Art Books
While in search for the perfect art program next year (I wanted one that includes art appreciation), I have come across some great reading books during my search that I think will help perk up our study of different artists.
The Katie Series by James Mayhew
This series is a great introduction to art appreciation for young children. It is about a girl named Katie who goes with her grandmother to the Museum. While she is there looking at the pictures (and the grandma is snoozing), she gets into the pictures and has some different adventures. These books are very cute. My oldest daughter read them 3X each when I brought them home from the library. The two books that we have checked out are:
Katie Meets the Impressionists - in this book she goes into painting by Monet, Renoir & Degas.
Katie and the Mona Lisa - includes reproductions by Da Vinci, Raphael, Botticelli & Carpaccio.
Getting to Know the Worlds Greatest Artists by Mike Venezia
This is a great series for simple biographies of different artists for the elementary school level. To see a complete list of the different artist biographies available, visit his website: Mike Venezia.
The two books that I checked out were "Leonardo DaVinci" and "Paul Klee". I thought they were engaging and showed a some samples of the artists works. I do not know if any of his other books show some of what I would consider "inappropriate" paintings, but these were tastefully done!
The last author I check out was Laurence Anholt. He has written five books (that I know of) which tell a story about the artist and a true character in the artists life.
Camille & the Sunflowers is about a young boy Camille who befriends Vincent Van Gogh and some of the pictures that Van Gogh paints in the village. While the pictures are just illustrations of some of the artists work (Starry Night, The Sunflowers,
Leonardo and the Flying Boys is about two young apprentices of DaVinci's and some of the different inventions as well as paintings he has made.
