SCRIPTURES

"But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Do not let your heart be troubled, nor let it be fearful." ~ John 14:26-27 (NASB)

Aug. 25, 2008 - WHOLESOME MOVIES TO WATCH WITH YOUR FAMILY

I am posting this list of recommended movies so I can keep record of them myself. This was sent to me from Nancy Campbell on May 27th since I am an avid reader of "Above Rubies." To find more information please visit her website.

Enjoy!!

*******************************************

Disclaimer:

The following movie recommendations have been emailed to me from our Above Rubies subscribers. I rarely have time to watch movies and do not have time to check all the following movies. Therefore, I cannot claim that they will be absolutely according to your standards. There may be many that you may not want to watch. However, I am sure that most of them would be the best that are available.

It will still be your responsibility to check each individual movie. If you are unsure about any movie, check out more information from the following websites before renting or purchasing.

You may like to print off this list for quick referral.

Sources to find good movies:
The following are websites that our readers have recommended to check out the decency of movies you may be interested in watching.

http://christiananswers.net/spotlight/movies
You can click on "excellent" or "good" and a list in alphabetical order will appear. You can then click on any title and see the review and get information on the movie. Hit the back arrow at the top left of the screen to return to the list. This website gives full details and moral rating on everything from what is out at the theater to movie rentals.

www.pluggedinonline.com/movies/ 'Shining a Light on the World of Popular Entertainment'. A Christian source that evaluates movies based on several elements. The author generally gives his take on whether or not the movie is "family friendly".

One reader mentions SKY ANGEL, a Christian satellite service which is much better than cable or other satellite services (and cheaper -$14.99/mo.). It shows all the Creation Science programming! You can get more information at www.skyangel.com

You can purchase a censoring device at Target (called "Clear Play". The link is:http://www.clearplay.com/ ; You then pay a small subscription fee to "clean up" any questionable movies. Another lady writes about ClearPlay. "You can research it on the internet, it's a DVD player, now available at Target for $50.  It uses specialized software and movie specific filters to remove objectionable material from pre-selected movies. The filter is unlike anything you've seen before and removes the material in an almost seamless fashion.  As with all things, this is no substitute for attentive parenting and doesn't necessarily make all the filtered movies acceptable, but it is a beneficial option for our family.  It is not funded by any type of Christian organization, it's simply a family friendly alternative to the excessive language, violence, etc in modern movies."

Recommended Movies:
To find the following movies, do an Internet search for the title. Many can also be rented from your local library.

I will put an asterisk beside the movies that were recommended most frequently. I will also include comments from readers when they gave them. The only comments I have made throughout the list are in italics.

Nearly every person who emailed recommended the following four DVDs. They were the most popular recommendations.

Amazing Grace *
The true story of William Wilberforce and his fight to end the slave trade in the late 1700s in England. John Newton, who wrote the hymn "Amazing Grace,"  was a friend of his and together they worked to have the laws changed. There is some cleavage which I really wish they didn't put in there; we black those parts out and just listen to the words. There is a book which prompted the writing of the movie, The Wilberforce Connection. I would highly recommend the book and also the autobiography of John Newton.

Facing the Giants *

Fly Wheel *

Time Changer *
The year is 1890 and Bible professor Russell Carlisle has written a new manuscript entitled "The Changing Times." His book is about to receive a unanimous endorsement from the board members of the Grace Bible Seminary until his colleague Dr. Norris Anderson raises an objection. Dr. Anderson believes that what Carlisle has written could greatly affect the future of coming generations. Using a secret time machine, Anderson sends Carlisle over 100 years into the future, offering him a glimpse of where his beliefs will lead. www.TimeChangerMovie.com

The love story is so deep and meaningful. Albert (Victoria's first cousin) really marries her more of duty than anything. Quiet Man, The * (with John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara.)  One of John Wayne's non-Western movies).  It takes place in Ireland in the 1930's and deals with his courtship of Maureen O'Hara's character and the cultural differences between Ireland and America. (The courtship is in the tradition of being chaperoned by the matchmaker and having familial permission before a relationship can be established). It was a good vehicle for family discussions about what behaviour is acceptable and what we expect from our children and why.

Rabbit Proof Fence
Racing Stripes
Radio * PG for language, 2003 movie. (An inspiring story but it has a lot of 70's mild rock music in the background. The message of the movie is very positive--a football coach helps a disabled black man.)

Walton, The series * (can be purchased at Wal-Mart or rented from most libraries)
Way of the Master DVD series for teens. These are hosted by Ray Comfort and Kirk Cameron and are thought-provoking but also humorous and engaging at the same time. A reader writes, "Each episode teaches ways to use the Ten Commandments to bring the sinner knowledge of his standing before God as a sinner and also shows a one-on-one witnessing encounter. We watch an episode every Friday as a family and we can't wait to see the next. The Lord is using it to give us a love for the lost!  I believe there are two seasons out on DVD with 15-17 episodes each and Season 3 will be out very soon. Visit www.wayofthemaster.com

Jul. 31, 2008 - Take the Pharisee Test

I was online searching a couple of books that we will be reading this year. I came across one that really caught my eye. As I was “searching” inside, you know, reading what I could online to confirm if the book is for us.

Well low and behold, I found a Pharisee Test!!!

Click on the link below (pdf file)

Go to page 10 – 12, and print it out.

http://www.cwgministries.org/books/sample/49Lies-Lie1.pdf

Take it on yourself, not your neighbor, spouse or pastor. One of the traits of phariseeism is that they are always pointing out others’ faults rather than examining their own hearts. Another reason you would not want to tell someone they are a pharisee is because pharisees carry the spirit of murder with them. As they sought to kill Jesus, so they will seek to kill you. So unless you have a death wish, I recommend you not call a person a pharisee.

As I went through the test… I was like, that use to be me…. Praise God, it’s not now!! Before I was delivered, I could say I was a Pharisee. By God’s grace, nothing of me, I am still free today. I thanked Jesus after reading through this test. I thanked Him for setting me free from the falsehoods that I believed in.

After taking the test, I looked up the Scripture that went with the questions. I had to do some repenting, but praise God I have a loving Father who sets me FREE!!!!

Jul. 28, 2008 - FREE Christian Magazines, worth having!!!

I want to share with you three magazines that my family and I ENJOY!!

These magazines are put on the dashboard of my SUV, and whenever we are our running around and stop to get something to eat.... guess what? We visit places where it is usually very quiet with no music in the background such as Arby's, KFC, Chick-faLa, Subway, Denny's, mom -n-pop diners, etc.

You see, my family consist of my daughter and I and that is it... unless you count our dog and cat. LOL. We spend ALL day together do things, and our evenings are usually spent in Church. So, in my family we do spend alot of time together.... working, cleaning, learning, etc. It is a treat for us to be able to go out to eat and sit and read articles (edifiying and those that challenge our walk).

With the articles, we always get into the underlining message. Then we talk about applying the message to our lives, and how if we chose to apply the message to our lives, will it change. The idea that I am trying to instill in my daughter is the applicable message that she can imply in her life.

The Voice of the Martyrs

This is an EXCLLENT resource! I love it. My daughter and I read the articles together and then pray for the situation, village, people, etc… This also opens the door to talk with her about the choice that one day she might have to make… what choice would it be?

http://etools.780net.com/a/jgroup/bg_VOMPP_CBD_233.html?p=1140416

I do believe we need to be aware of the persecutions that are happening in the world today. I believe it is important for the children to understand what others go through for their Lord, and have them examine in their own mind and heart, what will they do …

It is very easy to say “I choose Christ”, but can you REALLY say “I choose Christ” if you get in a situation like the girl in Columbine?

Jun. 13, 2008 - STORING UP TREASURE - by Nancy Campbell

STORING UP TREASURE

1 Timothy 6:19, "Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life."

The above Scripture encourages us to lay up in store for the time to come. In the context, it is actually speaking to those who have riches in this world, exhorting them to be rich in good works and generous to the needy. But I do believe this message is for all of us. I think it is one of the greatest exhortations we can have, don't you?

Every moment of our lives we should be "laying up in store" for the eternal kingdom. We cannot take any material possessions out of this world. It is all vanity. 1 Timothy 6:7 says, "For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out." We will only take what we lay up in heaven.

We need to remind ourselves again of Matthew 6:19-21, "Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: for where your treasure is, there will you heart be also."

I have always been challenged by the statement,

"Life is a dressing room for eternity."

Everything we do and say, either builds for this world, or for the eternal world.

I think we will have a lot of surprises in heaven. I remember reading about a man of God who had a vision of the eternal realm. He said that he saw that the people who were closest to the throne of God were mothers and intercessors. Our liberal society does not have time for these ministries. Even the Christian world does not always affirm them. They don't receive the limelight. But they are powerful in God's eyes.

Dear mother, I want to remind you that as you sacrificially pour out your life for your children, as you mother and nurture them in the ways of God, as you pour out your heart in prayer for them--you are laying up treasure for eternity! Your mothering is never wasted. It builds for eternity. You are preparing your children for the heavenly realm. And you lay up heavenly treasure for yourself as you do it.

You may feel inferior because you think you are wasting your education as you lay down your career for motherhood. You may feel sorry for yourself because you are not making money like your neighbor who is choosing her career over motherhood. You may feel insecure because you don't feel that you are accomplishing great things in your home.

Don't listen to these deceptions and negatives. As you mother your children in your home, you are in the perfect will of God. You are building for eternity. You are laying up store for the time to come.

You are building a big mansion for yourself up there! This is certainly not a waste of time!

Love from NANCY CAMPBELL

PRAYER:

"Lord, please help me to put value on the eternal things, on the things that you put value on. Help me to remember each day that motherhood is building for eternity."

AFFIRMATION:

I have given up hoarding for this world: I am hoarding up treasure for the heavenly kingdom.

Many women like to save these devotions. They print them out and keep them in a folder to read over and over again. Some print them out and pin them on the fridge with a magnet to read through the week. If you are printing this devotion and need it to be smaller, highlight and change to a smaller font.

Jun. 3, 2008 - Bible in the Public Schools?

"The Bible is a book worth more than all the other books that were ever printed." Patrick Henry
"It is impossible to enslave mentally or socially a Bible reading people. The principles of the Bible are the groundwork of human freedom."  Horace Greely
"I have always said, and will always say, that studious perusal of the sacred volume will make us better citizens." Thomas Jefferson

While President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson was elected the first president of the Washington, D.C. public school board, which used the Bible as a reading text in the classroom.

There was a secular study done by the American Political Science Review on thepolitical documents of the Founding era, which was 1760-1805.

This study found that 94% of the documents that went into the Founding ERA were based on the Bible, and of that 34% of the contents were direct quotations from the Bible.

88% of students nationwide are educated in the public school system.

Click link below to watch Church Norris and his wife advocating the Bible in the Public schools:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1pnFg0Sp2Xw

So, what's stopping you from being the instrument for implementing biblical education in your community?

If you doubt you can do it, just recall my favorite words from D.L. Moody: ''I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And that which I can do, by the grace of God, I will do."

May. 21, 2008 - The invisible Mom

A friend sent this me and it touched my heart... and I wanted to share with my friends as well. Please enjoy and be blessed!!

*******************************************************************************
It all began to make sense, the blank stares, the lack of response, the way one of the kids will walk into the room while I'm on the phone and ask to be taken to the store.  Inside I'm thinking "Can't you see I'm on the phone?"  Obviously not.  No one can see if I'm on the phone, or cooking, or sweeping the floor or even standing on my head in the corner because no one can see me at all.  I'm invisible.  The invisible Mom.

Some days I am only a pair of hands, nothing more:  Can you fix this?  Can you tie this?  Can you open this?

Some days I'm not a pair of hands, I'm not even a human being, I'm a clock to ask, "What time is it?"  I'm a satellite guide to answer, "What number is the Disney channel?"  I'm a car to order, "Right around
5:30, please."

I was certain that these were the hands that once held books and the eyes that studied history and the mind that graduated summa cum laude -- but now they had disappeared into the peanut butter, never to be seen again.  She's going, she's going, she's gone!

One night, a group of us were having dinner, celebrating the return of a friend from
England.  Janice had just gotten back from a fabulous trip, and she was going on and on about the hotel she stayed in.  I was sitting there, looking around at the others all put together so well.  It was hard not to compare and feel sorry for myself as I looked down at my out-of-style dress; it was the only thing I could find that was clean.  My unwashed hair was pulled up in a hair clip and I was afraid I could actually smell peanut butter in it.  I was feeling pretty pathetic, when Janice turned to me with a beautifully wrapped package, and said, "I brought you this."  It was a book on the great cathedrals of Europe.  I wasn't exactly sure why she'd given it to me until I read her inscription:  "To Charlotte, with admiration for the greatness of what you are building when no one sees."

In the days ahead I would read -- no devour -- the book.  And I would discover what would become for me, four life-changing truths, after which I could pattern my work:  No one can say who built the great cathedrals -- we have no record of their names.  These builders gave their whole lives for a work they would never see finished.  They made great sacrifices and expected no credit.  The passion of their building was fueled by their faith that the eyes of God saw everything.

A legendary story in the book told of a rich man who came to visit the cathedral while it was being built, and he saw a workman carving a tiny bird on the inside of a beam.  He was puzzled and asked the man, "Why are you spending so much time carving that bird into a beam that will be covered by the roof?  No one will ever see it."  The workman replied, "Because God sees."

I closed the book, feeling the missing piece fall into place.  It was almost as if I heard God whispering to me, "I see you, Charlotte.  I see the sacrifices you make every day, even when no one around you does.  No act of kindness you've done, no sequin you've sewn on, no cupcake you've baked, is too small for me to notice and smile over.  You are building a great cathedral, but you can't see right now what it will become."

At times, my invisibility feels like an affliction, but it is not a disease that is erasing my life, it is the cure for the disease of my own self-centeredness.  It is the antidote to my strong, stubborn pride.  I keep the right perspective when I see myself as a great builder.  As one of the people who show up at a job that they will never see finished, to work on something that their name will never be on.  The writer of the book went so far as to say that no cathedrals could ever be built in our lifetime because there are so few people willing to sacrifice to that degree.

When I really think about it, I don't want my son to tell the friend he's bringing home from college for Thanksgiving, "My mom gets up at 4 in the morning and bakes homemade pies, and then she hand bastes a turkey for three hours and presses all the linens for the table."  That would mean I'd built a shrine or a monument to myself.  I just want him to want to come home.  Then, if there is anything more to say to his friend, I'd like him to add, "You're gonna love it there."

As mothers, we are building great cathedrals.  We cannot be seen if we're doing it right.  One day, it is very possible that the world will marvel, not only at what we built, but at the beauty that has been added to the world by the sacrifices of invisible women.

Great job, MOM!

E is for:
Eat wisely, exercise regularly. My body is the temple of the Holy Ghost.

For the director of music. A song. A psalm.

2 Sing the glory of his name; make his praise glorious!
3 Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power        that your enemies cringe before you.
4 All the earth bows down to you; they sing praise to you, they sing praise to your name.
5 Come and see what God has done, how awesome his works in man's behalf!
6 He turned the sea into dry land, they passed through the waters on foot—    come, let us rejoice in him.
7 He rules forever by his power, his eyes watch the nations— let not the rebellious rise up against him.
 8 Praise our God, O peoples, let the sound of his praise be heard;
9 he has preserved our lives and kept our feet from slipping.
10 For you, O God, tested us; you refined us like silver.
11 You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs.
12 You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance.
13 I will come to your temple with burnt offerings and fulfill my vows to you- 14 vows my lips promised and my mouth spoke when I was in trouble.
15 I will sacrifice fat animals to you and an offering of rams; I will offer bulls and goats.
16 Come and listen, all you who fear God; let me tell you what he has done for me.
17 I cried out to him with my mouth; his praise was on my tongue.
 18 If I had cherished sin in my heart, the Lord would not have listened;
19 but God has surely listened and heard my voice in prayer.
20 Praise be to God,  who has not rejected my prayer or withheld his love from me!

N is for:
Never spend time or effort trying to even the score.
But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
