A Spider is a Spider is a Spider...Unless it's Poisonous
If you know anything about spiders, you'll want to take issue with my title. A web article reminded me today (in a "duh" moment), that all spiders are poisonous, as every spider uses its poison to paralyze its prey before chowing down. Bees and wasps, also "poisonous" critters, use their venom when scared or agitated.
Spiders, it appears, rarely bite humans, and usually only do so when trapped, like between a foot and the inside of a shoe, which is exactly what happened to me a few months ago. The spider was fairly small, but the experience wasn't exactly pleasant.
I brought up the subject of poisonous spiders because my inquisitive children did some sleuthing on their own today and disproved my "fisher spider" theory (please see my "Creepy Crawlies x2" entry, below). They believe my short-lived not-so-little friends were actually giant house spiders (isn't that a nice name...), not fisher (a.k.a. nursery) spiders. I did a little searching, too, and hobo spiders also seem to fit the bill, looks-wise.
That's creepy in itself, as hobo spiders, which are fairly common from Alaska down to Montana, across to Oregon and over to Utah, have a "necrotizing" bite. In other words, the tissue around the bite has the potential to decay. Ugh. That would truly be an awful thing to experience. I won't show pictures of hobo spider bites here; those are easy enough for you to look up on your own, if you have the stomach for that sort of thing.
I will, however, include a picture of a giant house spider, which is most likely the species that visited us:
HOWEVER...the picture below is of a male hobo spider, and I think the body of this one is closer to what I actually saw...twice. I think the jury may have to remain out on this subject!
All of that said, I really am not a spider person, and have no plans to post any more spider pictures. These guys are giving me a good case of the willies...almost as much as the real ones on our bedroom wall did.
Huh. Both you and Carpebanana have posted about spiders. *shudders and looks between the couch cushions* Ugh! Yuk! Spiders!
There was a tunnel-building spider (possibly a hobo spider) that decided to build a tunnel inside Mom's purse. We vacuumed it up right there without trying to identify it.
I'm with you on the spiders. I can't stand them. Sorry to hear you have them in your home. I'll certainly be praying that you don't find anymore of them!
I love the photos. Spiders are very interesting, but I wouldn't want to get too close! Come on by and see what I have planned on my blog this coming Wednesday.
I am fascinated by spiders! I don't like to TOUCH them- that's yicky, but I LOVE to watch them. I only kill the dangerous ones, and all others are either left alone to do their business, taken outside if they are big, or frightened away so dh doesn't kill them. Usually after identifying and/or capturing them.( I know my family thinks I am nuts..) I am amazed at all the tiny creatures that live and move all over our planet- spiders too... having one near your baby's crib is kind of scary though- I would have been a little freaked by that simply because the little one may touch it, and get bitten or heaven forbid- eat it.
I hate spiders! One time my 13yo called to tell me there was a "fire the size of her hand" near the door. I freaked, called 911 and raced home (I live in a wooden house so you can imagine my terror). As I drove into the yard the 911 operator (who I was talking to on the phone the entire time) said, "ma'am we got through to your daughter. She says it's a "spider" not a fire". So I called 911 over a spider! Mind you it was a spider the size of my hand!
Are you homeschooling ... anyway? Very few of us, if any, escape the tragedies and other disappointments of life. In the summer of 2004, we experienced a tragedy of our own with the death of our pre-born baby. It was a devastating blow, but that year we homeschooled ... anyway. We were blessed with another little one, but were soon face to face with my husband's cancer diagnosis (multiple myeloma) in early 2006. And again, we homeschooled...anyway. If you need support, encouragement, or just want to know what "a day in the life" is like for another family who chooses to continue homeschooling in spite of difficulties, stick around! I'm glad you're here, and that I can be here, too, to share the ups and downs (even the days when I feel like I'm skidding sideways) of our homeschooling family: Dad, Mom, two teenagers, a preteen, and a toddler. And be sure to visit my website: http://www.homeschoolinganyway.com. To everyone who signs up for my newsletter, I'm offering a free report filled with great tips for having a successful homeschool day.
