Musings of a Prairie Girl

RSS Feed

To those of you who read this blog, I am sure it is quite obvious that this blog is a generic, no-frills blog.  There are no fancy graphics.  No pictures,  No lists on the sidebar.  No blogroll.  Nothing fancy, just my not-so-humble opinions on life.

The reason that there is not fancy schmancy stuff on this blog is that I don't know how to put the fancy schmancy stuff on this blog.  I am totally computer illiterate.  Hence, the plain blog.   I don't know how to do all the extras and quite frankly,  I don't have the time to learn how to do the extras.  Writing my posts takes enough time as it is.  So  with this blog you just get the basics.

However,  I received an email today wondering why my blog's RSS feed didn't work.  Well, it doesn't work because I didn't know how to get it to work.  Okay,  I will shamefully admit  that I don't even know what a blog's RSS Feed is.  See,  I told ya.  Painfully illiterate.  I have no business owning a blog because I don't even know half of the things that go along with it.

It is late (or early depending on your point of view) and I can't sleep so I decided to see if I could figure out exactly what a RSS Feed is.   Well, I still don't know what it is but I think I have it working now.  At least it works for me.  So to the person who emailed me (if you are  still reading)  I think the RSS Feed works now.  If it doesn't work,  I apologize but I don't think I can figure it out.  There is only so much a 45 yr. old brain can handle.  RSS Feeds is not one of them.

Blogger does it automatically or I would be in trouble, too.

I wasn't the one who emailed you but I am glad you appear to have the RSS feed working -- at any rate, Google Reader allowed me to subscribe to your blog for the first time. I have tried to sub to your blog before to get regular updates, but without success. So I THINK what you did may have worked " ).

Imagine you're standing at a magazine store. You were in last week and picked up the most recent version of Time Magazine, and now you're back to get this weeks edition. You notice that McLeans Magazine has this week's edition out, but where's the Time Magazine? It's not up on the shelves yet, they must have had a printing delay. You'll have to come back tomorrow for the Time magazine.

So - when you read blogs, it's like if you had to go to each publisher to find out if the latest edition was out, instead of going to the magazine store.

An RSS feed allows a site like www.google.com/reader to put up the latest editions of your favourite blogs, so that you can see every "new edition" out, like looking at that magazine rack. It means you can read all your favourite blogs by only loading ONE website.

Now the downside to this is, sometimes formatting doesn't come through on the rss reader, so reading is sometimes a challenges. Also, some people's photos come through, while others don't. I have not yet figured this out - mine don't show up, and neither does my formatting. Also, if you want to leave a comment, you do have to go to that person's actual blog to leave a comment, you can't comment from the reader.

Hope this helps you understand WHY people want your RSS feed on.

Sombra, thank you for explaining it to me. Yet another thing I have mastered this year. :)

I was the one that emailed you and I am so happy that you have it fixed. I was missing your wonderful posts because Iwould forget to come check your site. Now I don't have to worry about it because I get to read all your new posts as they come into my reader. Thank-you! I didn't know anything about RSS feeds and readers til a little while ago either so I understand how you feel. :)
