A Peek Into Our Schoolroom

Posted in Homeschooling

Per Gena’s contest requirements (read about the contest here), I would like to share some pictures of our schoolroom and also share a little bit about how our homeschool runs.

Our schoolroom is really more like a library.  We also have our television in this room.

Our homeschool day starts with the children doing their chores, followed by breakfast.   Next we have our Bible reading time.  I use the Bible reading schedule laid out in The Home Educator’s Tutor (see my review of this wonderful resource).  We discuss our reading, and move on to Math time.  While my 5th grader works on his Saxon 6/5 Math lesson, I work with my Kindergartener on some hands on math concepts.  We then move on to Phonics instruction, using My Father’s World Kindergarten Curriculum.  When my 5th grader is finished with his math, he reads from the Christian Liberty Nature Reader 5, then whatever history reader he is reading at the time.  He does a couple of pages in Easy Grammar and we do a spelling test from Spelling Power.

The boys work on their math and other subjects that require a surface to write on at the kitchen table.

The boys like to find a comfortable spot to do their reading.

Next, we all snuggle onto the couch for our read aloud time.  We have nature and character stories, as well as art appreciation and composer study, from The Home Educator’s Tutor, geography from H.C. Holling’s Tree in the Trail, history from George Washington’s World,  and science from It Couldn’t Just Happen.  We also read from good children’s literature—right now we are reading The Wind in the Willows.  They narrate from one of these books each day.  My 5th grader and I work on words from English From the Roots Up for Latin instruction.  Our goal is to finish all of this by lunch time each day, but we don’t always make it.

After lunch, we do hands on projects, finish whatever we didn’t get done In the morning, sometimes they listen to a Your Story Hour CD, and then the children have free time.  When the weather is nice, we like to take nature walks in the afternoon.  On Wednesday afternoons, I take the children to art class.

We have a full but enjoyable schedule.  I like to keep things flexible, and we don’t do everything every day.

I hope you enjoyed this little peek into our homeschool day.

I love you bookshelves! And what a great schoolroom.
I also love all the read alouds! We are currently reading a H.C. Hollings book, too.
We are reading "Pagoo" to go along with our beachschooling adventures recently.
Thank you for sharing your schoolroom.

I love the fact that your classroom looks more like a library than a schoolroom. I'm inspired!

This does look beautiful! It puts my kitchen table to shame, but don't worry, I'm content! :)
I'll have to straighten up my space so that I can take pictures too! LOL

Your set up is much like mine but I like your shelves better.

Do you like Easy Grammar? I think I'm trying Easy Grammar Plus with the older 2 this year.
