Hopkinsville Community College Dual Enrollment
Hopkinsville Community College would like to make the area home school association families aware of opportunities for senior-level students to take college courses at HCC (dual enrollment). In some cases scholarships are available (one class per semester) to encourage students to get a jump start on their college coursework. HCC counselors/admissions advisors are available weekdays on a walk-in basis. The student affairs offices are open daily 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. with late evening service until 6:30 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays as a convenience to busy families. Our financial aid officers are also available as a valuable resource for college planning.
Often, high school students do not take advantage of college-level course offerings simply because they do not realize that HCC is an open admissions institution. It is my intention in this posting to welcome home school students to HCC and let them know that the community college has much to offer. Typically, students may be admitted to HCC the summer prior to their senior year of high school (usually age 17 at a minimum). While HCC does not have an entrance examination per se, ACT or SAT or COMPASS (placement test administered by HCC) scores are required so that HCC counselors/advisors may have the necessary tools to place students in courses where they have the most opportunity for success. Having scores from the ACT or SAT or COMPASS is most helpful in determining recommended placement in math, English and reading courses.
HCC's website can be a valuable resource to prospective students. There, you may find the application for admission, a list of programs offered, scholarship application, an updated listing of courses available, and much more. Please let me know how HCC might be of assistance to your families.

PACHEK Field Trip
For those of you who are familiar with Brian Bliese, I know that you will be looking forward to seeing his presentation again. For those of you who do not know him, it will be an exciting introduction to all of his wonderful Native American knowledge.
Brian is a homeschool graduate who has been entertaining and informing school age children in our community with all of his amazing Native American artifacts, skills, and knowledge for the past several years. In past presentations he has demonstrated how to make an arrow head out of flint rock and how to start a fire out of raw materials. He can explain with great detail how to tan a hide, how to attach an arrowhead to a spear, and how to make a bow.
Brian is a taxidermist by trade, so he has a large display of animals that he has killed and preserved. His knowledge in the primitive way of life is very extensive.
Brian has agreed to put on his presentation at his home at 5010 Prosperity Lane on Friday October 21st. It will begin at 10:00 a.m. We are welcome to bring a lunch to eat when he is finished. You may want to bring a blanket, or some chairs.
If you have any questions, you may contact me (Kristen) at 424-8396 or 305-4828. I hope to see you there

Social Studies Fair in Paducah
The 2005 Social Studies Fair will be Tuesday, November 8 at 6:30pm. It will be held at New Covenant Church in Paducah.
Deadline to sign up is Monday, October 17.
Non-PATCH members will have a $3 registration fee for 1 project or $5 per family.
The theme this year is Explorers. Choose any person who has explored anything. Students are welcome to work in groups. All ages and ability levels are welcome. Below you will find a list of explorers who are already taken.
The requirements are: 1. Prepare a display board about your chosen explorer.
2. Prepare a brief oral presentation about your explorer. Only ONE MINUTE per project. Parents, please time your students and make sure they won't go over 1 minute. Any longer than that and we will be there all night! Students may do a dramatization, dress up, be in character, read a brief report, or whatever.
For those who don't like to speak in front of groups:
You do NOT have to dress up, be in character, or use your whole minute if you choose not to. You may choose to simply say, "My name is John Doe. My explorer is Ferdinand Magellan. He was the first to sail around the world." That would be just fine. We just want each student to be recognized for their work.
3. NO LATER THAN November 1, please submit to me a year for your explorer and two facts relevant to your explorer that can be found ON YOUR DISPLAY BOARD. These facts will be used in a kind of explorers game that night so the facts you submit must be found on your board.
Refreshments will be provided.
If you have questions or would like to sign up to participate just e-mail me.
Thanks, Eve Silverstein mailto:silverdl@yahoo.com
