Un-Reconstructed American Patriot

February 25, 2007 - Marine Recruiter Shows Ignorance

Saturday, while I was talking to a Marine Recruiter, he stated that "the Marines are the oldest branch of the military, even older than the Constitution" (emphasis his), implying that the Marines are not necessarily under the authority of the Constitution.  He obviously has not thought this through. How can the United States Marine Corp (USMC) be older than the Constitution of the United States? There was no United States before the Constitution of 1787 was ratified by nine states. How then could the United States, which did not exist at that time, have a Marine Corp? There may have been marines, small m, in America prior to the ratification of the Constitution of the United States of America but there could not have been a USMC.  Therefore, since the USMC cannot exist outside of the Constitution, they must be under the authority of it.

The Continental Congress authorized the formation of two Marine battalions on 10 November, 1775. This was obviously before the ratification of the Constitution and independence of the Colonies. These Marine battalions fought during the Revolution and are the literal ancestors of today's modern United States Marine Corps.

I am aware that there were "Marines" before the ratification of the Constitution. However, just as my "literal ancestor" from England was under the jurisdiction of the King and Parliament and I am under the jurisdiction of the State of Florida, so were the continental marines under the jurisdiction of the Continental Congress and the USMC is under the jurisdiction of the Constitution and the US government.

There has been a United States of America since the Declaration of Independence. Way to show some good ol' ignorance.
