Educators are admitting that parental involvement is the key to a child’s educational success, even in a public school setting. Even President Obama in his recent mass broadcast to public school students in America sounded more like a parent than he did the president of the United States, as he encouraged each student to be conscientious in their attendance at school, their studies and their personal life. 2. Call Now to Help Change Senate Health Care Bill
The Senate Finance Committee will start marking up its version of the health care bill today. Urgent calls are needed to committee members asking that the creation of home visitation programs, in Subtitle I, be taken out of the bill. Read more >>
3. Sweden—the Next Germany for Homeschoolers?
After battling authorities over the right to homeschool their 7-year-old son, a Swedish couple had their boy taken away by police just as they were about to leave the country.

4. Oklahoma: Housing Authority Denies Homeschooling
When housing authorities objected to a member family homeschooling in an apartment, Home School Legal Defense Association pointed out the family was merely exercising their rights under the state constitution. Read more >>
5. Indiana: District Demands Illegal Forms
HSLDA contacted a Warrick County public school official after learning the district had mailed packets to homeschoolers making unlawful demands regarding “registration” and curriculum planning. Read more >>
6. Mississippi: Change in Certificate of Enrollment Form
HSLDA has contacted the state Office of Compulsory School Attendance Enforcement, pointing out that the new certificate of enrollment form deviates from state law and that it should be revised. Read more >>
7. Student Essay Contest Coming Soon
HSLDA’s 2009 student essay contest will begin accepting entries October 1. The contest is divided into three age groups, each with a corresponding theme. As always, cash prizes will be awarded and winning essays will be posted on our website. For contest guidelines and entry form >>
8. Bible Literacy Contest Welcomes More Homeschoolers
Homeschooled students are invited to follow up their success this year by entering the 2010 Children’s International Arts Festival sponsored by www.KidsTalkAboutGod.org. Even though the Bible literacy contest is open to all children ages 5–12, six of the eight winners in 2009 came from homeschool families. Writing and drawing entries are already being accepted for the seven dude-ranch vacation prizes that will be awarded next year. For more information and contest guidelines >>
