Musings of a Prairie Girl

Two Impromptu Visits

We had a very full and surprising day yesterday.  We have been blessed, recently, with the friendship of another homeschool family.  I had met this mom, K, 6 years ago when Rocky was a toddler.  Her oldest wasn't quite a year old.  They moved away soon after our meeting and we lost track of them.  Our paths have crossed again.  They are now homeschooling their children.  They have a 6 yr. old boy and a 3 yr. old girl.  We have been meeting once a week to go swimming together.  It's only been a few months but I am appreciating K's friendship so much.  Our children are also enjoying their time together.  This has been an answer to prayer.

Yesterday morning at 8:30, my phone rings.  It is K asking if they can come to the farm for the day for a visit.  She knows this is very spur-of-the-moment but she would really like to get away for the day.  I am so happy that she is comfortable enough with me that she is able to call and ask for an impomptu visit.  The kids and I were very excited about their visit.   Not very many people like to come out to the farm because it is out in no-man's land.  When we visit with people, it is usually us having to go into town.  This gets a bit tiresome after awhile.  It is so refreshing to have someone ask if they can come out to our house.

So K and her two children came out for a play and lunch.  We have a creek close to our farm.  So we drove the kids down to the creek so that they could play and explore.  We didn't even make it to the creek.  The kids were having so much fun in exploring the surrounding hills that we didn't even make it to the creek.  The kids  found a garter snake,  crocuses,  a zebra rock,  tons and tons of juniper and  cactus (they found this the hard way--Rocky fell on one.  Ouch!)  They had a wonderful time playing together.

We stayed down at the creek for a couple of hours then we made our way back home to have hamburgers for lunch.   We had to cut our visit short as Rocky had a speech appointment.  But those few hours were quite  enjoyable.   We love impromptu visits.

Okay,  maybe I should qualify that last statement as  "We love most impromptu visits."   Yesterday morning,  while I was waiting for K to come,  I had to help our hired hand move vehicles.  It was our last day of seeding so they had one last push to get everything done that day before the forecasted rain came.  They were seeding down at the creek.  We had to move the grain truck and the seeder down there.  We had taken the grain truck down and I was waiting in the van for the hired man to gas up the tractor so that I could follow him down to the creek and then give him a ride back to the farm.  I was sitting in the van, waiting, when I saw a flash of movement on the floor of the passenger side.  I looked over and, sure enough, there was a mouse running in a  circle on the floor.   I was very proud of myself,  I didn't scream but I did get out of the van in a great hurry.   I ran to the tractor and told the hired man of my discovery.  We went back to look for the visitor but he was not there.   I think he came through the motor and underneath the glove box. He probably had just landed on the floor when I saw him.  When he realized he was not alone, he went back the way he came.  At least this is the story I am sticking to.  It helps me get back into the van thinking that he has gone.   When I took Rocky to his speech appointment, though,  I kept glancing at the passenger side floor and all around just in case my theory was a false one.
