Holly and Her Earring
Some children in this world tend to find themselves in unique situations. They seem to be more than accident prone. Things happen and later we shake our heads and say, “It could only happen to you.” We are blessed with such a child. When she was only two she decided to climb up my parents’ entertainment center to put a video in by herself. The huge television set came crashing down and somehow managed to only slightly bruise her leg.
Yesterday we had another unusual predicament. We had not been home for twelve hours yet. Holly had just finished breakfast and she told me to look at her ear because there was “something gross” there. She just had her ears pierced two months ago and was thrilled to finally wear something besides the plain gold balls. When I looked, I saw blood. So we went to my room for better light. I could not see the earring back, just a bit of the post sticking out. At first, I assumed she lost the back in her sleep. I tried to gently take the earring out but it would not budge and she cried out in pain. Well, that was not normal. I had her lie down on my bed for a better view. Then I told her that I was going to get Daddy to look at it. She really started crying then. John is our in-home EMT and he handles everything that requires more than a simple band aid. John
examined her ear and confirmed my suspicions that somehow the earring
back had been pulled through and was inside her earlobe. Now what do we do? John thought for a moment, left the room and came back with some tools, orthodontic tools. Gabe’s orthodontist loaned John the tools necessary to complete the next six months worth of work on his teeth. One tool, a specialized pair of wire cutters, was perfect for the task. It was made to cut wire on one side while protecting the skin on the other side. John
was able to cut the post off the earring on the front side of the lobe
and then with another special small needle nose type pliers reached
inside the hole in her lobe, find the post and pull the back and post
out.
We debated for several minutes about which earrings to put in her ears, if any. The
three of us considered the possibility of just letting her ears heal up
and waiting four more years to get them pierced again. Amazingly, Holly was all for that idea. In the end, John decided that it would be best to use her plain gold balls that she had them pierced with originally. I am cleaning her ear and turning the earring three times a day and watching carefully for any sign of infection. So far, everything looks good.
The question is, how did this happen? While John was looking at her ear she told us that she kept pushing the back up against the lobe. In our final days of packing I had not noticed. The earring had a tiny, sharp edged back on it. Those two things did not help the situation. Later
last night I was thinking about the ordeal and I remembered that while
we were on the airplane, Holly complained about her ears popping. She pulled on her lobes frequently and I never thought a thing about her earrings. I believe that was the main cause of our newest incident.
Pray for us as we are here in a country where 911 is non-existent and medical conditions in general are alarming. Pray specifically for her ear to heal completely without any infection.

Ohhh, poor little thing! Thankfully, God had already provided just what you needed through the orthodontist! He is so good, isn't He?
You continue to be in our prayers.

What an ordeal. Who knew that getting your ears pierced could lead to such drama. Oh the poor thing. She sounds like she's such a tropper though. As they say in the south ' bless her heart'. What a sweety.
Oh the price we women will pay for a little beauty ;-).
Praying for quick healing.

Tell Holly that I have the "Lost" Butterfly Earring that she can use when we figure out how to get it to her. Tease her a bit for me, Tell her my suggestion is to use increasingly larger wooden or silver discs in the hole which is a sign of great beauty in some cultures and see what she thinks about that. You can find one at http://www.modins.net/myanmarinfo/NationEthnic/#thet
I can hear her now "Oh Pappa, you know the hole is not that big."
Trusting God to heal her well. Have a great day!
Love,
Dad

June 11, 2006 - I have one like that

He and Holly were firecrackers together. It is funny - as I type this - I am sitting at my same table that we played cards at when you visited - it's just in Texas now instead of WV.
I hope Holly's ear heals up fine - have also had one that had that happen. Tell Holly that Kendra had another child yank her earring out - and it left her earlobe torn like an upsidedown letter V. She had to have surgery later to repair it. We'll definitely be praying for her ear to heal well. You must see a lot of interesting medical things in Romania!

Oh, Karen, I have one of those children too. I just cannot imagine dealing with his little accidents with less than stellar medical care just down the road if need be. Yikes! Glad that she seems to be ok, and glad that y'all made it safely.

I had something like that happen to me when I was 9 except the back of my earing didn't go inside my ear lobe. *cring* Mine was caused from an allergy and my mom had to take me to the Dr. to have the earing taken out because the pus and blood covered the back of the earing. My ear drained pus for three days. (Nasty). A few years later I tried peircing my ears again.. same thing happened. I gave up. lol
I pray that your dd heals fine and no infection!
Hugs,
Di

Wow, poor little pumpkin! Thus far, my kids all seem to be somewhat like me, in that they're very clutzy! I think I'll avoid earrings for them for awhile :-) Glad you made it safely home, and looking forward to hearing more about your life in Romania! Thanks for the welcome comment on my blog. Take care, and God bless!

June 12, 2006 - earring in ear

when I was about 8 years old the same thing happened to me.
My parents took me to the emergency room and they soaked my ears in warm soapy water and took tweezers/plier things and pulled them out of my ears on the count of 3.
I was ok but I let mine grow up. I had them re-pierced a few years later.
But with a little TLC she will probably be fine.

September 18, 2006 - My daughter had the same thing, did it heal ok?

Hello,
I just found this post on the web, as my wife and I were frantic when we found the back of our daughters earing embeded in her ear. We have cleaned it out and have put another earing in with a much bigger back to protect from this happening again. Is this the smartest thing to do or should we just take the earing out and let them close. She is only 5 so we are concerned that if we take them out the pain of the whole thing will cause her to fear ever doing it again.

Now that is weird! I'm so glad you got it out. I feel bad for holly.
That had to hert! And no 911, that bites!
But I'm glad you got through it. And I hope there is no infection.

February 13, 2008 - Infected earlobe with back of earring stuck inside earlobe!
Posted by Jessica's Mom
My daughter woke up with her earlobe infected, swollen and the back of the earring was underneath the skin and she was in a lot of pain with pus and blood oozing. I was able to finally get the earring out with relatively little pain and no trip to the doctors. Here's how I did it....First I lubricated the back of the earlobe with Neosporin...then I VERY GENTLY put my finger over the back hole and gingerly moved the front of the earring back and forth until part of the earring-back peeked out. Then I took a needle and thread and threaded the part of the earring back that was sticking out (the needle did not touch my daughter's ear)...then I held onto the front of the earring and gently pulled on the thread and the back of the earring easily popped off. There was no need for tweezers...breaking of the earring, etc. I urge you to give this method a try...my daughter is very sensitive to pain.,..and instead of tears, I got a smile and a big hug!!

September 29, 2008 - Back of ear ring embeded in the ear lobes
Posted by Vu
Last night I decided to check on my daughter's ears & had a big shock! The back of the earring was embeded in her ear lobe. I check the other ear & had another shock! The same thing! I was frantic, calling my friend (the person who did the piercing a few months back) & he suggested going to a doctor to remove it surgically.
I couldn't decide what to do so I tried searching the net & I found your site & after reading the posting, felt relieved & got an idea what to do.
Here's what I did :-
I applied some clove oil on her ears (to numb the earlobes)
Then I removed the posts by holding to her earlobe & slowly pulling out the front of the ear ring.
Next, I took an acupuncture needle, bend the front slightly to form a small hook. Then I gently pressed the front of her earlobe so that the back of the ear ring become visible & gently passed the acupuncture needle thru the hole of the earing. Then while gently pressing the front of the ear lobe, I slowly pulled out the back portion of the ear ring using the acupuncture needle.
Then I used some surgical spirit to rub her ear lobes to disinfect them & now she is off to school.
