The Living Arts & Science Center's October Classes

The Living Arts & Science Center's October Classes Robots II, digital art, painting, sculpture, drawing, portraiture, cartooning, candy making, ceramics, weaving and so much more, all offered by professional artists and arts educators. October Classes All materials provided: Unless noted. (NM): Non-member All grades refer to current grades. Tuesdays: October 6, 13, 20, and 27 10. Beginning Printmakers Cynthia Ryan Kelly Learn all about printmaking! Using a variety of interesting and unusual materials, little ones will get the opportunity to make colorful prints. We will use the prints for cards, stationary, and for beautiful works of art to display. Ages : 4 - 6 yrs | 9:30 - 10:30 am | $40/50 (nm ) 11. Drawing the Figure Expressively Erica Meuser Graphite on paper...an engaging and yet freeing way to explore line, shape, and contour while drawing the human figure. Class fee also covers the model's fee. Ages : Adult | 6 - 9 pm | $90/100 (nm ) 12. Painting From Life Evan Fugazzi Explore the rewards and challenges of oil painting from direct observation of life. We will learn the fundamentals of both underpainting and direct oil painting from life using a small still life. Discussion will include application of these principles as they relate to figure, still life, and landscape work. Upon registration you will be provided with a list of recommended materials. Ages : Adult | 6 - 9 pm | $85/95 (nm ) 13. Women Artists and You! Kate Davis-Rosenbaum Together we will 'meet' some amazing women; surveying female visual artists of past, present, near, far, and from all different styles, and life-stories. We will focus on a woman artist who either resembles or intrigues us. Brief lecture-presentations, art-making project(s), and informal discussion will be our format. NO prior art or art history experience is expected or needed. This class is guaranteed to nourish our senses of heritage as women. Ages : Adult | 6:30 - 8 pm | $45/55 (nm ) Wednesdays: October 7, 14, 21, and 28 14. Under the Harvest Moon Melinda Boyer Day and night, orange and black, fields of pumpkins and a kaleidoscope of colored leaves will be our inspiration for autumn art. Young artists will work with clay, paint, pastels and luminescent materials to discover the magic under the harvest moon. Ages : 3 - 5 yrs | 10 - 11 am | $40/50 (nm ) Thursdays: October 1, 8, 15, 22, and 29 15. Rigid Heddle Weaving Beth Rosdatter The rigid heddle loom is a basic loom that allows you to weave light work, such as placemats, dishtowels, scarves or shawls. We'll plan our own design, learn how to 'warp' the loom, and weave our projects. The skills and techniques you learn using a rigid heddle loom are all transferable to other types of looms. There may be an extra cost of $15 to $25 for your yarn, depending upon your selected project. Ages : 10 yrs - Adult | 7:30 - 9 pm | $80/90 (nm ) Thursdays: October 8, 15, 22, and 29 16. Bilingual Boogie Beats Amy Olson Children and their parents or caregivers will use their imagination, dance, and play rhythmic instruments while singing songs in both English and Spanish. Please feel free to bring a yoga mat or small rug to sit on. Ages : 0 - 4 yrs | 6:30 - 7:15 pm | $30/40 (nm ) Saturdays: October 3, 10, 17, and 24 17. Mummy Making Madness Julie Blackburn Learn about the mummification process of the ancient Egyptians while creating a clay sarcophagus and other treasures to fill your "Pharaoh's" burial chamber. We'll mummify a HOT DOG and 'put it to rest' in an imaginative Egyptian tomb. Grades : 3rd - 5th | 10 am - noon | $70/80 (nm ) 18. Collograph Printing Erica Meuser Experiment with texture, shape and color. In this class we will collage, paint, and add materials to build raised surface plates for printmaking. Ages : Adult | 10 am - noon | $70/80 (nm ) 19. Bang! What Was That!? Marcus Wilkerson Experience first hand the excitement and wonder of sound. We'll build our own instruments, create our own music, and get connected through the emotional magic of melody! We'll learn the math and science connection to music too! Grades : 5th - 8th | 10 am - noon | $55/65 (nm ) 20. From Clay to Pottery Melinda Boyer Express yourself with clay! Learn hand building techniques, and ways of using glazes, paint, and creative designs to turn clay into pottery. We'll work with white and red clay, as well as some hand dug Kentucky clay to create functional or seasonal pieces of art. Grades : K - 2nd | 12 - 2 pm | $75/85 (nm ) 21. Robots! II Frank Boyer A continuation of the original LASC "Robots" class! We will further our understanding of electrical circuits and functions by using additional parts and components, and more complex wiring for a robotic "upgrade". This class is open to students who have already completed the LASC's primary Robots class. Grades : 3rd - 6th | 12 - 3 pm | $110/$120 (nm ) | Limit : 10 students 22. Ink Brush Li Dongfeng Many people are amazed by Chinese brush painting. This teacher will make you feel it is not only possible, but fun and exciting. In this entry level class, students will learn brush and ink techniques to explore different subjects. Li will teach the bird and and you will not only learn about painting, but Chinese culture and philosophies as well. There will be a materials fee of approximately $40. Ages : Teens - Adult | 11 - 2 pm | $85/95 (nm ) Back to top October Workshops All materials provided: Unless noted. (NM): Non-member All grades refer to current grades. Saturdays: October 3 and 17 23. Natural History Illustration Stevie Moore Depict nature realistically. Paint with watercolors to create botanical illustrations, iridescent insects and vibrantly colored tropical fish. As time permits, we will incorporate these into larger landscapes with animals and plants in their natural environments. Bring a lunch. Ages : Teens - Adult | 10 - 2 pm | $70/80 (nm ) Tuesday & Thursday: October 6 and 8 24. Creating Digital Art Bruce Frank An overview of the process of creating art using a computer. Included is an introduction to Adobe Photoshop (retouching, color correction, special effects) and using a graphics tablet with Corel Painter (drawing and painting with a computer). Students will have hands-on experience scanning images, creating an art piece, and printing it. Ages : 15 yrs - Adult | 6 - 8 pm | $45/55 (nm ) Tuesdays & Thursdays: October 27, 29; November 3, 5 25. Watercolor Tricia Spencer Students will explore and develop their skills for making expressive paintings. Color, texture, graded washes, wet into wet, and expressive brush work will assist you in emphasizing the descriptive elements in your paintings. Composition skills, use of light and the transparent effects of watercolor are essential to understanding how to work with this very sensitive and expressive medium.
