Classical Education

I've been studing a classical education.  Simply because I find Abeka not to be working for one of my children.  I am impressed with what I see.  I love the idea of a timeline, I just have to figure out a wall that's long enough.

The general consensus is that children don't need to have structure in their classroom until the age of 10, for their brain is not ready for that.

That makes so much sense to me, because my girls literally live in a fantasy world for most of their day, and it is very difficult to bring them into the real world to teach.

I'm beginning to read Beatrix Potter chapter books to them.  And I'm going to start my timeline at Creation, and go from there.

Would love to talk to someone about classical education that knows more than me, that would mean anyone whose been doing it for longer than a week!

Mar. 24, 2006 - Beautiful Children

Posted by KAlexaLott
Your children are truly beautiful! I really enjoyed looking at your pictures and reading through your posts.

I don't know if you are familiar with Ambleside Online, you can visit it here at http://www.ambleside.org, hopefully that will link or you can copy and paste it into your browser, there's also a link to it in my side bar on my blog over at In Beauty and In Grace.

I have been using this curriculum with my girls this year, they are 6 and 12 an so on a public school level in 1st and 6th grade, although I don't think my 12 year old is really on that level, especially in math. My 6 year has always been home schooled, but we just took our 12 year old out this year.

Anyway, you might want to give it a look. It's more Charlotte Mason in it's approach, but a LOT of people use it as a base and follow a more Classical approach. There are also several Yahoo groups you can join that will have different examples of time lines, some on walls, some in notebooks. We personally have not done a time line this year but I want to incorporate this into our studies.

Warmly,
Kim
