Welcome to my blog on topics about keeping the home - or attempting to - as a Gen X Mom of four and wife to one. :) This blog is written by me, Lori Seaborg, from the Florida-Alabama Gulf Coast. I'm not the person who is ahead of you in mothering and homemaking knowledge. I'm just the gal right beside you, motivating the 11yo daydreamer, keeping up with the 9yo future homemaker extraordinaire (every mama needs a helper like this one!), teaching the rascally 6-year-old while occupying the 3yo. Let's learn together!
Honestly, I'd rather skip the focus of today -- the Children's Rooms! Tim and I were blessed greatly with one little one who cleans spectacularly and organizes her room daily. ...... And then we have boys....two that don't want to pick up and don't seem to be able to organize. I have them do daily chores, but they just don't see the messes! Or so they say...
I've removed quite a few of their toys, but I've never done the drastic measure that Mrs. Cat suggests. I'll take things away for a little while, then feel bad about it and return it to the culprit. Mrs. Cat is much stronger than that.
You may be on to them! I remember Bill Crosby saying that domestic blindness was a tricky strategy by men to get out of doing stuff!! My boys are exactly the same - we have had to "teach" them that tidiness is worth it, "teach" them to see stuff and slow them down so they actually take the time to do it. Today is a birthday in our house so no decluttering for me today. Hopefully we will get into some tomorrow.

I had never seen this one before, and it has some great ideas. Thanks for pointing me to it.
As for the kid's rooms idea, I think it is great. I used a modified version of this when my kid's were young. I would put the things in a box and put that box away for a full month. They under no circumstances could have the items back until the month was up. After the month was up, they got them back, but if they weren't put away again after that, they went to GoodWill.
The comment about Bill Cosby made me remember an episode where Theo had everything taken out of his room, and he had to pay to have each thing back. He wanted to be treated like an adult, so Dad took everything and made him earn each thing, as he (Dad) was the real owner of each thing, since he had bought it. It was such a funny episode!
