Keeping the Home by Lori Seaborg

First, you need to decide on your genre. "Genre" means "what kind of writing do you want to do"? (Fiction? Well, then, which type? Christian historical romance or steamy secular romance?). If you don't know yet, then do some dabbling in many different types of writing to see where your talents lie, and read, read, read in your chosen genre. Read quality writing from published authors who are successful in that genre.
Did you notice that I said you're going to have to read? If you are serious about writing, you will choose to develop a passionate love of reading. Don't say you don't have the time, because we all know that everyone has the same 24 hours in the day. Keep a book with you always to take advantage of times when you are stuck in traffic or are waiting at a restaurant for your group to come. Read in your chosen genre, and also read books and articles on writing. By reading, you are giving yourself a writing education.
Here are just a few places to begin reading:
Writer's Weekly: an online writing magazine (free).
Two other tips that may help as you start on your writing venture:
And finally, my most important bit of advice: Just because almost everyone writes, that does not mean that writing is easy. I find that many aspiring writers want to be published now, without putting in the time it takes to learn the craft of writing. Be patient and realize that you need an education in writing, just as you would need an education to work in any other professional field. This "education" may be received through paid courses or through simply reading and writing every single day.
If you really want it, if God has blessed you with just an ounce of talent, and especially if you are willing to work hard at it, I know you can become a writer!

Someone recently asked me how to get more readers to their blog. Here is what I suggested:
1. The best way to keep others visiting your blog is to blog! Silly-sounding, but it works! Blog every day if possible (that's something I preach but don't practice), but at least a few times a week. Readers will stop coming to your blog if they don't see new posts. 2. Visit others' blogs and leave comments there. This is my #1 way of promoting my own blog. Don't only say, "Come visit my blog" - that' s not in good taste because it is too much like blog-spamming (blog spamming is when companies send out "robots" to post a "Come visit our site" ad on blogs. It's free for them, but not very nice as they didn't pay for the ad, and sometimes their site is a bit shady). Instead, comment on the blog post that you just read or welcome the blogger to the community, along with your note to "come visit my blog." Even if you don't invite them to your blog, out of curiosity people will click through to your blog (always sign in before commenting or your comment will be "anonymous," and then there won't be a link to click). 3. Add a few friends to your blog. When people see that they are your "friend" they will often add you, too, and they'll be curious about your blog, so will visit it. You can add friends in the maintenance page (where you add new posts). Click on "Manage Friends." 4. When you write a post, now and then end it with a question. In your post on Managing School Time, you might ask, at the end of the article, "So how do you manage your school time?" This encourages commenters. 5. You need to have your blog in your email signature. Write it in its full form, such as http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/KeepingtheHome . By adding the http://www, you are making the link clickable. Anyone who reads your emails will then know about your blog. 6. At HomeschoolBlogger.com, the beginning of your most recent post is placed on the "portal page" for a while (http://www.homeschoolblogger.com) . You may want to post during the evenings, or during a time when you think quite a few people are online and looking the portal page, so they will come visit your blog through there.
Does anyone else have any other suggestions?
