Homeschooling in the Heartland

Sep. 28, 2009 - Caleb strikes again!

This weekend, we had Abby's birthday party.  As part of her party we had a lady come to do facials and skin care/make-up lessons for the girls.  Emma participated a little bit, just with what was appropriate for her age.  One of the things they did was brush powder on their face.  After Em put some powder on, she ran over to me to show me her face.  Caleb chased after her frantic saying, "EMMA don't run, the make-up might fall off your face!!!"

Caleb just called out to me, "Mom, I have a weally bad headache."  I replied, "I'm sorry, Buddy.  Would you like something for that?"  Which got the response, "Yeah, like a banana."

May. 1, 2009 - Brothers

We watched a family movie last night.  Caleb and Noah sat in a chair together.  They are good buddies.  All of a sudden, Caleb announced, "I'm scared."  And, without missing a beat, Noah replied, "It okay, Baba.  I got you."  And hugged his big brother around the neck.

Apr. 23, 2009 - Abby in Spain

This is Abby at a castle they visited in Segovia, Spain while on a missions trip in March.  I don't know how to make it bigger, but Abby is standing on the left in a brown jacket looking out at the view.

Apr. 21, 2009 - Caleb strikes again

Tonight, Emma said, "Once in the middle of the day, I saw half of the moon out."

Daddy asked, "Where was the other half?"

Caleb pipes up, "In New Jersey."

***************

The girls were recounting a story about a time Caleb had stood on our dirt hill and 'preached' to them.  In the middle of their story, Caleb says, "I got really dizzy spinning around and around and around with my words."  Meaning, he was talking in circles. ;)

Dec. 17, 2008 - I love my kids!

The 3 big kids had their Christmas program at church tonight.  Abby helped lead worship with the kids church.  She did great., and is growing up before my eyes.  Emma sang and smiled and danced as an angel to 'O Holy Night' - beautiful!  Caleb was sitting with the preschool/kindergarten group.  They would sing and then sit on the front row until their turn came again.  Everytime he went up front, he waved at me.  Except for the time he gave me a thumbs up sign. ;)  One song they sang was "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas".  They held up pictures of a hippo and they were attached onto a stick.  He waved it back and forth, turned it around and rested it on his forehead, covered his face with it and peeked around it grinning.  Then he got poked in the eye with someone else's picture.  The next song he sang, his hand was covering his eye the whole time.  After that song, on his way to sit down, he noticed his dad.  So, he went over to Daddy and said, "Hey, Daddy, did you see my new Christmas sweater?"  Apparently, it was pretty cool and he wanted to be sure Daddy noticed! ;)  My friend said she got that one on tape, as she was sitting right next to Daddy.  ;)

Noah has come down with something and had a fever when we got home.  Abby's school concert is tomorrow night.  She came to me when we got home and said, "Mommy, just so you know, I'm totally fine with you not coming to my concert tomorrow.  It's more important that Noah gets well, than you coming to hear a bunch of songs you've heard a million times."  Awww.  How sweet is that, and how blessed am I?

Mommy - "That's so cool, Buddy."

Mommy - "I'm glad.  So, we picked a good name for you, huh?"

C- "Yep!  When I grow up, I'm going to be a super spy dad."

(He's been saying lately that he's going to have a lot of kids - like 100.)

Oct. 27, 2008 - Noah is learning a few new words...

I am always hoping he will pick up some more words.  He's 21 months old today, but his prematurity keeps his development 2 months behind that.  So, this morning when he said the words ear, foot, owie and pee, I was really excited!!  I guess there is one of those that could come back to haunt me, but for the moment, I'm happy!!!!!

Oct. 27, 2008 - Caleb strikes again

Yesterday, Caleb got ahold of the Lysol spray.  He sprayed and sprayed our bathroom.  He was so very proud of himself.  He calls out to Abby, "Abby, do you smell that?  Isn't it refweshing?!"

We were in the van last week, and all of a sudden Caleb said, "God was soft."  I assumed he meant on the CD we were listening to that they sang the word, "God" softly.  I asked him about it, and he replied, "No.  When He made me, God was soft."  I asked him if he remembered that, and he said that he did.

Sep. 25, 2008 - Soccer

Saturday, Daddy and Caleb went to Soccer.  Notice Caleb's nice purple soccer shirt?  Remember that, it's purple.  When they came home, Caleb was soooo excited about his medal.  He told me how hard he had played.  "I weally played hawd, Mommy!"  I asked if his team won and that was the reason he had a medal.  He replied, "YES, Mommy!  We won!  The kid kicked it in the goal!!"  Daddy then informed me it was the only goal of the game - and the kid was from the blue team.  Oh, how I love four year olds!  And, I don't think I laughed in his face. . .

Sep. 16, 2008 - Ike hits the midwest!

There was so much rain this weekend that school was cancelled Monday for Abby, due to flooding roads.  Caleb and Emma still had school.  Emma doesn't think that is fair.  Daddy told her that if the road to her school was flooded, she wouldn't have school either.  I told Emma that she is not permitted to flood our hallway.  :)

Sep. 3, 2008 - A couple of things . . .

Yesterday, Caleb, Noah and I were in Wal-Mart.  All of a sudden, Caleb pipes up with, "Mommy, why do we even need toys?  We should just use our imaginations all the time!"  Ahhh, that is music to my ears!

Today, Emma and Caleb have invented two 'worlds' of their own.  One is Finger World.  Their first two fingers walk around this litlte 'world' they created and are the 'people'.  The other world is Sea World.  No, not what you are thinking.  This is a world where we are all swimming people and their pets are sea horses that gallop and cats named Seaweed.  It has all been very entertaining and so sweet to see them play together and use their imaginations so well.

Today, I got a call to schedule a speech eval. for Caleb.  She was asking me questions and says, "Your homeschool?"  And, I thought she said, "You homeschool".  So, I said, "Yes."  Um, she meant what is our district we live it.

Aug. 28, 2008 - Move over bacon - watch out for Emma!

Do you remember that old commercial for Sizzlelean - "Move over bacon, now there's something leaner"?  Well, I often borrow that phrase and say, "Move over bacon..."  Today, after saying that to Emma, she replied, "Move over pancakes!"

Aug. 22, 2008 - Caleb is quite a guy . . .

Caleb crawled in bed with me very early this morning, and slept in Daddy's spot.  I just assumed he was insecure b/c Daddy's gone for a few days.  When I told dh about it, he said, "Oh, he was protecting you because he's the 'man of the day' when I'm gone."  (Caleb says he's 'man of the day', instead of man of the house, whenever dh is away.)  So, later I hear Caleb telling Emma he climbed in bed with me to protect me b/c he is the man of the day.   Love  Oh, be still my beating heart.  Isn't that the most precious boy?!?

Aug. 22, 2008 - Emma's story of the day...

In Emma's language book today, she had to list 6 of the most beautiful things she has ever seen.  She got two down and then got stuck.  Want to know what the two were?

1. Mommy
2. Abby

After that she asked me and we brainstormed together.  She ended up adding

3. ballet
4. my friends
5. flowers
6. Noah's big blue eyes

Then she had to write a few sentences about the beautiful things, I am using her spelling ;) -

1.  Ballet is graceful.
2.  Mom is beautiful, so is Noah's big blew eas, and Abby and my frinds.
3.  Flowrs are the most beautiful plant I have ever seen.
