This Is How I See You All . . .
Posted in Family Life
My wonderful friend Wendy (MusicMomto3), at CHC brought up a very interesting subject today on one of her posts. In it she mentioned how she viewed the other mother's in the homeschool online support group, and how she visualized their day's:
"So I picture that you all have children that never talk back, always pick up their toys when they are done, never do things to each other just to make the other person mad, always use words and not fists or screams. They always eat was is served without complaint and put their dishes away when finished. Your children never argue when it's time to do some schoolwork because they'd rather play. And I picture your houses ready for company at all times. There is fresh baked bread either in the oven or on the counter. The rooms are spotless and there is never a poopy diaper smell anywhere. The school stuff is perfectly organized and you have the lessons all planned out and ready to go. Oh, and the lessons are all so creative that no one is ever bored. You are always so calm and never raise your voice or get frustrated. Anyway, it's been a rough day here at our house, can you tell? Sometimes, I feel like I'm all alone in this..."
Oh if only this scenario were true, but alas it is not. And to prove it, here is the picture I posted for Wendy to see of my perfect life that she visualizes:

Okay, now here is Kelly's very real kitchen. I took this yesterday. See the apple I ate for a snack that morning that is still on the island at 4 p.m.! Look to the left of the sink. Yep . . . all my dishes from the night before and that day still not washed . Oh my goodness is that the toaster there? Yep that was from yesterday mornings breakfast. The beautiful flowers on the island . . well they are dying rapidly and all the petals are falling on the countertop now. Oh and the water in the vase needs to be changed. Now mind you that I was deep cleaning the rest of my house and let the kitchen slide yesterday, but the reality is that my house and life is far from perfect ;-). So, as you see . . . not everything in cyber world is as it seems. Our minds love to paint pretty pictures of how everyone lives such perfect lives that we want to obtain. I too am guilty of visualizing other people's lives being all neat and orderly, done with the utmost care. However,The reality is . . . we live in our homes 24/7 as homeschooling families and there is bound to be crumbs on the counter, dishes in the sink, laundry piled high, and tubs and toilets that need cleaning. What is most important is that our children are learning, growing and being mentored in real life experiences and not living in a perfect bubble.
Thank you Melissa (Seeking_His_face_04), another CHC friend for this book graphic! That is just too funny
So how many of you also live imperfect homeschooling lives? I am sure we would love to hear about your imperfect day. Please share. :-)

Thank you for sharing your life with us. I have to relax a bit...I flip out if the kitchen island is piled with project stuff...I"m thinking to myself, "Am I expecting an HGTV camera crew or something?" But I have to admit, our schoolroom is very "lived in"....I really just let DC, especially 5yo DD "explore" in there. Of course, some days there isn't much room left for "exploring". Of course, then there are their rooms. Yep, our hs life is imperfect (except for the kitchen island). In fact, there are still 2 Christmas ornament storage boxes sitting in the family room...and the 3 wisemen are still on a coffee table. But, we've had a great week glueing robots...that's what DD will remember.
Thank you for reminding us that it's ok to have the flower petals on the counter ...

ok, so I would have had to clean up my kitchen a bit to take that photo Kelly!! I actually posted the following on another web site last night. It fits here.
Clean houses are overrated! Kids need exposure to a variety of germs to build up tolerence and resistance. My kids should be immune to just about everything by now!
I’ll clean my house the day after my last precious child leaves the nest. And I’ll miss the mess while I do it.

Wow! it is nice to know that not everyone has the HGTV home. There are times when I go to someone elses home and just feel BLAH, 1 reason is there home has NO trace of children living there, and 2 it is absolutly perfect. About 3 mnths ago my husband and I received the PERFECT gift from our children ( ds10 and dd6) they were in the back seat with their baby brother and we got ready to pull in the drive way and our ds10 said " sis isn't great to be home" and dd6 said "I love home". DH and I got teary eyed because we sacrafice SO much so that I can be home with our blessings and I felt the Lord saying "Thank You for raising my children to your best ability and Thank You for the sacrafices! Also, I heard a mom once say that she always thought her home had to be an A+ home she had 3 boys, all were 18mnths apart. She finally realized that her A+ home would sometimes have to be a C+ if she wanted to make memories with her children. I have to remind myself of that at times! SORRY SO LONG!

...honest post! I have heard mom after mom beat herself up after hearing another "perfect" mom talk about her "perfect" home and her "perfect" homeschool....while sometimes these talks are misinterpreted, sometimes speakers and writers do come across as if they have it all together and as if anyone who doesn't is a failure. In the process they do so much more harm than good. The women who really encourage and help other women are the ones who admit the struggles but share the fruits of the successes that take place because of obedience to God and hearts and homes filled with God's love.
You probably won't get a comment from every woman you encouraged with your post, but believe me, you've encouraged some hearts!

Kelly is spunky, very unconventional at times, fun to talk with, my best friend, and an incredible Mom and mentor to our dd. She is not afraid
to lovingly hear from and tell people the truth when it is required, and is a true covenant friend. She is passionate about her relationship with the Lord, justice and righteousness, and you may see that in
our blog. She loves people deeply, and sometimes gets hurt because of it - wearing her heart on her sleeve. Hearing her talk on the phone, laugh and have fun with her friends
always makes me grin from the other room. She has great JOY!

"The truth is, if we claim Christ, we are never justified in being unkind,
cold, indifferent, or cruel. Even if true serious sin needs to be addressed or dealt with,
it should be in love, and love is kind, gentle, long-suffering, it seeks to elevate others,
it is hopeful, assumes the best, etc. .."
~ Jen Igarashi in her post from June 14th, 2007 "I Wanna Be A Buffalo"
"As parent educators, we need to embrace a new notion of learning.
We need to help the child discern the Lords will and equip him to answer his particular call. It is the
heart and soul of the child we want to touch. For our purposes, we need to engage the heart in order to
effectively educate the child. Our vision of a well-educated child is a child who has a heart for learning,
a child who has the tools he needs to continue to learn for a lifetime and the love to want to do it."
~ Edith Stein
"A blessed thing it is for any man or woman to have a friend,
one human soul whom we can trust utterly, who knows the best and worst of us, and who loves us in spite
of all our faults."
~ Charles Kingsley
"Knowing the past about a person doesn't make us prophetic,
but calling them into their future does! The question has never been, "Can we read the history of
a man?" The question has always been, "Can we restore the future of a man?" Anyone can read the history
of the man, but the Heart of the Father is to release the unfulfilled destiny of His broken children."
~ Denny Steyne Mountain of Worship
"Out of defeat can come the best in human nature. As Christians
face storms of adversity, they may rise with more beauty. They are like trees that grow on mountain
ridges -- battered by winds, yet trees in which we find the strongest wood."
~ Billy Graham
