May 7, 2007 - Immigration Reform
Here is an idea for those illegal immigrants who truly want to obtain citizenship while continuing to live and work (illegally) in America and don't want to be deported.
It's called "Please Take A Number."
Each head of household must register with Immigration officials, he will then receive a number representing his/his family's place in the line of people (the end at the time of registration) in his native country that are in the "legal entry" process. Once his/their number comes up, he/they will go through the same process, and will have to meet the same criteria, as any other prospective immigrant. If he/they receive anything less than a "passing grade" he/they will be immediately deported.
However, this isn't a free ride. He/they possibly broke the law to get here, and are definitely breaking the law just by being here. He/they must pay some sort of a fine. Here is my proposal.
Financial penalties would consist of:
- $1000 per month per working adult
- $200 per month per school-age child, ages 6-18
- Ineligibility for Social Security and Welfare
Restrictions and requirements:
- Subject to nighttime curfew
- Subject to random visits by Immigration officials, at least two visits per month
- Required to check in at any Immigration office in the he/they registered in
Things requiring deportation (no ifs, and, or buts):
- Commission of two misdemeanors requires immediate deportation
- Commission of a felony requires immediate deportation after sentence is served
- Possession of any amount of any illegal drug/substance requires immediate deportation
Participation in this program would be completely voluntary, anyone not wishing to paticipate would be deported. Registration must occur within three months of implementation of the the program, all others would be deported.
All money raised by this plan would be used to hire new Border Patrol agents.
Now, does anyone out there think that this would ever be passed by the Congress, or signed by the President (be it Bush or anyone else). Well, it could happen if enough people backed it.
