The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett is a cute little story about the Queen of England's reading habits. This book says quite a bit about people's notions of reading. The book starts out with the Queen inadvertently discovering the Book Mobile at Buckingham Palace. Unbenownst to the Queen, the Book Mobile has been making weekly visits to the Palace for a long time. When the Queen discovers the Mobile, she thinks it would only be good manners to take a book out. She didn't really like reading but she took her borrowed book home and promptly set out to read it. The book was a bit dry and boring but, under the umbrella of politeness, the Queen finished the book and took it back the next week. Again, feeling pressured, she took another book out, this time, though, the book was quite interesting and grabbed her attention. Here is where the problems begin.
Due to her interest in reading, the Queen's interest in other things wavered. She tried to think of any excuse she could to get out of her royal duties so that she could stay home and read. ( I can relate to this.
) Her staff are at their wits end trying to get those books away from her. Everywhere she goes, she has a book. She soon discovers that not everyone shares the same opinion as she does, regarding books (another thing I can relate to
) The rest of the book tells about the attempts of her staff to avert her love of books.
This book is an easy, but enjoyable, read. God Save the Queen! (and her love for books!)
Next book: Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
