest me in the thought

Of rocks and trees, of skies and seas--

His hand the wonders wrought.

This is my Father's world,

The birds their carols raise,

The morning light, the lily white,

Declare their Maker's praise.

This is my Father's world:

He shines in all that's fair;

In the rustling grass I hear Him pass,

He speaks to me everywhere.

This is my Father's world,

O let me ne'er forget

That though the wrong seems oft so strong,

God is the Ruler yet.

This is my Father's world:

The battle is not done;

Jesus who died shall be satisfied,

And earth and heav'n be one.

That is a beautiful song.

I was invited to your blog by ClagetteFLStyle. I was telling her how we may move to NC God willing--please pray! Anyways, she told me you live in NC aka Heaven on Earth.

I just came back Sunday, we all LOVE it there! It was the first time I have really ever been there. I never saw mountains like that, it was GORGEOUS!!!

Where do you live? We visited Ashe County. We're headed back in March IIGW (if it's God's will)

I hope you came by my blog and say hello:)

God Bless,
Amber

What a beautiful world we live in. So often we don't take the time to enjoy what the Lord has placed around us. I have the song going through my head now and I thank you for that gentle reminder.

On a side note...the curriculum we use is called "My Father's World".

Blessings,

Angela

I LOVE that song! I can just hear it now...kinda stuck in my head, actually. It's the first thing I thought of when I read your entry title.

Love,

I loved reading your post today! You actually are a very good writer. Somehow, deep in my gut, I feel like I am supposed to be living in your neck of the woods. We ALMOST moved to NC once ... but then, I know the Lord has put us in the church we are in, I have my daughter nearby ...

And we do live in "God's Country" as well. Central NY is beautiful, and I live among rolling hills and country roads. Now, these country roads are covered in snow a good part of the year. But that can be beautiful as well.

Your post goes along well with the Beth Moore teaching I listened to first, on Jan. 25.

God bless!

I think of that song so often when I think of you, Dear Friend! I was humming it the other day as I walked up to your home! :>)
My father always called it his "Science Song." He told us, as student teachers, that it would be a tremendous blessing to teach that song to our classrooms and sing it before each science lesson.
My favorite line is this:
"This is my Father's world, O let me ne'er forget, that though the wrong seems oft so strong God is the Ruler yet!" So true, so true! (Isn't it amazing how the truth never changes. What was true in the 1800's is still true today.)
So glad to know the history behind such a beloved hymn! Thanks for sharing.

I haven't heard or sung it in years but I remember it well. We sang it from time to time at the Episcopal church I attended in college.

Our Father's world shouts out to us about His character. He reveals Himself to us through His creativity ~ his love of beauty, music, variety, complexity, colour. What an amazing God we have the honor of loving and serving.

I LOVE that hymn! Our area is great for sky watching--the gently rolling plains offer an unobstructed view (no sky scrapers, and sigh... no mountains), but as much as I miss hills and mountains, it is great for cloud watching! Glorious sunsets and sunrises. The tumbleweeds and, in the spring, the wild flowers have an untamed and rugged beauty as well!

Lovely post! Thank you for helping us all reflect on the beauty of God's creation! And what a lovely hymn! My children are memorizing "All things Bright and Beautiful", and the hymn, "This is my Father's World" would be a perfect compliment to that study! :D

Not only do I love that hymn, but I SO appreciate you reminding me that not only are the birds, trees and all of God's world's beauty our Father's World, but so are our children and husbands and may we remember that as we look on their faces! Thanks so much!!
