I have been noticing a trend in the last few weeks. We seem to come out of the gates on Monday with lots of energy and pizzazz. We get lots of work done on Monday. We feel strong, Don Pardo! Then as the week continues on, we slowly ebb into a state of weakness. In other words, we get lots done on Monday and then nothing else for the rest of the week.
It is looking, so far, as if this trend is being carried on into this week as well. We got so much done today. We had lots of things crammed into our day. Let me tell you about it (you knew this was coming, didn't you?)
We started our day off with circle. We did a few preschool songs for Missy. We read some poetry by Hilda Conklin.(Mia and I have discussed this at great length-- like every time we read a Hilda Conklin poem--and Mia has decided that she is not partial to this poet. The reason being that Miss Conklin's poetry does not rhyme. According to Mia, if it doesn't rhyme, it can't be good poetry.) Today we started learning Spanish. We had tried to do this two years ago ('tried' being the operative word here) but it didn't work out--one of our many gaps. Anyway, I have had Easy Spanish for the last year and thougth that I should actually use it before it becomes obsolete. The problem with this, though, is that I can't get the activitiy sheets to show up on my computer so I am going to have to take it to Staples and let them print it off. Hence, my procrastination. But today we just listend to the CD and tried our hand at the words.
Rocky was not with us during circle as he had a little spiff with his sisters and joined his dad in the shop for some 'manly time.' He came back in time for Candian History. We read a chapter from The First History of Canada by Donalda Dickie. We read through (okay, skimmed through would be more like it) New France of the Discovering Canada series by Robert Livesay. We read about Radisson and Groseilliers, as well as Jean Talon and the seigneurial system. Mia gave a narration. She copied it into her mainbook and she drew a picture of what the seigneurial system actually looked like.
While Mia was doing that, Rocky and did a reading lesson and I read Winnie the Pooh to him and his younger sister. By this time, Mia was done so we moved on to Candian Geography. We looked at Canada as a hole and talked about provinces and their capital cities. Both Mia and Rocky worked on their map workbooks.
Thankfully it was lunch time. Time for Chinese Food left overs. You gotta love leftovers when you homeschool.
After lunch, Mia did some Vocabu_Lit and math review. We worked on grammar. She is learning about state of being verbs and helping verbs. She did some diagramming and then moved on to copywork. Rocky did his ETC book, copywork and math review as well. He was then told that he was a free bird and could go outside to play. Mia decided she wanted me to read The White Cat, an old French fairy tale.
Last but not least, it was time for Missy's turn at school. When the other two found out what their sister was going to do, they decided to stay inside and join her. Missy is spending time on the number 3. Missy painted a triangle (3 sides) with watercolours using the primary colours (3 colours--see the theme that is happening here?) Her triangle turned out very good. I have always used wet-on-wet when we have watercoloured but I didn't today because I was too lazy to fill the bin with water. It didn't turn out that bad. Mia has informed me, though, that the next time we paint with watercolours, we need to use water. So, there you go. I guess not everyone enjoyed using the dry method.
By the time we were finished with our painting, it was already 3:30. That was a full day! I am tired as a result. It will be interesting to see if the rest of our week follows the trend that is explained above. I don't know if I can go full tilt every day. Just the thought of it, exhausts me.
