Hi, I'm pleased to be contributing for the state of KY. I love homeschooling and am looking forward to keeping homeschoolers connected with all of the opportunities in our area. Please feel free to ask questions or contribute your group's events so that others can see what's available for homeschoolers in KY.
My husband, Tony, and I have been married for 15 years now and are homeschooling our three boys – Joe (13), Jake (9) and Jon (4). I actually quit teaching public school when God drew my heart towards home. Our oldest was 2 years old when my husband and I felt God leading me to be a stay-at-home mom. Once he reached school age, God continued changing us and led us to homeschooling and we've been homeschooling ever since. Wouldn't change it for the world!
I am very active with our local homeschool support group – Pennyroyal Area Christian Home Educators of Kentucky. We love getting together for meetings, field trips and activities.
Last year I also took on another role as the Director of a local homeschool co-op, The Learning Zone, with another homeschool mom. We meet once a week for half a day and have teachers for Art History, Spanish and P.E. The kids enjoy the classes and look forward to seeing each other weekly, the moms enjoy that time to get some other things done and we're seeing some relationships develop between families that we hope will help to support each other while homeschooling. We're still learning as we go, but we would be happy to share how we set up our co-op and answer any questions that you might have.
I have tried quite a few different curriculums and teaching methods over the years. Overall one of my college education professor's comments has truly guided me through homeschooling. "Teach the child and not the curriculum." So no matter what curriculum I use, I have a relaxed approach for my boys. I've done unit studies, Abeka, Moving with Math and Solomon Science in the past, but this year I'm trying some new things – Sonlight World History, The Mystery of History, A Reason for Handwriting and Spelling, First Language Lessons for the Well Trained Mind, Notebooking and Journaling for my middle schooler and Saxon Math. We are really enjoying this year, but of course, I'm always open to trying something new if it catches my eye!
The biggest part of what we are learning together as a family is Country Living 101. We have recently bought a farm and feel like it's Green Acres out here! We have SO much to learn, but God has put people in our lives to help us along the way. Even though it's a lot of work, this land is like a little piece of heaven for our boys to explore. They've turned into quite the outdoorsmen! We have 3 dogs, 1 cat and a horse, but there are always other animals as well. Our project now is pastured poultry so we're raising 35 baby chicks. We hope to earn some money from our land and teach the boys about entrepreneurship.
Most of all we hope the boys are learning how God provides, how He has a purpose and a plan for each of us and how to have a close relationship with Him. I guess underneath it all, homeschooling really is about discipleship and we're just blessed to have quantity time and quality time with our children.
Blessings,
