Starting a Prayer Journal
Posted in Prayer
In my reading recently, I came across an idea for making one's prayer life more focused and meaningful by creating a prayer journal. I really like the idea of having a record of one's prayer life. Many of the psalms are prayers, cries from the heart of the psalmist to the Lord. So much of the book of psalms is the psalmist sharing his heart, his fears, his joys, his pain, his love, his blessings with his God. To have a similar book of my own struggles and triumphs in this journey of life would be a tremendous blessing, not only for me, but for my children who my someday read these prayers.
I have always appreciated the idea of keeping a journal, though I have not been very consistent at it. Because I learn and retain things best by seeing them, writing things down is very helpful for organizing my thoughts. A prayer journal is something that can assist in giving my prayers a focus and perhaps more vibrancy and fervency. It will also give me something to look back through to evaluate my walk with the Lord and whether I am growing in my spiritual life. I hope to be able to look back over it's pages some day and see, through what I have written there, that I have grown closer to the Lord.
What about you? Will you join me in starting a prayer journal? Mine won't be anything fancy, just a simple pre-bound book with blank pages on which I will share my heart with my God. A little bit like I do with you here on this crazy ol' blog of mine.

This is something that I have seriously thought about doing but the thought always seems to get drowned out by all my other thoughts! I would love to join you in starting a prayer journal! Tomorrow I will go out and by the journal and start it that night! Thanks for the encouragement! I might have a digital camera by then too so I will post a pic of it and blog about this idea of a prayer journal and link to you, okay?
JOYfully in Him,

Prayer journals are very powerful in helping us track our spiritual journey. When I first started mine I was so young in my faith. I look back often and thank God for what He has been doing in my life. My journal is full of life struggles, personal development, cries to God, and a lot of praise.
I will pray for you, and anyone else who decides to keep a journal, for strength. The enemy will be ever more vigilant in his efforts to thwart your prayer life. Stay strong and lean on Jesus.

Yes, I will join. I need to get back into this. I started one, and I became distracted and stopped. By the way, the ones that I started, one for the girls and one for the boys, will also be restarted. I had started writing them words of encouragement and direction for when they are older. I will restart these. Thanks for the blog.

I began a prayer journal just a little while ago--not too consistent with it yet, but even reading over previous entries is so encouraging--the Lord really does work in us day-by-day!
I'm pretty new at this site, will you be my friend? I really love your blog--and the lilacs!

Mar. 23, 2006 - prayer journal

I have been using a prayer journal for years and really enjoy it. I currently use a 5x7 3-ring binder with a page for hubby, each of the children, myself, family, friends, church needs, government, schools and religous organizations and a page for special prayer needs. I like the binder because I can add or remove pages easily. It makes updating much easier. My oldest children just made their own and the younger ones is a homemade one with pictures and cut-out. It has really organized our prayer time and helps to keep little minds focused. Thanks for the post.

I have kept a prayer journal for almost 20 years now. I have boxes in the attic that contain my old ones. It is neat to go back through them and read how the Lord was so faithful! It is a reminder of how much He has grown me, as well. It also keeps record of things that we have walked through. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have. I began it to help me stay focused while praying. It is a habit that has become a natural outflow of my time with Him. Could I recommend the Valley of Vision? It is a Puritan book of prayers that I recently received as a gift. WONDERFULLY convicting!
Blessings,
Becky
