For those who have not already earned their watercolor badge. They will be earning that as well.

We will also be doing some sort of Bible Memory Badge. I am still working on
that. And will decide over the summer. These are possibilities:

Oct. 31, 2008 - Cookie Baking Unit

We decided to bump up the Baking unit and end with the Needlepoint unit.
Last week we talked about measuring. How to measure flour-you scoop and scrape.
Measuring sugar you gently shake off the excess to get an even amount.
We talked about tools for cooking. Measuring cups 1/2 cup, 1/4 cup etc.
We talked about teaspoons and tablespoons etc.
We practiced measuring different items.
This week we actually made cookies in class. Each girl was assigned part of the recipe.
Here are some pictures.
Measuring and adding flour.
Measuring sugar
Breaking the eggs.
Scooping the cookie dough onto the baking sheet.
Mrs. April baked them while the girls finished their morning classes.
Each girl got a baggie of cookies at lunch time-that they could take home and enjoy.

We sent them home so they could be painted and hung up.
We also talked about our state bird (Mockingbird) and listened to it's song.

Sep. 1, 2008 - Birds

Each girl was given a packet to take home. This packet should be returned each week. In the packet there is a picture of a bird, a report page and a scavenger hunt of things to learn while we study this unit.

This week we discussed different things about birds. Here is a picture of the girls acting like cranes. We learned that cranes do this to keep warm.

Aug. 15, 2008 - Watercolors
Aug. 15, 2008 - Club begins.
This was our first week back in our Keepers At Home Club.
Each girl that had her class materials was
presented with a special "Prepared" award.
We also have an exciting announcement regarding next semester.
We will be offering 2 classes. Our regular Pebbles class for ages 7-9.
And a new class for ages 4-6 "Little Keepers."
KOF just put out a new handbook for the younger children.
They revised the skills so children can begin working on skills earlier.
This is great. Before we had to try to scale down many units in order
to accommodate our younger children. But now the hard part is done for us!

We learned that they are insects and have 6 legs.
We learned the 4 stages in the life cycle. Egg-Larva-Pupa-Adult.
This week we learned that butterflies have scales on their wings and if you pick them up by their wings you can damage them. We also learned that they have 4 wings. The 2 on each side move together.
We learned about 2 different types of butterflies. The Blue Swallowtail and the Painted Lady.
These larva here will become Painted Lady butterflies.
From our observation this week we learned that the 5 larva are:
Shedding their exoskeletens, growing and they have webs.

Mar. 7, 2008 - Fun Fridge Magnets

We made these fun fridge magnets today.
Then we did a fun team building exercise. I gave the girls 2 puzzles that were mixed together. I gave half the peices to each table. They had to sort them out and put them together. It was very interesting because they had never seen the puzzles before and they had no idea what they should look like.

It took them about 20-25 minutes to sort it all out. They did a good job and learned that it took cooperation and communication to be able to work together to figure it out. After this exercise we did it again. But this time I showed each table a different puzzle-the one they would be assembling. And each table had all the pieces of the puzzle and only had 6 or 7 girls working together at each table. They also had the back of the puzzle that showed where the pieces went. This time it only took about 5 minutes for them to assemble the puzzles. So I know the girls learned alot about being part of a team. |
