The Heartline Haiti Birth Center is preparing for opening day. All hopes are that babies can start being born there late Fall.
In Haiti, women cannot get medical care unless they can afford to pay. Many are malnurished, destitute poor without any means for healthcare, so they forgo medical care often giving birth alone at home.
Soon, pregnant women will have a friend in childbirth. Heartline is already providing prenatal care, nutrition, vitamins, and lab work, but soon women will be able to come to the birthcenter to give birth surrounded by people who will care for them with gentleness and exceptional midwifery care.
In a recent article,A Painful Birth For Free Medical Assistance in Haiti, by Jordi Zamora (AFP), Zamora states that female mortality in Haiti is 130 women per 100,000 births. Dying needlessly in childbirth is simply unacceptable. We can do better than that.
