Washington Times Op-ed—Choice Sought in Driver Training Although homeschoolers have won their freedom to teach their children at home in every state, one issue continues to be a problem. It’s whether parents should be allowed to teach their children how to drive. Read more >> 2. Wisconsin: Social Worker Gets Involved after Emergency Room Visit A homeschooling family’s visit to the emergency room turned into a social services investigation about their beliefs concerning vaccinations. Struggling Learners: Diet Helps Your Student Focus Many parents have found that by reducing sugar and carbohydrates in their child’s diet, especially for breakfast, their child (whether diagnosed as ADD or not) can focus on his work so much better during the school day. Eliminate foods including cereals, sugary soft drinks, pastries, graham crackers, pancakes, waffles, and fruit roll ups. Poetry Contest Now Accepting Entries HSLDA’s 2009 student poetry contest is accepting entries through June 1. There are three categories divided by age, each with its own theme. Entries must follow a specific form. As in the past, winners will be awarded cash prizes and will have their poems published on HSLDA’s website. For contest guidelines and entry form >> 6. Announcing the Winners of the Homeschool Academic Prize Drawing Over 11,000 students participated in the 2008 Homeschool Academic Study. There were prizes available for participating which have now been awarded. First Prize: iPod—Olivia L., CO. Second Prize: Two years of HSLDA membership—Caleb U., AZ. Third Prize: $50 Visa gift card—Gabriella S., NC. Congratulations to our winners and thank-you to everyone who participated in the study. The results are scheduled to be published before the start of the traditional school year. 7.
