Homeschooling Anyway

• Saturday, December 29, 2007 - The Times, They Are a-Changin'

On Christmas Eve, one of my sisters-in-law was telling me how terrible it is that she still hasn't put her now-grown sons' pictures into albums. I had to laugh, because I would love to have that problem. I told her that most of the pictures I've taken over the last few years are still on my computer, sitting ducks to be wiped out by a malicious virus. I would be perfectly happy if they were printed out and "safe" in some of those photo storage boxes. How time flies...and how things change.

I'll make myself get them uploaded, at the very least, to my favorite online photo storage site: Snapfish.comI've used Snapfish for 5 or 6 years now and am very happy with their service. The cool thing about Snapfish is that they give you unlimited photo storage, and will also print out and mail your pictures to you at a very good rate. (It used to be 12 cents per print, but they have just dropped it to 9 cents.) Or, and I love this, you can choose to have them printed out at a Walgreen's near you. I did that this year with our Christmas photo cards.

Now's a great time to be a new Snapfish.com customer. All new orders will receive 50 free prints if placed by January 3. Lucky you! I got 20 free prints when I signed up way back when, but 50??? Don't pass up this one!

I love snapfish too. I saw the email about 9 cents a print... is that the new all the time price or is it a sale price?

Wow, that might be my answer! My CD burner won't respond. I keep thinking that if I get a virus or something I will be crying because I have four years worth of photos on the drive. Maybe I can choose my favorites and get them to a disk through this company (?). I need some type of back up copy or something. I have also thought of buying one of those memory key things to plug in the computer and download (?). I have no idea how to do this, and I don't know if it is possible. Thanks for the link.

I haven't put pics in the books since I got my digital camera 3 years ago. I've backed them up, however, onto "Big Bertha" our mobile hard drive, and onto CDs. LOL
They're be there when I'm 85 and have nothing better to do than relive old memories.

I'm pretty anal about backing up, printing and organizing my pictures. They go on my hard drive, my external hard drive, on a DVD disc, and onto SHutterfly's website. And I get them printed and since I can't stand to have them laying around, they go directly into photo albums. I have a crazy number of photo albums. LOL! :) But that's me.

Thanks for stopping by my blog! I have the Canon 40D, but that's pretty new to me. Most of the pics on my blog were taken with the Canon 300D- the first of the Digital Rebels. I have an Alien Bee 400- it's an external strobe flash. You can angle & diffuse the light (with a softbox) so it's not so harsh and not straight on. They're pricey but we looked at it as an investment- saving $$ on a "real" photographer! :) I've collected bits of photography equipment over the years.

Hope that helps!
Love, Alyssa

I saw your name on a friends list, and couldn't resist seeing the blog anyone that demands Starbuck's with such fervor. It almost made me want to go out, get a Starbuck's Card and send it to you...

It is very wise of you to want safeguard your photos, I know many of ours are only in one place, on a computer, as well. Perhaps I should look at other options for storage. I hadn't given it much thought.

Nice meeting you!

About Me...

Are you homeschooling ... anyway? Very few of us, if any, escape the tragedies and other disappointments of life. In the summer of 2004, we experienced a tragedy of our own with the death of our pre-born baby. It was a devastating blow, but that year we homeschooled ... anyway. We were blessed with another little one, but were soon face to face with my husband's cancer diagnosis (multiple myeloma) in early 2006. And like we did 3 years ago, we are still homeschooling...anyway. If you need support, encouragement, or just want to know what "a day in the life" is like for another family who chooses to continue homeschooling in spite of difficulties, stick around! I'm glad you're here, and that I can be here, too, to share the ups and downs (even the days when I feel like I'm skidding sideways) of our homeschooling family: Dad, Mom, two teenagers, a preteen, and a toddler. Any typos I will blame on Bethany, who likes to smack the keyboard while I'm holding her and trying to type one-handed. ;-)
