Harvest!

Posted in Garden
My little garden girl is HAPPY!

I am letting her dig up her carrots.

"It's harvest day! It's harvest day!"

Here are more pics from our very humble garden!

Sunflower Study

Big son's sunflower seeds are 6 days old and sprouting nicely.
These have been growing for a while longer.
This is a young sunflower, that we have drawn in our journals.
This one was beautiful, when it was younger:
Sunny Nature Sun King

What is usually called the flower is actually a head of numerous flowers (florets) crowded together.
Dissection!
After they dry out...
more seeds for eating and planting.
The Handbook of Nature Study provides us with some great information on our study of sunflowers.

History and Charlotte Mason

Posted in Charlotte Mason
“Charlotte Mason's students were taught history in chronological order,”
We have been enjoying 'The Story of the World, Volume 1. Ancient Times.'
We are doing a chapter a day, five days a week.
It will take eight weeks to finish.
We will then continue with 'The Story of the World, volume 2, Middle Ages'
and continue on with volume 3 and 4 in chronological order.

Illustrations by the Children
"History provides great material for narrating, and children enjoy narrating what they've read or heard. They also love to draw pictures."

Charlotte Mason encouraged the use of whole books
 not portions of books.
I get supplemental books from the library.
If I keep them around the kids will read them.

We do all of our lessons together, (11 yr, 9 yr, & 5 yr old)
even the little guy can narrate a bit and illustrate!
It's more fun when you have each other, to share and discuss what you're learning.

Weekend Movie

Posted in Family Movies
I heard Jenn mention this show a while back.
Anyone familiar with Animal Planet already knows about it.
(I'm late for everything!)
Meerkat Manor is great entertainment.
It's sort of a reality/soap opera show of a Meerkat family.
I borrowed  season 1/disc one from my library.
The complete set shown here is a 13-episode DVD set.
My kids recognized the narrator's voice and name right away...
Sean Astin...you know...Samwise...Lord of the Rings!

Nature Study

Nature Study is one component of a Charlotte Mason education.

It consists of doing a walk or exploring any type of nature,

and it consists of documenting; such as a nature journal or notebook.

It can be as simple or as complex as you like.

It can be 'spur of the moment,  whatever you find' or

Planned ahead and scheduled.

It can be far from home, a field trip, close to home, or your backyard.

The main thing is that it is enjoyed and that the children learn to observe and become curious of their surroundings.

One way to get started is here:

Barb at The Heart of Harmony posts a weekly Green Hour Challenge.

Here in Florida it is easy to be outdoors a great deal of the time.

Not only do I spend quite a bit of time outside with the kids, but they also spend several hours outdoors without me, while I work or spend some time on the computer.

If you aren't so fortunate with good weather, you can still challenge yourself with these simple and fun assignments.

Green Hour Challenge # 11  Seasonal Tree Study

Our Magnolia tree...doesn't look like much now,

but just wait until it starts to blossom!

I have more green hour challenges posted over at SunnyShootsNature
