Homeschooling With Index Cards ~ TOO COOL!

Posted in LOW COST Homeschool Ideas

I came across a really neat site today and wanted to share it with you.  MOLLY, over at Homeschooling With Index Cards has some great ideas for utilizing index cards (for all ages) in your everyday learning.

Molly shows you how to use index cards for games, flashcards, handbook cards, daily weather, chores, daily lessons and Bible, notebooking, lapbooking etc. She also has an area where you can download some FREEBIES (whoohoo). However, don't forget to peruse the products she offers, as they are affordable and ingenious to boot.

We have been using these rectangular goodies and notebooking for our learning the past few years, but it is always nice to get some more creative ideas, and it looks like Molly has them.  Check out Molly's site and then mosey on over to her blog for some extra daily wisdom on index cards.

¢$¢ ~ Creative Ways To Save Money This Winter ~ ¢$¢

Posted in LOW COST Homeschool Ideas

Wow, I just realized it has been several weeks since I have worked on my blog.  We have been "crazy busy" the last three weeks and today I finally get a breather.  So I wanted to take some time out and share some creative ways that I have found to save on our winter bills.  I would love to hear your ideas also, and will add them as they come in.

LINE DRY CLOTHING INSIDE:  I know this sounds a bit "backwoods" but it really helps in several ways.  We have a gas dryer and since gas prices are way up and heating costs this winter will be doubled (see USA news report ).  We have a portable clothes rack ,for guests, when they come to stay with us. We are using that to hang extra clothes, along with other space in the laundry room for hanging clothes.  I can get three times the amount of laundry done for half the cost. I just make sure to add twice the amount of fabric softener so that the clothes are not stiff after drying (key!!).  Another reason to do this is to help bring more moisture into the air during the winter.  I know the air up here in Minnesota gets very dry  inside, so by line drying the clothes, in the home, it keeps the moisture level in the air just right (save on vaporizer usage), and makes the house smell fresh.

PLASTIC WINDOW INSULATOR KITS: These can be found at any home Improvement Store and stops drafts, prevent frost build-up and reduces condensation. They apply easily, shrinking tight, wrinkle-free, and clear as glass, so you can see outside.  The cost is about $5 a window but worth it to save on heating costs.

CHANGE GROCERY STORES: We have always shopped at the main chain of grocery stores here in Minnesota, or wherever we have lived, but have since decided to explore our options.  We came across a really cool new store called ALDI that has cut our grocery bill in half.  It is a simple place and the items are still in boxes (much like Sam's stores), and you have to bring your own bags to the store (or pay 5 cents each), but hey . . .  you cut half the cost off your bill.  See if there is a store near you.

SHARE ERRANDS WITH NEIGHBORS: Trade off helping one another with errands to post office, grocery store, pharmacy, etc.  or carpool.

FRESH SMELLING HOUSE TIP: Take a spray bottle (I use an old Febreeze one) add 1/2 water and 1/2 fabric softener (spot test furniture before use).  You may have to add less fabric softener, and more water depending on fabrics in your home.  Spray on furniture, bedding, carpeting, draperies etc. for an intensely fresh smelling home.  Another great reason is . . .  it helps keep static cling down and repels pet hair & dust from these surfaces. Vacumming is a breeze as dirt and hair come right up off these surfaces after they have been sprayed with this concoction.  I actually found this after researching the internet for a solution to help repel pet hair from furniture (we have two Retriever's and a Calico cat).  People compliment us all the time on how great our house smells and looks, saying they wouldn't even know we have pets inside.

How about you?  Any great tips you'd like to share, to help save winter household costs??

 Newspaper and Bible As Curriculum

posted by KyMentor @ http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/KyMentor

"One year when funds were very low, we used the newspaper and the Bible as our primary "curriculum" and the library along with the internet when we were inspired to dig deeper into a topic. All topics, at all grade levels can be found and covered just using these two primary sources."

High Quality, Real Resources For Home Library

Posted By Lisa @  "Me and My House Ministries"  http://me-and-my-house.org/blog

"We have found the absolute best way to provide an excellent education that doesn't break the bank is to purchase carefully selected high quality "Real Resources" that are are non-consumable and not grade-leveled. We look for resources that are among the best on the topic and suitable for all ages. This allows us to build a home library of excellence, usable by all, and used over and over. We rarely buy anything that is considered a "school book". I buy used, when I can find good condition that will stand up to use. I am a biblophile, so we have a huge home library, but it has been built over MANY years, and certainly all those books are not NEEDED to provide an excellent education. I am far more interested in giving my children a quality Biblical education than a "cheap" or free one. But we, like many other home educators are on a single income (previously SMALL single income) with a very large family; our dollars must go for worthwhile, lasting resources. At times this has meant a larger initial outlay - that we had to sacrifice for, but it always pays off later."

Internet Resources/Links

Posted by Selah @ http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/Selah

"The Internet is a treasure trove on finding free lesson plans. I have been able to find science & history units with a Christian world view to use as a guide when making my plans. After developing a basic framework for our studies I then go online to our library and reserve books and videos for our units. A homeschool unit all for free...unless I have overdue fines for not getting the books back on time! :)

I have also used the online museums and found a number of flash cards to print off to help the children study. I require writing of some sort each day and use a teacher's workbook that I have on hand for my scope & sequence there."

Core Knowledge Series
Posted by Becky from "LamereAcademy
" @ http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/LaMereAcademy

" . . .My idea, if I ever had to homeschool with very little money is to use the Core Knowledge Series by E. D. Hirsch. The "What Your ____ Needs to Know" They are great as a starting point of what your child needs to know each year and by using those and your library you could homeschool your child very inexpensively."

Become A Product Reviewer ~ Great Idea!!

Posted By JenIG @ http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/JenIG

". . .  One of the ways that I have saved money is becoming a Product Reviewer. The Old Schoolhouse Magazine www.TheHomeschoolMagazine.com has some spots open for reviewers if anyone is interested. You have to be able to write relatively well, and be willing to write honest, thoughtful, organized reviews about the resources that you agree to take (it becomes yours to keep), and also keep Kate Kesslers deadlines for completion (you generally have 2 to 4 months to finish a review). Here is where the finished reviews appear (and stay indefinitely) http://www.thehomeschoolmagazine.com/reviews/
I've reviewed everything from a guitar, full boxed curriculums from AOP, BJUP, and CLE, books, history programs, games, art programs, videos, writing programs, phonics programs, toys, etc."

Local Library & High Test Scores

Posted By Dawn @ The Christian Homeschool Corner

"Most libraries have free resourses to use . Ours has a homeschool section with the teachers manuals and some unit studies and such. We use the library alot! We also think of a topic the kids like to research, and I go through the materials and make up questions from the reading (give a test).  And  both my kids scored very high on their testing as in 1st grade level & above.  I only mentioned that  because some ( not on here) have said they can not learn much that way.  Tests say different! It is the district  that tests them not me at year end." (The only cost: Dawn used Horizons Math Curriculum for $22)

Kelly is spunky, very unconventional at times, fun to talk with, my best friend, and an incredible Mom and mentor to our dd. She is not afraid to lovingly hear from and tell people the truth when it is required, and is a true covenant friend. She is passionate about her relationship with the Lord, justice and righteousness, and you may see that in our blog. She loves people deeply, and sometimes gets hurt because of it - wearing her heart on her sleeve. Hearing her talk on the phone, laugh and have fun with her friends always makes me grin from the other room. She has great JOY!

"The truth is, if we claim Christ, we are never justified in being unkind, cold, indifferent, or cruel. Even if true serious sin needs to be addressed or dealt with, it should be in love, and love is kind, gentle, long-suffering, it seeks to elevate others, it is hopeful, assumes the best, etc. .."

~ Jen Igarashi in her post from June 14th, 2007 "I Wanna Be A Buffalo"

"As parent educators, we need to embrace a new notion of learning. We need to help the child discern the Lords will and equip him to answer his particular call. It is the heart and soul of the child we want to touch. For our purposes, we need to engage the heart in order to effectively educate the child. Our vision of a well-educated child is a child who has a heart for learning, a child who has the tools he needs to continue to learn for a lifetime and the love to want to do it."

~ Edith Stein

"A blessed thing it is for any man or woman to have a friend, one human soul whom we can trust utterly, who knows the best and worst of us, and who loves us in spite of all our faults."

~ Charles Kingsley

"Knowing the past about a person doesn't make us prophetic, but calling them into their future does! The question has never been, "Can we read the history of a man?" The question has always been, "Can we restore the future of a man?" Anyone can read the history of the man, but the Heart of the Father is to release the unfulfilled destiny of His broken children."

~ Denny Steyne
Mountain of Worship

"Out of defeat can come the best in human nature. As Christians face storms of adversity, they may rise with more beauty. They are like trees that grow on mountain ridges -- battered by winds, yet trees in which we find the strongest wood."

~ Billy Graham
