Apr. 5, 2008 - New Unit-Butterflies

After Spring Break we began our Butterfly unit.
The first week we talked about The parts of a butterfly. The head, thorax and abdomen.
We learned that they are insects and have 6 legs.
We learned the 4 stages in the life cycle. Egg-Larva-Pupa-Adult.
This week we learned that butterflies have scales on their wings and if you pick them up by their wings you can damage them. We also learned that they have 4 wings. The 2 on each side move together.
We learned about 2 different types of butterflies. The Blue Swallowtail and the Painted Lady.
These larva here will become Painted Lady butterflies.
From our observation this week we learned that the 5 larva are:
Shedding their exoskeletens, growing and they have webs.

Mar. 7, 2008 - Dinosaurs

This week we began a new unit on Dinosaurs.
We talked about them being created on Day 6 of Creation Week.
When God said he created the beasts of the field.
We discussed fossils, what palentologists do.
So for an Ice Breaker I gave the boys 2 puzzles mixed together.
They had to all (12) work together to put them together.
I explained that this is similar to what Palentologists have to do. In fact when they first discovered Dinosaur bones, they had never seen them before and did not know how they should fit together.
In the same way these boys had never seen these puzzles before, they had to figure out which piece went to which puzzle. They were able to work together well and within 20 minutes had them complete.

Mar. 7, 2008 - Fun Fridge Magnets

We made these fun fridge magnets today.
Then we did a fun team building exercise. I gave the girls 2 puzzles that were mixed together. I gave half the peices to each table. They had to sort them out and put them together. It was very interesting because they had never seen the puzzles before and they had no idea what they should look like.

It took them about 20-25 minutes to sort it all out. They did a good job and learned that it took cooperation and communication to be able to work together to figure it out. After this exercise we did it again. But this time I showed each table a different puzzle-the one they would be assembling. And each table had all the pieces of the puzzle and only had 6 or 7 girls working together at each table. They also had the back of the puzzle that showed where the pieces went. This time it only took about 5 minutes for them to assemble the puzzles. So I know the girls learned alot about being part of a team. |

Feb. 21, 2008 - Valentine's Day Craft
Feb. 21, 2008 - Creation day 5

Swimming Creatures and Birds of the air.
We discussed the Octopus because it is such a remarkable creature. 8 arms and 3 hearts.
It pumps blue blood through the heart, has a highly intellegent brain in that it can open a jar underwater and it has a beak which helps it to penetrate crab shells.
So I thought it would be fun to make our own creatures, we could decide after looking at them
if they were going to be sea or air creatures.
We dropped paint onto the paper and let each boy fold it over and smooth out the paint.
Here are some of the pictures. We let each boy decide if they wanted theirs to be a sea or air creature.

Feb. 21, 2008 - Contenders Creation Unit Day 3 Pictures of our grass critters now.

Here is the sock critters we made. Now with grass seed hair!
This is Tegan's. He had a full head of hair in a very short time.

This is Peyton's with the one I made as an example for class. It took longer to actually get the grass to grow. Once I finally took it out of the window seal and put it on the counter it began growing. I think the sun was drying it out to fast after I watered it. |

Feb. 7, 2008 - Contenders Class Week 5 - Creation Day 4 Sun, Moon and Stars.

Today in class we discussed God's creating the Sun, Moon and Stars on day 4. One thing that we pointed out was that in the theory of Evolution they believe that the sun existed before the earth. But God says the earth was created first, in fact dry land and plants even came forth before the creation of the sun, moon and stars. We discussed the planets, what the sun does for us, and that God gave us them for signs and seasons.

We discussed God bringing forth the dry land on Day 3 of creation. We made these cute sock critters. They have grass seed at the top and potting soil. We had each boy decorate one and put it in a cup. They are to wet it and place it in a window seal so that the grass can grow. It will look like hair and they can groom it.

Feb. 7, 2008 - Keepers Week 3 -Crafts Yarn Hair Tie

This week I taught the girls how to decorate a normal hair tie. We also discussed that you could use ribbon or even material strips. For this class I decided we would use yarn, thinking it would be the easiest. I must admit that some of the younger girls were challeneged in tying the knots. Overall I was very happy with how they did and they were able to leave with something they can now wear and show off to their friends and family. Plus they have learned a skill in creativity.

This is the tie I made and used as an example. The girls picked various colors of yarn depending upon what colors they wanted. Here is dd's. (I hope to get more pictures next week, they really turned out beautiful!)
She chose Spring colors. As you can see it is not finished all around, but It can be hid under her hair. She was one of those challenged in tying the knots.

Here are a couple others that were done. The girls wore them the following week to class!

Jan. 25, 2008 - Contender's Week 3- Creation Day 2 God made the sky!
This week we drew day 2 in our notebooks. We discussed the sky and how
God divided the waters above and below the sky.
Here is a picture of what the boys are drawing each week.
So far they have done Day 1 and Day 2.

After this we finished up the class with a game of Duck Duck Goose, the person that was goosed was asked a trivia question regarding creation days and also the books of the NT, which we are covering weekly. The boys really seemed to enjoy the game time and I think they are learning alot! |
