American Philatelic Society - Stamp Collecting Clubs in Kansas
American Philatelic Society - Stamp Collecting Clubs in Kansas
If you or your kids ever wanted to get into stamp collecting, this is a great place to start. The American Philatelic Society has great resources just for kids or for the young at heart! Here are some of the resources they offer:
- On the Trail with Lewis and Clark -- Join in the adventure of the Corps of Discovery, during the two hundredth anniversary celebration, 2003–2006.
- Beginners Information -- Some great reading materials available for the beginner (with links to some great resources).
- New Arrivals -- See what new stamps are being released.
- Frequently Asked Questions? -- Find the answers to some of the most often asked questions.
- Activity Pages -- Share in STAMP FUN activities available for anyone! These are also a great source for club leaders looking for stamp-related activities.
- Fun Facts -- Discover some unusual, interesting hobby-related facts. For example, did you know that cats delivered mail?
- Other Youth Links -- Check out some other Web sites that we think help promote Stamp Collecting for Kids.
Kids/Youth Stamp Clubs
The APS offers a program entitled "All*Star Stamp" Club. It is a club for youth, run by a local leader, such as you. Each club member would receive a certificate of membership and a wallet card to carry that says they belong to the All*Star Stamp Club. They also receive a card and philatelic souvenir on their birthday, if the leader has parental permission to release the names to the APS Youth Coordinator.
The local club leader receives material at least 3 times a year to help with the club - stamps, covers, stamp mounts, and other material that is donated for the APS youth programs. You also receive an All*Star Leader Letter that contains useful information about using stamps in the classroom and other stamp collecting information. All of this for just $10 per year. (This is a single fee for the club. There is no fee to the APS for each of your individual club members.)
Currently, many of our clubs are homeschool groups. Most clubs like to make their own special name - such as the "Super Stampers" or whatever they like.
(Note: At the writing of this post, there are no kids/youth stamp clubs in Kansas. If you would like to start one, please contact Janet Houser, Education and Program Director.)

Scottish Festival & Highland Games in McPherson, Kansas Sat. & Sun. September 22 - 23, 2007
There is a fun and educational event in McPherson, KS: The McPherson Scottish Festival. Homeschooling families will find many aspects of the festival to be of interest. It's a glimpse into traditions of Scotland and of the Scots who immigrated to the U.S.
There are about 25 tents staffed by representatives of various Scottish clans or families. Many of those people are quite knowledgeable about the history and traditions of Scotland, and many have traveled there.
There's a genealogy tent where people assist attendees in researching their family histories, of any ethnicity. Scottish and Irish music are on-going throughout the day both Saturday and Sunday. One of our featured performers is a renowned American player of the Irish flute. All are accomplished singers and instrumentalists. On Sunday there's a Celtic harp tent, with performances as well as opportunities for a
hands-on session to learn to play the Celtic harp.
The athletics events are special this year, as competitors from around the world will try for World championship titles in Highland athletic events such as the caber toss (Sat.). On Sunday, another group of really big guys (and probably a few capable women as well) will compete is some contemporary Strongman events.
This list goes on...border collies herding sheep, a display of raptors and falcons, Scottish meat pies for lunch. Even a display of Highland cattle!
Masters World Highland Athletic Championship, Saturday, September 22nd
Al Myers, Abilene veterinarian is Athletic Director. Athletes from around the US, plus Canada, Norway and Switzerland are coming to McPherson, Kansas to compete for world records.
Last year's World Championships were in Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. Website showing registered athletes: http://www.scottishmasters.org/mwcwhoscoming.html Six are Kansans. Eleven women are coming. All athletes are age 40+. Three men are age 70+. Nine events are competed.

Summer Reading Programs at a Library Near You
Summer Reading Programs at a Library Near You
In the summertime, there are always fun library reading programs. Last year, my daughter participated in the one at our local library that consisted of reading books, then putting a sticker on a chart that they gave her at the beginning of the program (complete with stickers).
At certain increments she would come to a special spot on the chart that meant she was to bring the chart in and get a prize. She very much enjoyed working her way through the chart and bringing it in to receive her prizes.
The prizes started out small and got more elaborate as she progressed through the chart's path. Her first prize was a sticker; later, one of the prized she received was a 3" stuffed animal and at the end of the chart they gave her an electronic bookmark that would keep track of how much time was spent reading.
It was fun, free, and I thought it was a really great learning experience (besides the books themselves) in her learning to work through something from start to finish.

It is easy to find a local library around you. Just click here to do a search. (The quickest way that I have found is, up above, on the left-hand side where it says, "I'm looking for a...", click the "Library" button, type in the name of your town and click "go."
It will bring up a list of all of the libraries (that are listed in the directory - that is) both public and private.
Hope this helps! Happy reading!
Denise
