A Day at the Orchard

Posted in Family Life

I took my children to the apple orchard today.  We spent the morning in the crisp fall air, picking shiny, round apples from the drooping branches.  What a delight it was for all of us to work together, filling our bags with juicy red fruit we will later enjoy in pies, sauces, crisps and many other tasty treats.  I found great pleasure in watching my children as they reached up and plucked the beautifully ripe fruit from the narled old branches.  A few pieces didn't quite make it into the bags, instead being eaten by eager young pickers intent on tasting one of autumn's greatest treasures.

As we walked down the hill to the car, I listened to the crunch of the fallen leaves under our feet, savoring the coolness of the fresh air.  In the distance, I looked to the hillside covered with the lovely colors so unique to this time of year.  The reds, golds, and oranges of a New England autumn are like nothing else one will ever see.  On the breeze, I smelled the faint sent of woodsmoke, which made me think of cozy firesides.  After we had paid for our apples, each of my children chose a small orange pumpkin to bring home.  Each lovely round pumpkin now rests by our backdoor, another sign that fall is here.

Now that we are home, I am enjoying the bounty of our trip to the orchard.  I have great plans to make plenty of delicious treats for my family with the fruit harvested today.  And most of all, I have the memory of a day spent under the clear azure sky of autumn, garnet, ruby, and topaz all around us as we enjoyed being together in the crisp air.  I love a day like this!

Wow, sounds like a perfect day. Days like that are why fall is my favourite season. I just wish we had the amazing colour changes here. I don't think anything compares to a New England fall!

Can a day be delicious? Because that day sounded delicious and that was before you started talking about the cooking!

Your post made me homesick. I moved from that area this spring and I am longing for autumn there.

Our family loves to go apple picking. It has become a tradtion to go almost every fall. Plus we have even tried cherry picking and peach picking at different times but apple time is our favorite. We went today but didn't go to our regular place and it turned out to be disappointing. An alternative place was too expensive and our regular place had already closed for the day. We did end up buying some apples at a good price eventually. Blessings.

I had my mom send me some cortlands. I miss the orchards in Maine the most I think. We always went for an apple orchard field trip too and picked a lot. Then I'd make apple sauce, pie, apple brownies (no there's no chocolate involved.) Anyway, I know there are orchards here but they can't possibly measure up....lol
