Frogs are the latest obsession.  It has been a bone of contention around here for me because if one of the twins catches a frog, the other twin cries and cries.  My twin boys with autism are 11.  They function cognitively at about a five year old level.  This was a real issue for me and really getting on my last nerve when I realzed something:

THEY ARE TOUCHING FROGS!!!

These are the little boys that couldn't even touch a wash cloth before -- and now they are touching toads and frogs!  Not only touching them but catching them!

This didn't happen spontaneously.  At our cottage school, other little boys and girls are very into finding frogs and toads right now.  And since my little boys are great imitators, they want to touch and find frogs, too!

I am learning right with them about all the different kinds of frogs there are!  It's really amazing!  So far we have found the common toad, and a green frog and a wood frog.

Toads, frogs, slugs, crickets -- they are all a part of the collection of critters the boys are enjoying.

Isaiah still doesn't like it when the frog jumps or the crickets jump.  He won't personally catch them, but he will touch them.

Isaac is doing everything with them on his own!

I think it will be a sad day for them when all the critters go underground for the winter.  But it won't be long until they move onto something else to obsess about!  Ribbit!

Nov. 5, 2006 - "Enthusiasms"

I prefer the euphemism "enthusiasms" as coined by Clara Claiborne Parks about her daughter Jessie in "Exiting Nirvana."

Your story reminds me of the time we grew meal bugs in our house for a science project. We grew quite attached to them and were sad when some died.

My 17-yo daughter's current crop of enthusiasms include: (1) Mother Goose Video Treasury, (2) The Hoober-Bloob Highway, (3) Mario and Luigi Superstar Saga, and (4) Highways and Cities in our state. Today she asked, "How do we go to the North Pole?" Fortunately, she was satisfied with "I-95, and then take a boat."

I squeeze as much mileage out of her enthusiasms as I possibly can by using them as fodder for speech therapy! She doesn't mind the repetition when the topic is one of her enthusiasms!

Yes! We call them "fascinations" as well as "enthusiasms." Our fascination/enthusiasm this week is just the dogs - which it always is. They fight over the poor old dachshund. I told them when they are 13 they can each have their own dog. Soon I will have more dogs than kids! But the dogs have been great therapy for them. Thanks so much for posting such a delightful comment!
