Musings of a Prairie Girl

There's So Much to Do

It occurred to me  a few days ago that school is going to start in two weeks.  What?  What did you just say?  Two weeks?  School is going to start in two weeks?  Oh my goodness!

Yep, that was my response.  Now I can't say that I wasn't aware of it creeping up on me.  I knew very well that school was going to start in two weeks.  But I didn't  know it.  Do you see the difference there?  I didn't have cerebral knowledge of this little nugget until Tuesday.  Before that it was just surface knowledge.

So now that I am aware of this on a much deeper level,  I am also aware of how quick I need to get my behind into gear.  I have nothing ready for school.  Okay, that is not totally correct.  I do have a list of things that I want to do for the month of September.  That's it.  So I have had my index finger planted quite firmly on the "On'  button of my printer.  I have been printing up a storm.  To give you an idea of the furor of that storm.  I have gone through one ink cartridge in four days.  Enough said.

Let me tell you what I have done this week and what is yet to be done.  Please, please, let me tell you.  There is nothing I like more than to talk homeshool stuff.  Problem is, I am the only one in my real life who possesses this same ideosyncrasy.  So please, let me tell you.

    Okay, if you insist.

I have copied off Secrets in the Woods (I can't remember who wrote it.)  This is a natural history selection from Ambleside Online.  I have hole punched it and have placed it in a binder for handy dandy reading.  This will be Mia's task for the month of September.   Yet to do:  I have to read the book first so I know what to talk to her about.

I have copied off Mythological Creatures.  This is a lapbook kit from Hands of a Child.  Mia has requested that she do this for September.  It looks quite good.  We are both excited to get started.  I have ordered the books for this study.

I have copied some pages from the KISS grammar site.  Yet to do: I have more copies to make because I would like a month's worth of exercises so I don't have to keep printing.  I am trying to be more efficient with my oganizational skills.    I have also copied some worksheets from the Scott Foresman  grammar site.  I am just going to lay these sheets out in case Mia becomes inspired to do more grammar.  One can only hope.

I have started to print out The Water Babies by Charles KIngsley.  We won't be doing this book until October, but I would like to have it already to go so that I can read it before Oct.

I have printed out the poems by William Blake.  We will be reading his poems for the next three months.

I have ordered all of the library books that we will need for the month of September.

Yet to do: We are going to read A LIttle Princess by Frances Burnett Hodgson in September.  This year, I would like us to delve a bit more deeply into our literature selections.  I also would like to pick out some themes or character traits from the books and read what the Bible says about these things.  I want Mia to become comfortable with using the Word of God as the ultimate authority on all things.  So I have been looking up humility, compassion and friendship in the dictionary and the concordance.  I am wiritng out Bible verses on these topics and we will look very closely at them with Mia in the form of discussion.

That seems to be it.  I may just be ready for school in two weeks time.  Isn't it amazing what panic can do to a person?

Your plans and ideas for this year sound great! I like the way you are setting up your days- I'm still trying to figure that out. And thanks for the link to the Scott Foresman grammar stuff - that's wonderful! The KISS grammar link wasn't working for me - do you have another link for that one? Thanks!

All the best for September

Sounds like the planning is coming together, know well the dead printer cartridge weeks, although I'm not needing as much of the planning stuff these days which is great.

The water babies is a definite pre-read especially his asides to the kids. My daughter danced it last year for ballet and of course we took that incentive to read the book - until it got too heavy.

Thank you for the heads up on Water Babies. I will definitely make time to read through it on my own first.
