St. Lucia's Day ~ December 13th

Posted in Homemaking

We are going to do a little something on St. Lucia's Day this year.  My husband is 25% Swedish and our last name is Seaborg, so it is fitting that St. Lucia's Day is celebrated in our home.  The thing is, he is so American that he doesn't know anything about Sweden or Swedish customs, so basically I'm just using that as an excuse to celebrate St. Lucia's Day.  Why not add another fun day to keep the holiday season rolling along?

I don't know enough yet about St. Lucia's Day to explain the holiday to you.  But I do know that there is a custom of the eldest daughter serving her parents breakfast in bed on the morning of St. Lucia's Day.  I am all over that!  I hope 8 years old is old enough!

I'll let other sites tell you more about St. Lucia's Day:

Here is a little history on St. Lucia's Day

This is a photograph of a little girl in a white dress with a red sash.  She has battery-operated candles on her head and is carrying a serving tray for her parents.

I wish my own were young yet so I could try all of these great ideas. But, alas, mine are all grown and gone except for BJ who is 17.
BTW, when he was 8, I was in bed with a horrible fractured leg and ankle, and he cooked for me all the time, and became quite a cook! So breakfast in bed shouldn't be a problem for your little one. Sounds like fun to me! Enjoy!

Papa's Wife or Papa's Daughter? Both are delightful reads of a Swedish pastor and his family and their experiences in Sweden and later America. They are written by Thyra Ferre Bjorn and she is the daughter that Papa's Daughter is based upon. I can't remember which one (maybe both) have St. Lucia's Day celebrations. Anyhow...as you can tell, I thoroughly enjoyed those books both as a child and as an adult...and now my daughter loves them too :)

Hi, my name is Gail, I live in California about 30 miles east of San Francisco. I originally found your site when I did a search for herbal neck pillows. Sometimes we get so busy in life, we find what we are looking for yet we don't venture beyond that point. How many times do we LOSE in life when we choose to move so quickly! I wanted to thank you for your knowledge on what I was looking for first, AND so much more. I'm Swedish also, my Grandfather "got off the boat" when he was 8 yet I never knew him, he died before I was even born. I never had the chance to ask him about "the old country" and custom's, ways that things are celebrated there. I found your section on that very informative. I don't have a "cowboy", but, if you have any that do the "Valley Circuit" in California, hook me up girl! Even though I now live back in the city, I did spend almost 5 years in Texas, in the country where I learned SO MUCH there....spiritually (went to a great church!), home making (as I was a stay at home Mom for four kids while I was there). Never did home school, and anyone who takes that on truly needs to be commended, as I see that as a humongous task and responsibility. Kuddo's to you girl! Anyway, best wishes from "out west", Gail Van Burgel
