Starting Slow

We aren't officially starting our school year until the last week of August.  I thought, though, that we should start this week doing some learning things so our brains don't get too rusty.  The past few days have been nice.

We will be using Memoria Press' guide to D'Aulaire's Book of Greek Myths this year.  I won't be using the student book, but will read over the Teacher's Guide and use discussion as our way of going through the curriculum.  We did the first lesson on Mon.   It went very well and Mia asked to do more (this is a very good sign.)   I know that many people do not see the purpose of reading Greek Myths.  Their argument is that it confuses the child of things of God and His Power.  I understand their concern.  When we read about the many Greek gods, we always compare it to what it says in the Bible and what we know about God.  I have read myths to Mia since she was 5 years old.  She knows that there is only one powerful and mighty God.  Whenever we would read about a god, Mia would say, "Those silly people, there is only one God and no one is more powerful than He is."   I haven't come across anything that has confused Mia in her understanding of our Lord and Savior.   This is why we press on.   I think it is important to know who the gods are and the various myths because there are many allusions to these stories in other works of literature.  From where I am sitting now, familiarity with the Greek myths now, will help in decreasing confusion in the future.

I digress.  Anyway,  we have started the Greek Myth book with positive results.  Rocky has been working in his game and maze book.  Mia will be making cupcakes this afternoon for supper.  Rocky has requested that we watch a DVD all together.  This is a biggie for me because I am not a movie watcher.  We also have a new read aloud that is spawning great discussion about families and how they come in different shapes and sizes.

I am hoping that in doing some learning acitivities in a casual manner that it will help transition us when the crunch comes with the beginning of school.  We will soon find out on Aug. 26th.
