Sarcasm

Posted in Christopher
Oh what fun it is to teach a 5 year old the ins and outs of sarcasm.  NOT.

"Christopher, is your bed made?"

"n - o.  That spells no."

"Do you think maybe it's rude to spell answers at your mommy?"

"y-e-s.  Daddy says my mouth is soooo smarth these days! That's because I can spell!"

"Christopher, daddy doesn't mean your mouth is intelligent.  He means that you're being rude."

"Then why did he say it was smart?"

"It's called sarcasm."

"What's scarcasim?"

"Not scarcasim.  Sarcasm.  It's when you say something thinking you are being funny, but you're really making fun of the person you are talking about."

"Daddy is making fun of me?"  (confused look here)

"No, but when daddy says you have a smart mouth it means that you sound smart (because you are spelling) but you're really being rude."

"Oh.  Well, that's just s-i-l-l-y."

"I suppose to you it is.  We'll have this conversation again later I'm sure.  Give me a hug."

All I needed to learn I didn't learn in ....

Posted in Christopher

All I needed to learn I didn't learn in .... Kindergarten!  Man!  I am constantly amazed at what Christopher is learning in a K curriculum.  I know we're using LA1 and Math1, but the rest is K.  Did they seriously teach all this when I was in school??  I don't remember learning this type of stuff until middle elementary ages.  Yikes!!!  I'm so grateful that DH is okay with us taking things slow and catering a little bit to Christopher's learning style (which is all over the place! LOL).  There are days I wonder how in the world other kids like him function in a public school environment.  Today we were able to get back more to our schedule after the crisis in the family a couple of weeks ago.

We accomplished:
  • handwriting
  • spelling words
  • 2 lessons in math
  • language arts worksheet
  • C reading to me
  • finished reading "The Apple and the Arrow
AND we are taking a break from TV for today.  The kids have only asked once to watch a movie, so I'm hoping they can hold off for the rest of the day and we can survive without it.  This time of day is usually when they want to watch the most.  We haven't had cable in almost 4 years, but videos and PBS make it so easy to just sit and get much of nothing accomplished.

The Amazing Mind of a Boy

Posted in Christopher

Just what is it about the way a boy's mind works?  I am constantly fascinated with the things he comes up with!  Simple things like building a block tower becomes an amazing chance to conquer the universe with the biggest and best built robot building ever!  Mommy can't just fix lunch (today it was bologna and cheese sandwiches), it turns into mommy is in the space kitchen defeating the hunger monster with her butter sword (not just a butter knife) and slaying that horrible creature with mayonaise.  All the while his sister just sits and trys to play along, but no matter how creative she is...it just isn't enough to keep up with his imagination!

I'm finding it just as exciting to read stories to him these days.  Nothing the author writes is anywhere near as good as the plot line he tries to take us down.  Today he even asked me to close the book and just let him tell the story.  I did and he had all of sitting on the edge of seat waiting to see what happened next!  The 21 month old was even clapping when he took his final bow and proclaimed "THE END!"  I'm sure when I start to read the story again (as it is written) he'll protest and try to invent yet another plot twist!!

Legos are no longer to build towers and airplanes with.  Until recently those were his two most favorite things to built.  Now, thanks to some movie input from daddy, Legos are for making lightsabers.  Today we had a 4-way light saber battle that ended with all of laughing until we cried!

Praise God for all the wonderful differences between us all and for the neverending imagination of a little red headed boy...
