Homebound Missions

• Oct. 30, 2008 - Another Idea for Giving

It appears that I have a bias for donating to orphanages.  At least I seem to talk about it a lot.  The truth is that you can teach what you know and giving to orphanages is a place of comfort for me.  From the very beginning it has been a part of my missions work.

So don't be suprised that this idea is a perfect missions project for raising donations for an orphanage.  Let me get right to it, Hold a Baby Shower!

This is such a fun idea and so easy to put together.  And the neat thing is, people do not need to bring brand new gifts, they just need to bring gifts that are in good condition.  It is a great opportunity for adults and children as both may need to release items that could have great value to an orphanage.

Let's get started.

First, you need to plan the time and date.  Create an invitation that you can hand deliver and/or mail out.

Second plan the refreshments.  You may even ask everyone to bring something.

Next, would you like to play a game or give a little information segment about the orphanage or cause you are wanting to donate to?  Coloring handouts can be found on the internet, along with game ideas.  Photos can also be a useful tool.  Pass on your heart for the cause you are supporting to the people you have invited.

Have lots of fun and fellowship!  Open your gifts together and celebrte this great opportunity to give to others.

Prepare your items for shipping to the organization you have chosen.  Ship.

Although I have presented this idea as a missions project for orphanges it can easily be used for so many other charities.  Dog or cat shelters, homeless shelters, battered women's shelters, or any other need that you come across.  What about a shower for a family burned out of their home?  A food shower for the church food pantry?  As you can see there is no limit to the ways you can use this idea.

Currency Tip:Children today have so much stuff.  Teach them while they are young to release.  When they no longer use a toy or item show them how to pass it on to someone else.  Be creative and make it fun.  Maybe even get your friends and their children involved.  The Spring or Fall may be a perfect time to pick a recpient and to have a Neigborhood Shower, for the purpose of releasing and giving.  It can be all about the children giving and learning how rewarding it is.

     Matthew 18:4 NKJV

4  Therefore whoever humbles himself as this little child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.

This may sound a bit odd, but how do you go about finding a mission that takes actual items, and not money? I once wanted to help a mission in Mexico but they said it was better to send money because they could buy what they truly needed. There was no mention of the actual needs either. I've heard of others that say it's just cheaper if you send them money for their needs instead of the items. I suspect this is due to all of those people who donated their trash for Jesus! That might make a great post for you, a list of missions you already know about and how to find others.

You have totally inspired me and I can't wait to get started!
