The week of Sept 6 through Sept 12, from a few choice perspectives:

From the Heart:

I appreciate everyone’s support and understanding about our unease at church.  Terry and I have talked about it quite a bit this week, and we’re quite sure we will begin visiting other congregations very soon.  I’m concerned about how my older girls will take it though.  They don’t handle changes very well at all.  When they start to get used to something or someplace, they don’t want to ever end – even if it’s not the best situation.  Also, we just volunteered for some fall activities, and I really hate to commit to something then back out.  I’m wondering if we should give this a few weeks – like to the end of the year – to make this decision.  Besides, we may end up moving by then anyway.  Okay, that’s just wishful thinking, I know.  Regardless, we’ll be praying about this very earnestly.  Thank you for your prayers.

This week, I contacted three homeschool support groups in this area to see if they have very many kids my girls’ ages.  I heard back from 2 of the 3 so far.  The one I was leaning mostly toward is the one I haven’t heard from yet.  Hmmm…  I’ll give them a few more days then make my decision.  See, when I join our large HS group, I have to specify a support group.  This is delaying my registration.

From the Word:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD.  “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” – Isaiah 55:8-9

“Where we have listened to, dwelt on, believed, and acted on lies, we must begin to listen to, meditate on, believe, and act on the Truth.” – Nancy Leigh DeMoss

As Wife/Mom:

Camille did MUCH better this week with her nighttime potty training.  No accidents!  I’m still up at least once a night taking her to the bathroom, and it seems to be doing the trick!

Our family went to the tennis courts on Labor Day.  That was a first.  Sarah and I played one another while Terry tossed balls for Camille to hit.  Rachel watched and chased a ball or two.  It was quite fun.  I love tennis though I’m not very good.  Sarah usually outplays me by miles!  I did okay Monday, and she thinks I should consider joining a league.  I’ve considered it in the past, and may look into it in the spring.  There may be some potential there.

In the Schoolroom:

This week went much more smoothly than last week.  Perhaps, it has something to do with the change of Rachel’s medication.  It was a short week, but we got a lot done.

Rachel is being very challenged with Notgrass American History/English 3.  She’s slowly but surely getting the hang of it.  Right now, she’s studying the American colonies in the 1700s (pre-independence).  Rachel is on her last lesson in Algebra I.  YAY!!!  Next week, we can finally take the final and move on to Geometry.  She’s ready to leave Alg 1 behind too.  Two years is just too long!  Biology  has been a sore spot for her this week because she has another dissection to do.  She’d love to skip them, but I insist that she do them for lab credit.  One down and three to go!

Sarah is studying Ancient Egypt (Joseph and Moses), the skeletal system, and absolute value in algebraic equations.  She’s still working through the study guild while reading Carry On, Mr. Bowditch, and is LOVING the story!  She’s also gotten hooked on the “Missing Persons” series of books.  Right now, she’s reading The Chocolate Lover.  Next week, we will begin a historical fiction book titled Mara, Daughter of the Nile as a readaloud.  This will wrap up our brief study of Ancient Egypt before spending the rest of the year on Ancient Greece.  Sarah is still finishing school in less than three hours.  I’m still not sure how I feel about that.

Camille is doing well.  She’s studying shape and color patterns and writing and sounding the lower case letters f, b, m, and k.  This week, we read repeatedly Snow Bears, Rabbits and Rainbows, and Princess Me (which is an adorable book that fits her to a tee).

Around the House

Terry is on new home improvement projects.  This time, he’s tiling the shower and water closet in the master bath.  Next, he’ll be changing our kitchen countertops and backsplash.  Should be fun!

Have a blessed week!

Oh, look at Terry, with his bad self! Is work giving him more of a break now?

I saw last week that we were at a similar place with church issues and youth. I think, ironically enough, everyone is trying to respond to the data that shows that kids leave the church somewhere between 13 and 18, never to return. We just have very different ways of giving attention to the problem.

I'll write more later. People are in line for this computer. God bless!

I like how you write individual reports on your kiddos. That is neat. I understand about the not wanting to change if the case may be that you are possibly moving in a few months (fingers crossed) and the kids will probably resist. I hope the decision becomes clear soon.

On changing churches: We had to make that decision and it was the best decision ever! My husband had been at that church for 35 years and I, for 13 years. But the congregation was legalistic and unloving, and I reached the point where I needed to leave because it was effecting my relationship with the Lord. I was becoming bitter at the people.
We visited one church that didn't work, then the next week visited one we were familiar with, and we've been there ever since - 6 years now.
BUT - about the youth. I know what you mean about the youth. Now, I'm not one of these that believes in keeping the kids with us and not letting them be involved in the youth. My 16 year old son got involved and grew into a great leader. I think it depends on their individual personalities. There are kids who are leaders and there are followers. However, I agree that there is too much entertainment and catering to the worldly kids, under the idea that they will stay and hear the Word. I'm not sure it's working! My biggest complaint about the Youth is that the ps kids are so unruly that the serious kids can't get anything out of the message, due to them talking and being disruptive. I think they act like that in school and then bring it to the church. I've seen this in my younger son's class as well. Because it's church, the leaders don't want to offend. I say this is not holding them accountable and just further, teaching them to disrespect authority. But, we could go on and on.
One word of caution about changing just for the youth: I don't know if you'll find that perfect fit at any church. I think there will be better and worse groups. I think you have to check out the leaders. If the youth leader is strong - you'll find a good group. If he's more interested in entertaining and catering to the kids - I think you'll find unruly kids.

Have a great weekend!
